DEFINATION
• Resin is a solid or highly viscous organic
substanceexuded by various trees or can be
producedsynthetically .
• Synonym – Rosin
• Resins are secondary metabolites produced
byhigher plants and are nothing but
oxidativeproducts of terpenes
METHOD OF EXTRACTION
1. Extraction by using solvent
2. Extraction by Distillation
3. Extraction by Making incision
4. Extraction by Heating the plant part Containing resin
5. Extraction of resin From Encrustation
PROPERTIES
• Physically :– Resins are usually hard,
transparent ortranslucent . When heated, they
softenand finally melt.
• Chemically :- They are complex mixtures of
resinacids , resin alcohols, resin
phenols(resinotannols).
• Solubility :- Insoluble in water &petroleum
spirit .Soluble in alcohol, chloroform & ether
CLASSIFICATION
• Based on the occurrence ,it is classified into five types-
1. Oleo resin
2. Gum resin
3. Oleo-Gum resin
4. Glycoresin
5. Balsam
Based on Chemical Constituent,It is classified as
1. Resin acid/Resinolic Acid
2. Resin Alcohol/Resin Ester
3. Resenes/Inert Resin
USES OF RESIN
1. They are used in the preparation of emulsion
2. Solid resines are available as adhesive.
3. They are used externally as mild antiseptic agents in
the form of ointment and plaster
4. Resinous drugs posses the action of anthelmintic ,
counter –irritant,exceptorant,laxative and sedative
5. It Decrease the heat on the flower, thereby
protecting them
