The document discusses researchers' use and perceptions of digital technologies and web 2.0 tools. It finds that while some researchers make occasional use of these tools, frequent or intensive use is still rare. Researchers are described as risk-averse and slow to adopt new technologies. Younger researchers also tend to follow traditional publishing practices rather than experimenting with new forms of dissemination. Maintaining personal networks and interpersonal connections are highly valued among researchers over online interactions. There is a tension between the collaborative nature of many digital tools and researchers' training to carefully validate ideas before publication.

This workshop is divided in 2 parts. In the first part, I will discuss how/why academics use social media and online networks for scholarship, and explore the opportunities and tensions that exist in these spaces. In the second part of the workshop, I will facilitate small group and large group conversations on this topic based on participant interests. Potential topics of exploration may include but are not limited to: social media participation strategies; self-disclosures on social media; capturing and analyzing social media data; ethics of social media research; social media use for networked learning.

Slides from an invited talk given to the The 4th International Conference on E-learning and Distance Education located in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: Online journals, online forums, and social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are an integral part of open and digital scholarship, which is often seen as a major breakthrough in radically rethinking the ways in which knowledge is created and shared. In this presentation I situate networked practices in open/digital scholarship and explain what scholars and professors do online, and, why they do the things that the do. I conclude by describing 3 themes pervasive in scholarly networks: identify networks, networks of conflict, and networks of disclosure.

Demonstrating knowledge mobilization and accountability are increasingly prominent features of the scholarly landscape; scholar-practitioners need to understand and strategically manage available indicators of impact. At the same time, traditional scholarly metrics and indexing are converging with social media, resulting in new approaches for measuring scholar-practitioner influence. The emerging scene challenges libraries to support scholars, practitioners and students to engage with an evolving environment in which much may be gained or forfeited depending on how reputation is curated. For librarians to assist scholars in this new altmetrics environment, more needs to be known about how students and faculty are or are not engaging with emerging tools available to them. This presentation gives an overview of the considerations, perceptions, and issues related to the use of altmetrics by graduate students and scholar-practitioners at VIU and Royal Roads University.

It has been updated to be presented at my home institution (Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía - CSIC) in a scientific seminar (14 June 2013). I have included some new slides and revised others. I present a personal revision (sometimes my own vision) of some issues that I consider key for doing Science. It was focused on the expected audience, mainly Scientific Officers with background in different fields of science and scholarship, but also Agency staff. Abstract: In a recent Special issue of Nature concerning Science Metrics it was claimed that " Research reverts to a kind of 'academic prostitution' in which work is done to please editors and referees rather than to further knowledge."If this is true, funding agencies should try to avoid falling into the trap of their own system. By perpetuating this 'prostitution' they risk not funding the best research but funding the best sold research. Given the current epoch of economical crisis, where in a quest for funds researchers are forced into competitive game of pandering to panelists, its seems a good time for deep reflection about the entire scientific system. With this talk I aim to provoke extra critical thinking among the committees who select evaluators, and among the evaluators, who in turn require critical thinking to the candidates when selecting excellent science. I will present some initiatives (e.g. new tracers of impact for the Web era- 'altmetrics'), and on-going projects (e.g. how to move from publishing advertising to publishing knowledge), that might enable us to favor Science over marketing.

Research Evaluation in an Open Science context

The Knowledge Exchange has published the report ‘𝙊𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙛𝙞𝙡𝙚: 𝙈𝙤𝙙𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝 𝙚𝙫𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙣 𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥’. The report presents how the Openness Profile can help address existing gaps in the assessment of Open Science in relation to issues such as: • The need to accelerate the transition to Open - operationalising and normalising open scholarship practices has proven challenging. • Conflicting ambitions combined with strong network effects that punish those who deviate from sector norms around research assessment and practice. • The economic nature of challenges, either financial or relating to actors’ incentives, associated with the transition to open scholarship. • Distortion of researcher behaviour due to over-reliance on traditional metrics. • Underfunded and underdeveloped funder grant information systems. Poor adoption of PIDs and little to no interoperability with downstream stakeholders. • Key contributors to the academic knowledge ecosystem being under-recognised • Research being organised with ‘well defined’ rules that do not include ‘open’-related criteria. The potential to improve open research evaluation practice as well as the requirements to implement the Openness Profile are addressed, including recommendations for stakeholders.

E-Learn 2014 Abstract: Today digital footprints are left all over the Internet for others to find. This article reviews the means through which scholars can organize research and connect digital scholarship for increased visibility and impact. A survey of the literature on scholarship tools to provide connections for publishing records, academic citations, and digital identity management was done. The authors reviewed Researcher ID, ORCID, and Google Scholar Citations. The numbers of portals for synthesizing research output and related identity management platforms are increasing; however, understanding what this research impact might look like in the digital age can provide questions for assessment for understanding these traces of scholarship online.

Students and staff have been developing their own digital literacies for years and successfully integrating them into their social and professional activities. The Visitors and Residents project has been capturing these literacies by interviewing participants within four educational stages from secondary school to experienced scholars. Using the Visitors and Residents idea as a framework the project has been mapping what motivates individuals and groups to engage with the web for learning. We have been exploring the information-seeking and learning strategies that are evolving in both personal and professional contexts. In this presentation we will discuss these emerging ‘user owned’ literacies and how they might integrate with institutional approaches to developing digital literacies. We also will discuss the Visitors and Residents mapping process and how this could be utilised by projects as a tool for reflecting on existing and potential literacies and the development of services and systems. DQ3-2 Responses 1. The internet is filled with many sites and many options, and to think that each everyone is credible would just be foolish. The importance of considering one’s sources and making sure their reliable is one in which we as graduate students need to take to heart. As a graduate student one needs to look into the research they find and make sure that it comes from an authoritative site, has additional sources that back up their data, and lastly that there isn’t bias in the research that’s being done (Driscoll & Brizee). If these things aren’t done correctly, then one’s work will be open to scrutiny, and one's own additional research will be flawed, going to show that taking the extra time to look into one’s own sources is critical when it comes down to doing proper research. With this in mind as graduate students and aspiring innovators in our fields, it’s our due diligence to look into and evaluate every one of our sources to make sure they’re reliable and unbiased. Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction. This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg, The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation. This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability. Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots. The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee. • The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act. • The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students.
