This document is a research report submitted for a post-graduate diploma in TEFL that compares traditional grammar and functional grammar. It finds that traditional grammar has several limitations, such as being prescriptive rather than descriptive, using categories based on European languages that do not apply to all languages, and lacking a theoretical framework. Functional grammar emerged to address these limitations by taking a more descriptive approach focused on the functions of language in communication rather than rigid rules. The report provides a detailed analysis of the concepts and approaches of traditional grammar versus functional grammar.
