This document presents a research proposal on solid waste management in Shanghai, China. It discusses integrated solid waste management practices in Japan as a model. The objectives are to change Shanghai's role from service provider to service regulator by transferring responsibility for collection, treatment, and disposal services to social organizations. Several methods for solid waste disposal are described, including landfills, incineration, biological processing, recycling, ocean dumping, and plasma gasification. Advantages and disadvantages of each method are provided.

RATIONALE: ZERO WASTE MANAGEMENT PROJECT
One of the more serious problems that our country and our university in particular encounter nowadays is pollution which is due to improper handling and disposal of solid wastes. This problem occurs not only in urban areas where population density is high and human activities are continuous and intense but is also felt in the regional and rural areas.
In Metro Manila, the population density is 14,440 persons per square kilometer, 63 times more than the national average. Per capita waste production daily is estimated at 0.66 kg. More than half a kilo of trash per person per day is a lot. The volume of daily wastes weights in a little over 6,000 tons. Only 85% of these wastes are collected. Uncollected wastes pile up and fester in street corners and marketplaces, vacant lots and other open (often unauthorized) dumpsites. Ubiquitous scavengers light into these waste piles to pick whatever they can salvage from the junk. These waste materials are the breeding ground of flies, mosquitoes, rats, and other manner of pests and disease-carrying organisms.
An irreducible amount of waste also finds its way into bodies of water, into ditches, storm drains, and sewer mains. This does not only contaminate and pollute our waters; come the rainy season, garbage plugs up the city’ sewerage and flood waters rise-causing untold damages to life and property. Common sense tells us that the most cost-effective way of managing waste is to do something at the source generation, that is, at home, at the office or at the institutional level.

It is the most traditional method of waste
disposal.
Waste is directly dumped into disused quarries,
mining voids or borrow pits.
Disposed waste is compacted and covered with
soil to prevent vermin and wind-blown litter.

disposal option for the local
council.
• Jobs will be created for local
people.
• Lots of different types of waste
can be disposed of by landfill
in comparison to other waste
disposal methods.
• The gases given off by the
landfill site could be collected
and used for generating power.
Disadvantages:
• Dangerous gases are given off
from landfill sites that cause
local air pollution and
contribute to global warming.
• Local streams could become
polluted with toxins seeping
through the ground from the
landfill site.
• Once the site has been filled it
might not be able to be used
for redevelopment as it might
be too polluted.

19. OCEAN DUMPING
Ocean dumping is the dumping or placing of
materials in the ocean, often on the continental
shelf.
A wide range of materials is involved, including
garbage, construction and demolition debris,
sewage sludge, dredge material, waste
chemicals, and nuclear waste.
Sometime hazardous and nuclear waste are also
disposed but these are highly dangerous for
aquatic life and human life also.

• Convenient
• Inexpensive
• Source of nutrients for fishes and
marine mammals.
• Vast amount of space is available.
• All type of wastes are disposed
Disadvantages:
• There are three main direct public
health risks from ocean dumping:
(1) occupational accidents,
injuries, and exposures
(2) exposure of the public to
hazardous or toxic materials
washed up on beach sand.
(3) human consumption of marine
organisms that have been
contaminated by ocean
disposal
• Highly dangerous for aquatic life.
21. BIOLOGICAL PROCESSING
Materials such as plants, food scraps, and paper
products can be decomposed into the organic
matter.
The organic matter that is produced from this type
of recycling can then be used for such things as
landscaping purpose or agricultural uses.
Usually this method of recycling is done by putting
the materials in a container and let to stay there
until it decomposes.

23. RECYCLING PROCESS
• COLLECTION: The first step required for
recycling is collecting recyclable materials from
communities. Today many major cities and larger
communities offer a curbside pick up service for
recyclable materials.
• SORTING: The second step involves processing
the recyclable materials. This includes sorting
the materials into groups, cleaning them and
getting them ready to be sold to manufacturers
who will turn the materials into new products.
