RESEARCH AND PLANNING INVESTIGATION

What is research?
Research is the process in which the studying of materials and sources are
undertaken in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions. In the media
industry, producers will begin their process of creating a new product by
undertaking research (e.g. Look at competitors) to identify the common
conventions in order to aid them in the planning of their own media product.

What is planning?
Planning is the organization of elements of a media product. E.g. Planning how
to advertise the product. Planning is an essential factor in producing a new
media product, without planning how you are going to advertise or target a
specific audience, the product will not be successful.
Research in horror films...
Research would need to be undertaken in order develop a better understanding of
how horror films are created specifically to target an audience and also in
identifying common conventions that are used such a scary location. This could be
done by analysing horror films that are currently out or past films that were
popular with its target audience.

Planning...
The beginning point would be the creation of the film’s narrative, whether it be a
simple linear narrative that has a clear start, middle and end or in contrast have a
circular narrative which is used in films that aim to develop the narrative onto
numerous sequels. In relation to this, the different components including
representation and sound will also be carefully planned in order to fit within the
horror genre.
A common convention in horror films is the tense and spooky atmosphere created
by the different elements, therefore producers will need to aim to include such
conventions in order to make their genre of horror recognisable to their audiences.

The trailer is the most important element in selling a film as it gives audiences the
experience of watching the film and therefore will be planned carefully by the
producers to achieve this aim and make audiences enjoy the sneak peak.
