This task was designed to help guide discussions during the second meeting of partners on the C-SAP (Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for Sociology, Anthropology and Politics) Open Educational Resources [OER] Phase II project: Cascading Social Science Open Educational Resources. Through the use of reflexive tasks, the project team aims to develop a collaborative framework for cascading OERs within social sciences.

Drawing on our experience of supporting a nationwide Open Educational Resources programme (the UKOER programme), this presentation will consider the diverse range of approaches to describing OERs that have emerged across the programme and their impact on resource sharing, workflows, and an aggregate view of the resources.
Due to the diverse nature of the projects in the programme, ranging from individual educators to discipline-based consortia and institutions, it was apparent that no one technical or descriptive solution would fit all. Consequently projects were mandated to supply only a limited amount of descriptive information (programme tag, author, title, date, url, file format, file size, rights) with some additional information suggested (language, subject classifications, keywords, tags, comments, description). Projects were free to choose how this information should be encoded (if at all), stored, and shared.
In response, the projects have taken many different approaches to the description and management of resources. These range from using traditional highly structured and detailed metadata standards to approaches using whatever descriptions are supported by particular web2.0 applications. This experimental approach to resource description offers the wider OER community an opportunity to examine and assess the implications of different strategies for resource description and management
This paper illustrates a number of examples of projects’ approaches to description, noting the workflows and effort involved. We will consider the relationship of the choice of tool (repository, web2.0 application, VLE) to the choice of standards; and the relationship between local requirements and those of the wider community.
We will consider the impact of those choices on the dissemination and discoverability of resources. For example, the implications of resource description choices for discovery services which draw on multiple sources of OERs.

Abstract: Open Access (OA) and Open Educational Resources (OER's) are terms being increasingly used in educational circles. There are a lot of free, well-designed and interesting curriculum resources out there for the discerning teacher to find and use in their classroom. This workshop will provide a tour of some of the key locations for finding such resources for k-12 teachers, as well as introducing you to the ideas behind Open Access in general, and a discussion of interesting new directions for lifelong professional development, such as the Peer-to-Peer university. The workshop will consist of introducing you to the terms and resources of Open Access as well as small group discussions on strategies and issues about using these resources in your classroom. This will be an interactive session, where your questions are welcome and will guide the kinds of materials we discuss.

This paper discusses the Learning Resource Metadata Initiative (LRMI), an international project that aims to facilitate the discovery of educational resources through the use of embedded metadata that can be used by search engines (e.g. Google, Yahoo, Bing, Yandex) to refine the search services they offer. LRMI has extended the schema.org metadata vocabulary with terms that are specifically relevant to aiding the discovery of learning resources.

Defines OER in terms of Creative Commons licences and outlines implication of this for ebooks as OERs, inlcuding OER content in ebooks, and commercial ebook content in OERs.
What Can schema.Org Offer The Web Manager?Phil Barker

Abstract: Schema.org is a major new initiative supported by Google, Yahoo, Microsoft Bing and Yandex with the aim of "making it easier for people to find the right web pages". It is a simplified profile of microdata, a means of embedding metadata in web pages that is aligned with HTML5. It differs significantly from previous attempts at providing resource descriptions for web pages to aid discovery, such as various metadata schema, microformats and RDFa in that it has support from the major search engines plus W3C, making it both standards-based and with vendor support.
This workshop will investigate relevance of schema.org to UK Further and Higher Education Institutions. For example what might it offer for the description of organisations, events, courses and resources. There will be an emphasis on what practically can be achieved now, what might be achieved in the near future, what is necessary to get there, and what are the pitfalls and misconceptions to avoid.
Presentation given to the start-up meeting for the JISC HE Academy UKOER phase 3 programme. Covers some of the technical initiatives with which CETIS suggest projects should consider engaging. They are resource aggregation, resource description with schema.org and LRMI, SWORD deposit and the Learning Registry.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
