'Been‘ : the person has
visited the place and
come back.
‘Gone‘ : The person is
in the place now.
“He’s been to New York”
(the person is in Las
Palmas now)
“He’s gone to New York”
(the person is not in Las
Palmas now. S/he is in
New York)
3. Past simple
We use the past simple when a specific time in
the past is mentioned :
“Did you see the film last night?”
or understood between the speakers
“Did you see the film?”
(We both know the film was on last night).
So, a question beginning “When...?” will normally
be in the past simple
