The university as a hackerspace - Joss Winn - Jisc Digital Festival 2014Jisc
The University of Lincoln has explored opportunities as diverse as the potential of open data, developed a research data infrastructure, nurtured student developers and developed a research-led approach to teaching known as the student as producer, to name a few. However, these projects and initiatives have not been throw away experiments. Rather, they have helped inform the University’s new Digital Education Strategy aimed at meeting the needs and improving the experience of its students and researchers at a time when the idea and purpose of the university is being challenged.
This provides an overview of some of the innovative projects and initiatives the University of Lincoln has undertaken in the past few years and how universities can explore approaches to teaching and research support, while helping inform the institutional mission and strategy. It will also provide an opportunity for managers, learning technologists and teachers to discuss the potential for such an approach at their institution and to share relevant experiences and ideas.

Keeping up to date & comparing journal apps. the stockholm workshop 2016Guus van den Brekel
Workshop 1: Comparing journal apps and Keeping up to date
Beskrivning: The aim of this workshop is an extensive update of the numerous possibilities for librarians and medical professionals to keep up to date about medical scientific publications and news. The latest developments of content aggregation and curation offer opportunities for librarians to not just keep up to date, but also to share and publish the acquired knowledge among colleagues and patrons.
After this workshop, participants will be able to keep up to date more efficiently and have a broad knowledge of a wide range of tools for advising patrons. Supporting and facilitating medical professionals in education, patient-care and research is the main focus for medical and health librarians. We constantly have to attempt to make their workflow more efficient and easier. To be able to advise patrons about efficient ways of keeping up to date, we have to know ourselves what tools are out there. Because if we do not advise them, they will (have to) find out themselves, with a risk of missing out on relevant resources or possibilities. No one tool fits all. It is all about knowing in detail what a patron wants and match it with tools that can facilitate that requirement most efficiently. And the options for them to choose from are almost limitless either for free or via commercial parties.
In this workshop we will go more into more detail on these possibilities. I will cover the scope of common practices and possibilities as completely as possible, showcased by various licensed and free web tools. Email alerts, Saved search, RSS and Readers, Table of Contents, Apps by Publishers and content providers will be discussed, but Journal Apps plus Web Media content aggregation and curation will take the main part of this course.

European Perspectives on Learning Analytics: LAK15 LACE panelLACE Project
Panel presentation at Learning Analytics and Knowledge 2015 (LAK15) in Poughkeepsie, NY, USA by a team of speakers from the LACE project.
Since the emergence of learning analytics in North America, researchers and practitioners have worked to develop an international community. The organization of events such as SoLAR Flares and LASI Locals, as well as the move of LAK in 2013 from North America to Europe, has supported this aim. There are now thriving learning analytics groups in North American, Europe and Australia, with smaller pockets of activity emerging on other continents. Nevertheless, much of the work carried out outside these forums, or published in languages other than English, is still inaccessible to most people in the community. This panel, organized by Europe’s Learning Analytics Community Exchange (LACE) project, brings together researchers from five European countries to examine the field from European perspectives. In doing so, it will identify the benefits and challenges associated with sharing and developing practice across national boundaries.

Make the difference: ICDE Featured session at the Annual Online Learning Cons...icdeslides
While education is more popular than ever, huge gaps have to be tackled to achieve quality education for all, Trends and cases in different parts of the world will be highlighted. What is the impact of Open Education Resources, OER, and ODE? And how ICDE can contribute to a future oriented, collaborative platform for global educational achievements? MOOCs is discussed as a possible enabler for a new pedagogy.
Education and learning is probably that single phenomenon that has the greatest impact on humans and societies, in particular in a long-term perspective (OECD 2014).
Grand challenge number one is to breach the trend preventing developing countries, in particular South of Sahara, taking part in the global knowledge revolution. Everyone aspiring for higher education should have the right to affordable access. This is grand challenge number two. And it cannot be met without open education and technology enhanced learning.
Three messages:
• Senior management in education needs to innovate from within to open up education.
• Governments must take firm decision on holistic policies for open and distance education.
• Stakeholders should team up meeting the two grand challenges through open education and technology enhanced learning.
Increasing OER Adoptions with the Community College Consortium for OERUna Daly
During the past few years, adoptions of open textbooks at community colleges have increased. A key component in many community college adoption campaigns has been participating in communities of practice. Members of the Community College Consortium for OER (CCCOER) will share their successful strategies and tactics for creating a community of practice nationally as well as locally.
Etienne Wenger defines communities of practice as “groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.” With over 200 member colleges in 17 states and provinces, CCCOER encourages collaboration between members and invites OER project presentations at their monthly online advisory meetings. Experienced members advise those who are just getting started on OER and best practices are freely shared. Access to a community of college OER experts through the CCCOER listserve makes it easier for new members to find and adopt the highest quality OER available in their disciplines.
Monthly webinars featuring OER leaders at community colleges, universities, and educational organizations around the world keep the community informed of new research findings, OER projects, and open policies. Meetups at regional and national conferences provide an opportunity to share and promote the OER adoption successes of our members with colleagues throughout higher education.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
