Relays
Relays
A relay is an electrically operated switch. Many relays
use an electromagnet to mechanically operate a
switch, but other operating principles are also used,
such as solid-state relays. Relays are used where it is
necessary to control a circuit by a low-power signal.
There are many different types of valves that are found in
different industries and applications are as Below:
Differetial relays Differential protection relays
Power relays Electromechanical relays
Time delay relays PCB power relays
Digital relays
Safety relays
Monitoring relays
D i f f e r e n t i a l r e l a y s
Differential relays are types of relays used to
check the difference in terms of input and
output currents for a given power system in
terms of the phase angle or magnitude of the
current measured. Differential relays can take a
number of forms depending on the type of
equipment that they are protecting.
Power relays
Power relays are electrically operated
switches that use electromagnetic coils to
aid in closing or opening a current circuit.
Power relays are made up of amateurs,
springs and one or more contacts. Power
relays designed to open when electric
current is applied have an electromagnet
that attracts the amateur pulling the
amateur in the coil's direction until it
reaches the contact hence closing the
circuit.

Time delay relays are special- purpose relays also
referred to as logic components that have some
characteristics of both timers and relays integrated to
regulate current in electrical circuits. These types of
electrical switches are arranged for an intentional
delay in operating their contacts ensuring they are
only used in specific time frames.
Time delay relays normally stay on for a specific
amount of time when activated and are switched off
when the time finally elapses. Operators have the
ability to adjust the delay time simply by turning a
knob to the required time frame.

Wikipedia the free encyclopedia defines digital
relays are types of electrical safety switches that
use binary digit mechanisms such as micro-
controllers with software based algorithms for the
detection of electrical faults. Digital relays can
also be referred to as microprocessor type
protective relays by their manufacturers.
Digital relays have analogue to digital converters
that convert the measured analogue quantities to
implement the most suitable protection algorithm.
Safety relays
These are types of electrical switches that check and
monitors a safety system allowing the machine to
start or execute commands open the circuit hence
stopping the machine when faced with potential
danger.
Single function safety relays are used in smaller
machines where a dedicated logic device is needed
to complete the safety function due to their
economical use.
Monitoring relays
Monitoring relays are electrical switches whose main
purpose is to monitor balanced or imbalanced
supplies of wire loads powered by generators,
uninterrupted power supplies, stabilizers, inverters
and electric boards.
Monitoring relays are required in electric switch-
gear technologies.
Differential protection relays
These types of electrical switches are found in
electrical power transformers rated more than
5MVA. They are able to detect faults occurring in
transformers inside the insulating oil responding to
the faults hence providing the appropriate reflex
action.
Differential protection relays are meant to prevent
the arising of differences between the input or
output currents in the transformers hence ensuring
there is no short circuiting or rise in electric voltage.
Electromechanical relays
These are electrical switching devices that complete
or interrupt an electrical circuit via opening or
closing the circuit by physically moving electrical
contacts into contact or away from each other.
These switches are electrically operated to isolate
circuits or batteries, detects faults or malfunctions
in transmission and distribution lines as well as
controlling high powered circuits using low powered
electrical circuits.
PCB power relays
Printed circuit board power relays are electrical
switching devices used for high power and low level
applications that mainly require the use of printed
circuit board assembly. They are mainly used in
applications that require relatively smaller relays
making PCB mounting practical and relatively easy.
PCB power relays normally use
either electromagnetic PCB relays or Reed relays in
their magnetic craft ranges.

Relays are used where it is necessary to control a circuit by a low-power signal. D i f f e r e n t i a l r e l a y s Differential relays are types of relays used to check the difference in terms of input and output currents for a given power system in terms of the phase angle or magnitude of the current measured. Differential relays can take a number of forms depending on the type of equipment that they are protecting.
  • 4. Power relays Power relays are electrically operated switches that use electromagnetic coils to aid in closing or opening a current circuit. Power relays are made up of amateurs, springs and one or more contacts. Power relays designed to open when electric current is applied have an electromagnet that attracts the amateur pulling the amateur in the coil's direction until it reaches the contact hence closing the circuit.

These types of electrical switches are arranged for an intentional delay in operating their contacts ensuring they are only used in specific time frames. Time delay relays normally stay on for a specific amount of time when activated and are switched off when the time finally elapses. Operators have the ability to adjust the delay time simply by turning a knob to the required time frame.

Digital relays have analogue to digital converters that convert the measured analogue quantities to implement the most suitable protection algorithm.

Safety relays These are types of electrical switches that check and monitors a safety system allowing the machine to start or execute commands open the circuit hence stopping the machine when faced with potential danger. Single function safety relays are used in smaller machines where a dedicated logic device is needed to complete the safety function due to their economical use.

Monitoring relays Monitoring relays are electrical switches whose main purpose is to monitor balanced or imbalanced supplies of wire loads powered by generators, uninterrupted power supplies, stabilizers, inverters and electric boards. Monitoring relays are required in electric switch- gear technologies.
  • 9. Differential protection relays These types of electrical switches are found in electrical power transformers rated more than 5MVA. They are able to detect faults occurring in transformers inside the insulating oil responding to the faults hence providing the appropriate reflex action. Differential protection relays are meant to prevent the arising of differences between the input or output currents in the transformers hence ensuring there is no short circuiting or rise in electric voltage.

Electromechanical relays These are electrical switching devices that complete or interrupt an electrical circuit via opening or closing the circuit by physically moving electrical contacts into contact or away from each other. These switches are electrically operated to isolate circuits or batteries, detects faults or malfunctions in transmission and distribution lines as well as controlling high powered circuits using low powered electrical circuits.

PCB power relays Printed circuit board power relays are electrical switching devices used for high power and low level applications that mainly require the use of printed circuit board assembly. They are mainly used in applications that require relatively smaller relays making PCB mounting practical and relatively easy. PCB power relays normally use either electromagnetic PCB relays or Reed relays in their magnetic craft ranges.
