What is Regenerative Braking
System?
 It is an Energy recovery mechanism converts
kinetic energy of the vehicle into another form
while braking.
Principle:
1) First law of Thermodynamics.
2) Convertion of energy using electric motors:
Types of Regenerative Braking
System:
 Regenerative Braking System in Hybrid
Electrical Vehicles (HEVs)
 Regenerative Braking System in
Electrical Vehicles (EVs)
System:
1) In HEVs :
 HEVs consists of both IC Engine and an electric
motor for the movement of vehicles.
2) In Electrical Vehicles (EVs)
 EVs runs only with the help of Electric Motor.
Applications:
 Regenerative Braking System is used to recover
lost Kinetic energy of the vehicle.
 Regenerative Braking System can also be applied
for locomotives/trains.
 Indian cars like Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and Mahindra
e2o are presently using Regenerative Braking
System.
 Companies like TESLA, TOYOTA and other top
foreign brands are using Regenerative Braking
System.
Merits:
 Reduces energy wastage.
 Improves vehicle efficiency.
 Reduces Engine wear.
 Increases Vehicle Power.
 Eco - friendly system
Demerits:
 Increases vehicle weight.
 Increases cost of the vehicle.
Statistics on Regenerative
Braking System
 Bar chart showing percentage of energy saved by
using RBS till 2018.
Conclusion:
 The regenerative braking system used in the
vehicles satisfies the purpose of saving a part
of the energy lost during braking.
 The results from some of the test conducted
show that around 30% of the energy delivered
can be recovered by the system.
 Hence regenerative braking system proves
itself as an effective and futuristic method to
save energy in the upcoming era of Electric
Cars.
