A record label markets and promotes music recordings and videos. It handles production, distribution, artist promotion, finding new artists, finances, and more. Major labels have their own distribution systems and command high annual sales, while independent labels have less financial backing. Atlantic Records is a major label founded in 1947 that specializes in R&B, jazz, and soul but expanded into rock and pop. It manages popular artists like Wiz Khalifa, Sean Paul, and Bruno Mars. Copyright gives creators control over use and distribution of their work, so the document discusses contacting original artists for permission to use songs in a music video.
Music Licensing: From Creation to CollectionJonathan Lane
How does one license their music? There are seemingly endless options these days! You can sign with a music provider like a music library, publishing company or record label. You might have an agent who pitches your music to TV, film or marketers on your behalf. You might even be savvy enough to shop your music on your own. This industry pressures artists to feel the need to be “represented”; that it’s necessary. Regardless, the prevailing trend in artists’ approach to earning compensation and exposure for their work is that of a DIY mindset.
In this panel, we will explore the fundamental steps of the complete music licensing process. We will examine the differing approaches to licensing music and lead you on a detailed journey, from when and why the music is created to how it’s placed in a TV show, film or commercial. We’ll discuss different pitching methodologies and how to foster and maintain relationships with industry professionals. This panel serves to examine the whole licensing process through the lenses of the music creators, purveyors and the industry’s top professionals.

2. A record label is a company that is a brand or a trademark
and is associated with the marketing of music recordings
and music videos.
They have many roles that come along with it as it is they
do many other things as well as marketing the artists and
songs such as:
- Production and distribution of the songs
- Market and promote both the artist and the song
- Find new artists
- Maintain the company and contract
- Maintain finance and many more.
3. A major record label is a label that commands high
percentage of the annual sales of the record within the
company and they have their own distribution system.
An independent company is a record label that operates
without funding of an outside major record label.
Major record label have more financial backing as they are
a much wider company and also have their own stream of
companies therefor can promote and produce with higher
quality and more efficiently. Independent labels do not
have as much financial backing an as they have less
financial support they tend to work with other companies
that would then promote and produce the music.
4. I believe my artists would be suited to the
record Label, Atlantic records.
Atlantic records is a record label that was
found by Ahmet Ertegun in 1947 and they
specialize in R and B, Jazz and soul
music.
5. In 1967 Atlantic records became a wholly owned subsidiary of
Warner brothers seven arts which is now known as the Warner
Music group who expanded into rock and pop music along side R
and B and jazz.
In 2004 Electra records also merged with Atlantic records and are
now known as the sister label.
Atlantic records it definitely a major company as it has many other
companies merged with them. The genre that Atlantic records focus
o is R and B and pop, HipHop music. The record label became a hit
in 1949 only two years after it was founded and till now is one of the
top Record labels in the music industry.
Atlantic records manage many top and famous artists such as, Wiz
Khalifa, Sean Paul, Bruno Mars, K Michelle, Trey Songz, Ed
Sheeran, Snoop god, Jay Z and many more.
6. Copy right means, ‘The exclusive and assignable legal right,
given to the ordinator for a fixed number of years, to print,
publish, perform, film or record literary artistic, or musical
material.’
In simpler words, it is a legal concept which allows the creator
of a product or piece of work to have rights its use and
distribution. I will definitely make sure my artists has a
copyright contract in order to make sure no one can steal or
use her music without permission.
As I am using a song from an artists already I will have to
contact or end a letter to the original company and artist of the
song I am using and ask for permission on whether I can use
the song for my music video because if I use it without
permission. It will be illegal.
7. If I use the song without being granted the
permission than I can be prosecuted as I
would be using someone's elses music
without their permission or knowledge.
8. From what I have learned from my research I know that I
need a company which will help my artists promote and
produce with high quality and with a good budget therefore
I have deiced that my artists will be suited to a major
company. I believe that my artists would fit in the record
label, Atlantic Records as they are a major record label
and also focus on the R and B genre.
I have also learned that I need to consider copyright ands
email or contact the original company and artist of the
song that I will be using for my music video or there will be
serious consequences if I don’t.
