Your adversaries continue to attack and get into companies. You can no longer rely on alerts from point solutions alone to secure your network. To identify and mitigate these advanced threats, analysts must become proactive in identifying not just indicators, but attack patterns and behavior. In this workshop we will walk through a hands-on exercise with a real world attack scenario. The workshop will illustrate how advanced correlations from multiple data sources and machine learning can enhance security analysts capability to detect and quickly mitigate advanced attacks.

HTTP Parameter Pollution Vulnerabilities in Web Applications (Black Hat EU 2011)Marco Balduzzi
While input validation vulnerabilities such as XSS and SQL injection have been intensively studied, a new class of injection vulnerabilities called HTTP Parameter Pollution (HPP) has not received as much attention. HPP attacks consist of injecting encoded query string delimiters into other existing parameters. If a web application does not properly sanitize the user input, a malicious user can compromise the logic of the application to perform either client-side or server-side attacks. One consequence of HPP attacks is that the attacker can potentially override existing hard-coded HTTP parameters to modify the behavior of an application, bypass input validation checkpoints, and access and possibly exploit variables that may be out of direct reach.
In the talk we present the first automated system for the detection of HPP vulnerabilities in real web applications. Our approach consists of injecting fuzzed parameters into the web application and a set of tests and heuristics to determine if the pages that are generated contain HPP vulnerabilities. We used this system to conduct a large-scale experiment by testing more than 5,000 popular websites and discovering unknown HPP flaws in many important and well-known sites such as Microsoft, Google, VMWare, Facebook, Symantec, Paypal and others. These sites have been all informed and many of them have acknowledged or fixed the problems. We will explain in details how to efficiently detect HPP bugs and how to prevent this novel class of injection vulnerabilities in future web applications.

Protecting Financial Networks from Cyber CrimeLancope, Inc.
Financial services organizations are prime targets for cyber criminals. They must take extreme care to protect customer data, while also ensuring high levels of network availability to allow for 24/7 access to critical financial information. Additionally, industry consolidation has created large, heterogeneous network environments within large financial institutions, making it difficult to ensure that networks have the necessary visibility and protection to prevent a devastating security breach. By leveraging NetFlow from existing network infrastructure, financial services organizations can achieve comprehensive visibility across even the largest, most complex networks. The ability to quickly detect a wide range of potentially malicious activity helps prevent damaging data breaches and network disruptions. Attend this informational webinar, conducted by Lancope’s Director of Security Research, Tom Cross, to learn: How NetFlow can help quickly uncover both internal and external threats How pervasive network insight can accelerate incident response and forensic investigations How to substantially decrease enterprise risks
MITRE ATT&CKcon 2018: Sofacy 2018 and the Adversary Playbook, Robert Falcone,...MITRE - ATT&CKcon
Unit 42 researches threat activity and publishes detailed reports on attack campaigns launched by these adversaries. One of these adversaries, known as Sofacy, has been carrying out attack campaigns on high profile targets for many years and has continued into 2018.
To understand how to defend against these threats, an analyst has to read our reports, process them and mentally map them to their defenses. In most cases we expect readers just "block" all of the indicators we include in the report and assume they are covered. Last year we started using ATT&CK to codify the techniques we observed, linking those techniques to indicator patterns and encoding them into STIX 2 objects, with the goal of creating something that a defender can use to answer the question: "How am I defending against this adversary?" We call these documents, "Adversary Playbooks" as they contain our best approximation of how the adversary launches their attacks.
This talk describes the concept of Adversary Playbooks, as well as provides an overview of the attack campaigns Unit 42 has attributed to the Sofacy group in 2018. It uses the discussed attacks to show how these playbooks are constructed and explain some of the challenges of incorporating ATT&CK and STIX 2 together for this purpose.

Abstract:
Red team testing in organizations over the last year has shown a dramatic increase in detections mapped to MITRE ATT&CK™ across Windows, Linux and macOS. However, many organizations continue to miss several key techniques that, unsurprisingly, often blend in with day-to-day user operations. One example includes Trusted Developer Utilities which can be readily available on standard user endpoints, not just developer workstations, and such applications allow for code execution. Also, XSL Script processing can be used as an attack vector as there are a number of trusted utilities that can consume and execute scripts via XSL. And finally, in addition to these techniques, trusted .NET default binaries are known to allow unauthorized execution as well, these include tools like InstallUtil, Regsvcs and AddInProcess. Specific techniques, coupled with procedural difficulties within a team, such as alert fatigue and lack of understanding with environmental norms, make reliable detection of these events near impossible.
This talk summarizes prevalent and ongoing gaps across organizations uncovered by testing their defenses against a broad spectrum of attacks via Atomic Red Team. Many of these adversary behaviors are not atomic, but span multiple events in an event stream that may be arbitrarily and inconsistently separated in time by nuisance events.
Additionally, we introduce and demonstrate the open-sourced Event Query Language for creating high signal-to-noise analytics that close these prevalent behavioral gaps. EQL is event agnostic and can be used to craft analytics that readily link evidence across long sequences of log data. In a live demonstration, we showcase powerful but easy to craft analytics that catch adversarial behavior most commonly missed in organizations today.

Security is a major concern in computer networking which faces increasing threats as the commercial
Internet and related economies continue to grow. Virtualization technologies enabling
scalable Cloud services pose further challenges to the security of computer infrastructures,
demanding novel mechanisms combining the best-of-breed to counter certain types of attacks
. Our work aims to explore advances in Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI) in the context of
Software Defined Networking (SDN) architectures. While CTI represents a recent approach
to combat threats based on reliable sources, by sharing information and knowledge about
computer criminal activities, SDN is a recent trend in architecting computer networks based
on modularization and programmability principles. In this dissertation, we propose IntelFlow,
an intelligent detection system for SDN that follows a proactive approach using OpenFlow
to deploy countermeasures to the threats learned through a distributed intelligent plane. We
show through a proof of concept implementation that the proposed system is capable of delivering
a number of benefits in terms of effectiveness, altogether contributing to the security
of modern computer network designs.

Understanding Globus Data Transfers with NetSageGlobus
NetSage is an open privacy-aware network measurement, analysis, and visualization service designed to help end-users visualize and reason about large data transfers. NetSage traditionally has used a combination of passive measurements, including SNMP and flow data, as well as active measurements, mainly perfSONAR, to provide longitudinal network performance data visualization. It has been deployed by dozens of networks world wide, and is supported domestically by the Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC), NSF #2328479. We have recently expanded the NetSage data sources to include logs for Globus data transfers, following the same privacy-preserving approach as for Flow data. Using the logs for the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) as an example, this talk will walk through several different example use cases that NetSage can answer, including: Who is using Globus to share data with my institution, and what kind of performance are they able to achieve? How many transfers has Globus supported for us? Which sites are we sharing the most data with, and how is that changing over time? How is my site using Globus to move data internally, and what kind of performance do we see for those transfers? What percentage of data transfers at my institution used Globus, and how did the overall data transfer performance compare to the Globus users?

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.
