It has undergone a lot of developments in the past decade.These developments are mostly focused to reduce the adverse effects of CT scan as much as possible. • CT (Computed Tomography) scan is a modern imaging technique that has
undergone a lot of developments in the past decade.
• These developments are mostly focused to reduce the adverse effects of CT scan as
much as possible.
• Moreover, there are many ongoing researches on the post-processing of the
reconstructed image, filtering of noise in image reconstruction, reducing radiation

5. HIGHER SLICE SYSTEMS
What is a slice?
■ The total number of images taken for a single rotation of the gantry is known as
slice.
• Nowadays CT scanners are going further higher beyond the 64-slice with vendors
offering 128-slice, 256-slice, 320-slice and 640-slice systems.
• The higher-slice systems offer an advantage in perfusion imaging over 64-slice,
because of its ability to image the entire heart at once.
• A slight misalignments in 64-slice cardiac images lead to many artifacts. However, a
320-slice scanner image eliminates these artifacts. 5

• It also improved luminal diameter visualization for a more accurate diagnosis.

7. NEW DETECTOR TECHNOLOGY
• In the past few years, GE Healthcare, Philips, Siemens and Toshiba introduced new
detector technology for their CT systems that uses microelectronic circuits.
• This technology reduces electronic noise and enables sharper images.
• New detectors can enable dual-energy spectral imaging on their newest devices.

8. ITERATIVE RECONSTRUCTION
• Until recently, all CT systems reconstructed images based on filtered back
projection because it was fast.
• However, with rapid advances in computing power, all the major CT vendors now
offer iterative image reconstruction.
• This software revises the image over and over with multiple iterations to clean up
artifacts and clarify the image pixel by pixel.
• This enables CT scanning at much lower doses.

9. CONT.
• An analysis states that a few years back, in case
of cardiac scans, a patient received on an
average 20-30 mSv (Sv=Sievert) radiation per
dose. But with the software it is < 5 mSv now.
• Moreover, if this is combined with the new
detector technology then the value drops to < 1
mSv.

10. DECT IMAGING
• Dual Energy (Spectral) CT has the potential to become a
major trend in the coming years.
• Similar to the way a prism breaks visible light down into
its parent chemical elements on the periodic table for
analysis, spectral CT can break down X-ray photons by
chemical elements.
• Spectral CT is based on viewing the same anatomy at two
different kV energies.

11. Different anatomical features are enhanced at
different energy levels. Instead of needing to
scan a patient multiple times at different
energies to achieve various tissue enrichment,
spectral CT allows different energy views to
be created from a single scan.

12. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)
• AI holds the potential for improved diagnosis and the
road to the new future of CT scan.
• This will make CT scan more quantitative, productive
and precise.
• Software Engineers of Enlitic is developing a deep
learning algorithm designed for use on picture
archiving and communication systems (PACS).
This system is still being researched further.

13. LOW DOSE CT
• Low Dose CT scan is getting more and more popularity with the mass especially
for people with dangers to CT scan.
• Low dose CT provides CT scan with effective low dose of x-ray radiation.
• This reduces the radiation exposure to 60% compared to conventional CT.
