The Brain Sensory Input Of Different Modalities Essay
The brain processes sensory input of different modalities simultaneously in cortical areas. Sensory
information of different modalities is either processed independently before being integrated to
provide an overall picture of our surroundings, or cross modal interaction occurs before integration.
We compared visual evoked potentials (VEPs) evoked when attention is directed toward either visual
or auditory stimuli and found no difference in mean P100 when attention was directed toward visual
stimuli (2.41x10 5 ยฑ 6.43x10 5 V, n=10) or auditory stimuli (1.68x10 5 ยฑ 1.93x10 5 V, n=10). This
evidence suggests that processing of visual information is unaffected by the concurrent processing of
auditory information.
Introduction
The human brain receives input containing sensory information of different modalities from the
surrounding environment. This information is processed in different areas of the brain that do not
function in isolation and exhibit interactive plasticity (Roe et al., 1990). The processed information
evokes activity in different cortical areas responsible for processing senses and is integrated to give
coherent, detailed information (Molholm et al., 2002).
Increasing attention to visual stimuli results in a stronger response at the neuronal level (Reynolds
Chelazzi, 2004). The capability to retain working memory of a visual stimulus is enhanced when
attention is fully focused on the stimulus compared to when objects in the periphery of focus act as

Theme Of Resilience In Defending Jacob
Resilience is defined as the quality that allows people to be knocked down and come back stronger
than ever. Resilience is demonstrated throughout the novel Defending Jacob by William Landay, and
the ancillary texts If by Rudyard Kipling, and The Third and Final Continent by Jhumpa Lahiri though
different literary devices. The similar conflicts of Defending Jacob and Third and Final Continent help
develop a theme of resilience throughout the stories. Another literary device that helps to show this
theme in Defending Jacob and If is point of view. Finally, the theme is displayed once more in the
novel and Third and Final Continent through the use of characterization. The theme of keeping one s
head through troubled times and not giving up is developed through the use of conflict, point of view,
and characterization in Defending Jacob, If , and The Third and Final Continent . Both William
Landay and Jhumpa Lahiri use conflicts in their stories to demonstrate the theme of resilience and
perseverance. William Landay uses the conflict of Andy s belief in his son and Lahiri uses the narrator
s will to be successful as those characters motivation to continue working for what they believe in.
Andy and Laurie s visit to Dr. Vogel shows the beginning of a conflict in Defending Jacob. So? So
what does shoplifting have to do with murder? What s the difference if he took a candy bar or
something from CVS? What on Earth does that have to do with Ben Rifkin being brutally stabbed to
death? (Landay 146). Andy Barber never once stops believing that his son is innocent, even after this
leads to fights with Laurie and could potentially lead to divorce. However he fights for Jacob and he
knows they will get through the trial. While Andy Barber s conflict and perseverance is more mental,
the narrator of The Third and Final Continent has a more physical conflict he must overcome. The
theme of resilience is also developed in this text when the narrator is telling his son about his life at
the end of the story. Whenever he is discouraged, I tell him that if I can survive on three continents,
then there is no obstacle he cannot conquer (Lahiri). These words of wisdom demonstrate resilience
because the

Classical Gender Representation:
In Classical Hollywood the representation of women is certainly quite clear cut, our main two
definable types being that of the virgin and that of the whore. Our virgin represents the patriarchal
ideals of family within which at the time a woman should represent innocence, purity and certainly
deference to the male. Our whore figure shows contempt for family values through promiscuity or
perceived selfishness. This woman will often be a lot more influential then a virgin figure. Our whore
will inevitably be neutralised during the course of the film often through imprisonment or death. The
classic often revisited scene of a man grasping a woman by the upper arms is a good visual metaphor
for the dominance of man in classical Hollywood. Another good visual metaphor is that of the male
gaze. Very often we will see a point of view shot from the male perspective and we see that the object
of his gaze is a beautifully lit woman. She will not return his gaze as this would be a show of equality.
This representation of gender is consistent through all classical genres for example we have our
Femme Fatale in Noir and in westerns we have literal whores. Westerns also have what is known as
the tart with a heart which is a female living by questionable morals but often for reason of necessity.
She will also always be neutralised.

In Wilfred Owne s Poem, Dulce et Decorum Est, He Attempts...
Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen takes its title from the Latin phrase that means It is sweet and
becoming to die for one s country . Quite often the barbaric nature of war is over romanticized and the
author uses this title satirically to mock the public s deluded view of war. The poem graphically
describes the hell soldiers have to endure in their everyday battle for survival. These are tragedies of
war that only veterans can fully understand and Wilfred Owen tries to enlighten the general public of
these tragedies through imagery and similes throughout his poem. The speaker lets the reader know
right away about the reality of war. The invincible, fearless soldiers that are envisioned by the reader
are quickly transformed into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Using the simile like a man in fire or lime (line 12) the author describe the torture being inflicted upon
this man, floundr ing (line 12) as if he were burring alive. Two lines later the dying soldier is said to
drowning under a green sea (line 14), underlining his extreme pain and misery as he is described as
drowning and being burned alive simultaneously.
Since the soldiers could do nothing to help the dying man they flung (line 18) him behind a wagon.
This shows how people are dehumanized in war and their lives are disposable and can simply be flung
away to become another statistic. When the narrator says, In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
(line 15) it insinuates that all his dreams have been replaced by nightmares of the chilling memory of
how he could not do anything to help his fellow soldier. He can only replay the horrific memory of the
gas attack over and over inside his head. The reader cannot help but visualize this young soldier dying
a slow, painful death. This emphasizes the sarcasm in the title. How can anyone glorify a death so
horrible?
The speaker finally addresses the reader by saying, My friend, you would not tell with such high zest/
To children ardent for some desperate glory,/ The old Lie:/ Dulce et decorum est (lines 25 28). The
Latin phrase Dulce et decorum est is referred to as the old lie . The narrator bitterly believes that the

Schemas And Memory Essay
This essay will mainly focus on the effect of schemas on memory. Schemas describe a pattern of
behavior or thoughts that organizes categories of information and their relationships. Social and
cultural factors affect the schema, which means it influences what is saved in the memory. Information
are stored in our brain in the form of schema, it could be events, objects, ideas or people. Memory is
the capacity by which the brain stores and remembers information. People in different environment
have different schemas because they are introduced to different information. This essay will explain
the investigation on the relationship between social or cultural influences on memory and to what
extent it affects it. It will have a specific concern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The aim of this study was to investigate the cultural influence on schematic knowledge and memory.
They first tasted the ability of Kpelle children s memory and compared it with the US school students.
They made them remember an item from a word list organized into different categories. This test was
repeated many times. As a result, the Kpelle non schooled children hardly improved in the free recall
test after the age of 10, compared to the US children. They only remembered two items after 15 trials.
In other hand, the schooled Kpelle children performed the same as the US schooled children. The non
schooled Kpelle children performed well when the items were related to stories and cultural
knowledges. The study has provide a cause and effect relationships and cultural validity. It is reliable
but it lacks control group and also it is not clear that weather culture or schooling influenced the
memory. This study shows that culture affects memory. The Liberian students showed high
performance because of the task that was connected to the culture (culturally familiar task). Culture
affects schemas and the ability to remember. Memory is dependent on the surroundings and also
People remember things based on what is relevant in their daily

Essay On Mississippi River
The Mississippi River is the 4th longest and 9th largest river in the world with a length of 3,710 miles
and a maximum width of 2 miles. Its watershed includes 10 U.S. states and covers more than
1,245,000 square miles. It has more than 12 tributaries flowing into the river and has 43 dams just in
the Upper Mississippi.
The Mississippi River can be cut into three sections, the Upper Mississippi, Middle Mississippi, and
the Lower Mississippi. The Upper Mississippi starts from Lake Itasca to the Missouri River in St.
Louis, Missouri. The Middle Mississippi starts The Missouri River to the Ohio River in Cairo, Illinois.
The Lower Mississippi starts from the Ohio River to the Gulf Of Mexico.

It has no major dams and is largely calm. However, by this time the river has reached the Ohio river, it
has fallen from 1,475 feet above sea level to 315 feet.
The Lower Mississippi has 7 tributaries flowing into the river and flowing out into the Gulf of
Mexico. However, there is two routes to the Gulf due to modification to the river called the Old River
Control Structure, it takes 30% of the river flow into a different route through the Atchafalaya River
while the rest of the river flow goes through the main channel to New Orleans and to The Mississippi
river delta, exiting to the Gulf. .
The discharge of the Mississippi River is around 200 and 700 thousand cubic feet per second and
drops within 45 million metric tons of sediment per year. However, the amount of sediment discharge
is alarming since it was 400 million metric tons of sediment per year in the 1900s. This discharge of
sediment is largely on the Mississippi River delta, however, the modification with damns, wing dikes,
artificial lakes, levees and others causes the sediment to settle earlier in the river instead of
discharging it into the Mississippi River Delta. Before the Delta was growing, but now it is damaged

Mary Shelley s Frankenstein Essay
Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
Nineteen year old Mary Shelley didn t know when she began it that her ghost story would become an
enduring part of classic literature. Frankenstein is an admirable work simply for its captivating plot.
To the careful reader, however, Shelley s tale offers complex insights into human experience. The
reader identifies with all of the major characters and is left to heed or ignore the cautions that their
situations provide. Shelley uses the second person narrative style, allusions both to Coleridge s Rime
of the Ancient Mariner and the legend of Prometheus, and the symbols of both light and fire to warn
against the destructive thirst for forbidden knowledge.
Frankenstein s tale is narrated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Indeed, Shelley s several allusions to Coleridge s poem and the parallel plots that Frankenstein s
tragedy shares with the mariner s tale are intentional references meant to expose her warning purpose.
The mariner s tale is a mirror image of Frankenstein s identical yet backwards. The mariner is
punished for killing a Christ figure, Frankenstein is punished for vitalizing a demon both offenses
concern the illegitimate use of a godly prerogative and a disregard for the sanctity of life. Captain
Walton the warned of course, is also a mariner; however, he sails north and the Ancient Mariner the
warner sailed south. Walton himself is the first to allude directly to the rime saying that he goes to the
land of mist and snow, yet he swears that he shall kill no albatross nor, says he, shall he return as worn
and woeful as the Ancient Mariner (33). His vows are ironic, however, because he is saved from that
ancient fate only by listening to Frankenstein s tale which warns him against his hubristic quest for
knowledge. Toward the end of the book, Captain Walton weighs his chance for discovery and glory
against the lives of his men noting, It is terrible to reflect that the lives of all these men are endangered
through me. If we are lost, my mad schemes are the cause (181). Happily, Frankenstein s mariner like
caution proves effective for the captain who heeds the warning and turns back. The second person

Evaluation Model did the training achieve the desired results? Why or why not?
Results from the case study information indicate that the Sexual Harassment Prevention Training
program achieved the goal of increasing the likelihood that attendees would contact a manager and/or
human resources if sexually harassed. The training program also achieved the goal of decreasing the
likelihood that trainees would ignore sexually harassing behavior (Moskowitz, 2008). 4. Where any
unexpected questions raised from this training? If so which questions? If not, why do you think the
results were expected?
Yes. In this case study, or evaluation process, we found that the trainees would rather confront the
harassers face to face as a first line of defense rather than seeking help elsewhere. 5. Which levels of
information were collected and used in the Kirkpatrick Evaluation Model?

Bandwagon In Advertising
The media and advertisers have integrated themselves into our everyday lives without us even
realizing it and it s starting to appear that we ve almost become blind to it. Advertisement and the
media started out on billboards, metal signs, and newspapers but as time went on they began evolving
alongside technology. They began swarming the radio, consuming television, sneaking onto the big
screen, and most recently plastering themselves on every webpage that are focused specifically on the
consumer through their search history. This evolution has taken place with little to no attention given

countries such as Canada and France share the concerns of developing countries about U.S. cultural

credence and suggests that those concerns do not stem purely from paranoia. (Sawhney, 2007 p.43)
Modern Mass Communications also drives the global economy, and allows us to enjoy the lifestyles

values even though they are mostly globalized nowadays. As a result, they are still able to preserve its

The Auteur Theory Of Walt Disney s Film
Film has been a prominent topic in society since its conception. One of the most important physical
areas of film creation is located in Hollywood, California. Hollywood has produced some of the most
recognizable directors and film creators. Walter Elias Disney is one major example of this. He is still
extremely well known because of the vast business he created that is still thriving today. Many people
have argued that his career fits within either the classical auteur theory or the structuralist auteur
theory, but no argument has been as strong as the one that supports Disney s career as the commercial
auteur theory. The fact that Walt Disney s work was very much affected by elements outside of his
films shows that his career fits within the commercial, or consumer, auteur film theory. The
commercial auteur theory supports the idea that the author is what a person has cultivated to represent
themselves. Catherine Grant, the writer of www.auteur.com, calls this cultivation of an intentional self
an aura. She presents the idea that the creation of an aura is central to the success of one s
commercialism. This creation will result in a sort of cult following that will find the author s work to
be a commodity. This cult will begin to seek after certain films just because it was created by this
author. This author does not have to be a director. He or she could be an actor or anyone else involved
in the filmmaking process. This theory definitely fits the career of Walt

Informative Essay On French Podle
Come with me as I take a look at the Wonderful World of Poodles.
History
Although the national breed of France, the Poodle actually originated in Germany where it was used
as a water retriever. Many believe the name Pudel comes from the German word pudel which means
one who plays in water.
In fact, the famous Poodle Clip was created by hunters to help the breed swim faster and more
efficiently. The clip was not created as a decorative element. It was created to protect certain vital
organs and joints of the breed in cold water.

ability to learn makes it one of the most popular breeds in the world. It is considered one of the easiest
breeds to train. Also, its hypoallergenic coat makes it a favorite amongst owners. It does not shed, but
does require grooming on a regular basis. The breed adapts well to any living conditions, making it an
ideal pet for apartments. However, it is an active dog and does require daily exercise.
The Poodle carries itself proudly and has a very distinct air of dignity. The word elegant is most often
used to describe the breed. The Poodle is known to be shy, but sharp at the same time. Poodles are
reserved with strangers and unless trained at an early age, can bark excessively.

Rigor Murtis Research Paper
The Stiff Truth About Rigor Mortis Growing up, I have always been intrigued by murder mysteries.
My favorite shows consisted of Criminal Minds, CSI, and NCIS. From watching these shows episode
after episode, I have become familiarized with the term Rigor Mortis . Rigor Mortis is referred to as
the third stage of death, where the muscles in the body contract leaving the body stiff for a period of
time. Rigor Mortis occurs shortly after death, usually within three to four hours when the cells lose
their oxygen supply. In order for muscles to contract, ATP is required. After death, ATP is no longer
produced leaving the muscles tense. The process begins while a muscle is relaxed in its resting state.
In the resting state, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This causes the muscles to stiffen making the deceased body go into the Rigor Mortis stage due to the
accumulation of acid in the muscle tissue. Rigor Mortis hits its peak state about twelve hours after a
person s death and slowly decreases over the next forty eight to sixty hours. Although Rigor Mortis
may seem like a reliable source to use when predating a time of death, it is not. It is not ideal because
of the large spans of time it encompasses. The windows can vary by as much as 24 hours and there are
also several factors that can severely impact the onset and timeline of Rigor Mortis (Dillion, Death
and Kinetics. ). Other factors which can alter the reliability of prediction based on Rigor Mortis is if:
the deceased person had an illness, the temperature of the atmosphere in which the body was
discovered, what the person s activities were before death, and the conditions in which the body was
found. Due to the great list of factors that can modify the prediction of time of death using Rigor
Mortis, I do not think it is a reliable source for doctors, detectives, or scientists to predict a time of

The Apology Of Socrates In Book I Of The Republic
The Apology shows how other people perceive Socrates actions and how Socrates himself perceives
his actions; these different views are then evident in Book I of the Republic. The Greek word apologia
means defense. In The Apology of Socrates, Socrates is defending himself and his actions because of
the accusations against him corrupting the youth, atheism, and making the weaker argument the
stronger. As a philosopher, Socrates is dangerous to the city because of the relationship between
reason and revelation. Reason seeks to find why things are done in a certain way, and if they are found
to be done in an inadequate way, this inquisition calls into question the authority who are over the city.

However, Socrates asks if it is good to give back a madman a weapon he had loaned, because while
that fits Cephalus definition of justice, it is clear that no one could benefit from it. It is because of
Socrates innocently challenging important well respected men that was accused and put on trial.
Polemarchus takes on a similar definition of justice: justice is going good to friends and harm to
enemies (I, 332d). As a refutation to this, Socrates brings up the point that not every friend is actually
a good person and not every enemy is bad, which would be doing injustice to that person. Disproving
Polemarchus could be thought of as an example where Socrates is corrupting the youth which leads to
his being on trial. Thrasymachus argues that justice is the interest of the stronger. When Thrasymachus
makes this case, Socrates does not inquire but cross examines him, which gives the impression that
Socrates just wishes to put Thrasymachus out of business and does not care about actually changing
his mind. This also, presents another opportunity for Socrates to be accused of corrupting the

Man In The Water Analysis
Man in the Water Man creates the simplicity in which he lives, until faced with a choice; a choice that
can change the perception of life, love, and selflessness. The man in the water is perceived as a hero,
however, that man may have never quite known what it meant to be truly selfless. He is known for his

Dreams In Bless Me Ultima By Rudolfo Anaya
Dreams have many meanings some come in various different forms. Some dreams have very deep
meanings while others are just simply a product of your imagination. For example some people
experience Deja Vu. Deja Vu is when you have a dream of something and then it comes to life. People
who have had Deja Vu have been very surprised. A dream is a product of your imagination some are
just entertaining while others might be viewed as life lessons. Some dreams have deeper meanings
into them, you just have to look for them. For example some people have been having dreams of
going to a certain place then the next morning they end up in the same exact place. When you arrive at
the place you will have a certain feeling like you have been here before then you will remember that
your dreamed about it. Dreams have so much to to do with your imagination but some are no product
of your imagination but a product of reality. Dreams have many meanings they might be good, bad,
and scary ,whatever they are they are still a product of you. Likewise In Bless Me Ultima by Rudolfo

Key Elements For Fedex Corporations Success From...
The FedEx Corporation has been the world s leading express shipping and distribution company
almost three decades. In its time frame, it has expanded into five companies that is spread across 211
counties. The purpose of this paper is to introduce some of the key elements to FedEx corporations
success from strategy, innovation, planning, and ethics. This paper will also examine and compare the
four types of innovation theories in relation to innovation, planning, strategy, and business ethics.
Innovation Theories Innovation is defined as a method to doing or creating something different or
new. Before starting the innovation process, it is imperative that the plans create opportunities to add

Value innovation can be achieved by implementing a focus on innovation and creation of new market
possibilities (Value Innovation, 2015). Kim and Mauborgne explains how innovative companies beat
their competitors by creating products or services for which there aren t any present. With value
innovation it doesn t mean that a company develops or creates new goods or services. The goal of
value innovation is to create new demands in efforts to change the market as well as make competitors
irrelevant. Value innovation can improve existing services as well as lower the cost for the company
and their customers. The Blue Ocean Strategy is a strategy that companies use as an opportunity for
quick profitable growth. It focuses on those markets within the same industry that have not been in
existence; therefore, competition is not an issue. The Blue Ocean Strategy is different from the
traditional strategy in that the traditional strategy focuses on value and cost as a trade; however, for
Blue Ocean Strategy, companies pursue the expansion of a current product and low cost at the same
time (Kim W. and Mauborgne, R., 2004). The key elements of the Blue Ocean Strategy are: value
proposition, profit proposition, and people proposition; however, if one of these propositions is not
addressed properly, then it causes an imbalance in an effort to execute the strategy. (Kim, W.

Devolution In Uk
Even though Conservatives in particular believe it may lead to the break up of the UK because
demands for independence will be fuelled by devolution. It was argued that demand for devolution
was over exaggerated, especially in Wales, so it was unnecessary. It creates an extra layer of
government which will lead to confusion and increase costs to the taxpayer. In Scotland it was feared
that taxes there would inevitably rise because Scotland is less prosperous than the UK as a whole.
Nationalists have argued that devolution does not go far enough. British government has retained all
the important powers for itself. Nationalists also argue they should have a separate voice in Europe,

The Huns In Disney s Mulan
1.1 The Huns
From the very beginning the Huns in Disney s Mulan are portrayed as evil incarnate. In the opening
scenes, they are associated with an eerie atmosphere heightened by ominous sounds. The Huns do not
appear immediately; they are introduced by suspense, preceded by the appearance of a bird of prey. A
Chinese soldier, standing guard on the Great Wall of China is not even attacked by the falcon, he is
caught by its wing, almost as if the Huns were trying to warn their enemies of their arrival, showing
that they do not fear the resistance.
Fig. 1. Hayabusa the falcon. Walt Disney Animation Studios, 1998. Author s screenshot.
The picture that emerges is either that of the incompetent Chinese soldiers or an unknown danger,
sneaking around, undetectable even by trained eyes. As the falcon, which the audience later learns
belongs to the main antagonist, is the primary signal of an impending threat, the first climbing hook
thrown over the wall is supposed to draw attention towards the place from where the enemy comes.
The multitude of hooks that follows is just meant to build up the atmosphere and intimidate both, the
audience and the Chines soldiers in the cartoon. For one moment they look like a swarm, ready to
attack. It is clear now that the threat is extremely deadly, as the Huns come out of nowhere, in the ...

majority of the Hun soldiers as individual characters. Only Shan Yu and his elite warriors are shown in

with a swarm of insects; the Hun soldiers are not only deprived of their humanity, but also their status
as primates is uncertain. As a group they are no longer animal like, but they create a giant entity, like a

The total DFPR production time for an order was determined to be 47.40 minutes, which equated to a
daily capacity of 10.13 orders (81 boards). Further analysis of DFPR production times (as shown in
Exhibit 6) revealed that production time increases at a decreasing rate as order size increased.
Additionally, daily DFPR capacity, as measured in number of boards, increases at an increasing rate as
the order size is increased (See Exhibit 7). This correlates to DFPR production time per board being
significantly reduced as the order size is increased.
Thus, it is easy to see why a bottleneck might sometimes occur in the DFPR area of there are several
small orders going through back to back. If viewed in the same manner as costs in economics, the
setup time in this operation can be viewed as a fixed cost incurred regardless of production amount.
The rum time can be viewed as variable costs that are incurred at an incremental rate as production is
increased. Thus, smaller orders have a higher percentage of their production time represented by setup
time (fixed) as opposed to run time (variable).
Question 4
A last useful analysis is to examine the standard labor times required for various order sizes. Exhibit 8
displays the total standard labor times for order sizes of 1 board, 8 boards, and 200 boards. As

Analysis Of The Documentary Turning Into
It isn t rare for humans to take everyday things for granted. We often overlook the little
things, such as being able to drive to work or enjoy outdoor activities with our friends, and go on
about out busy days. While to us those things truly seem minuscule, for people with Acromegalic
Gigantism and Acromegaly they re monumental and life altering. The documentary Turning Into
A Giant follows the lives of three people this condition affects, and gives us a glimpse of what
living with it is like. While the main purpose of the documentary is to educate, it also carries a
message that tells us to value the little things and not take them for granted.
Gigantism is a condition which is caused by a tumor on the pituitary gland in the brain.
While only a few centimeters in size, it causes a giant surge in the growth hormone. However, a
lot more than just great height paints the person with it. It causes facial deformity, longer limbs,
increased risk of stroke and heart disease, and deepening of the voice. Gigantism can be
diagnosed before the end of puberty or after, and depending on that can cause different effects. If
it s diagnosed before puberty it s called Acromegalic Gigantism. The documentary presents Igor,
who s been diagnosed since six months of age. He surpassed his mother s height before the age
of seven. If Gigantism is diagnosed after puberty it s called Acromegaly, and causes patients to
grow outward rather than upward. Mary was diagnosed with it at 52,

Literary Analysis Of Anne Bradstreet s The Author To Her Book
When we create something, it s always challenging to reveal it to others. No matter how big or small
our creation might seem we will still have doubts about our work. For instance, writing an essay might
seem simple to some, but the reality of putting words together to state he or she s point is a difficult
task for anyone. In addition, when finished, we tend to have a great uncertainty buried deep down in
our mind reminding either our work is great or it needs improvement. Poet, Anne Bradstreet, in her
poem, The Author of Her Book, also experiences the uncertainty and frustration that creating
something with your own hands brings. In the poem, the author describes how imperfect and
unbearable her work seems to her. In addition, the author conveys her attitude throughout the poem in
order to reveal her attachment to her work; hence, the title of the poem The Author to Her Book.
Through the use of poetic devices such as diction, imagery, and metaphors, in order to reveal
Bradstreet s attitude towards her offspring/writing. Bradstreet begins her poem by adopting scathing
diction. The author conveys her attitude through the usage of words like, ill form d and raggs.
Bradstreet uses these words in order to help convey both how critical and masterful she is about her
work. In addition, she writes, [The] offspring of my feeble brain. In this line, Bradstreet emphasizes
the notion of being unsatisfied. The author utilities the word feeble brain in order to address

Charles Ives Symphony 4 Analysis
Charles Ives composed the Symphony No. 4 between 1910 and the mid 1920s. The symphony is
unique because it applies a multi layered complexity, which requires two conductors to synchronize
performance due to its huge, varied, and different orchestration. The symphony is composed of 4
different movements, which are Prelude (Maestoso), Comedy (Allegretto), Fugue (Andante moderato
con moto), and, lastly, the Finale (Very Slowly Largo Maestoso). All four symphonies combined take
30 minutes to play. In this assignment, I will discuss on the Finale: Very Slowly Largo Maestoso,
which duration is roughly 10 minutes. According to my analysis, it consists of an estimate of 13 layers
of musical events, marked by varying musical tones and rhythms, introduction of different orchestral
instruments, and changes in musical intensity. Below is my analysis divided into sections according to
the track time and variations of the orchestral events. Section 1 (00:00 01:04): The symphony begins
with intense background soundtrack along with marching drumbeats. Section 2 (01:04 01:14): The
intense soundtrack is brought to the foreground. It has a nostalgic tone, and the marching drumbeats
continue to play. Section 3 (01:14 01:23): A high pitched soundtrack is introduced to the symphony,
which then softens and tones down. The marching drumbeats cease playing. Section 4 (01:23 01:58):
The high pitched soundtrack continues playing alongside the nostalgic soundtrack in a synchronized
manner. The piano is also introduced then it dies abruptly. Section 5 (01:59 02:45): The piano and
violin play softly in the foreground in synchronized harmony. Section 6 (02:45 02:46): There is a
slight pause in the music where all the musical instruments cease playing. Section 5 (02:46 03:02):
There is a repeat in the slow rhythm of the violin and the piano. Section 4 (03:02 03:06): There is an
abruptly increased pitch in violin creating a nostalgic mood before toning down to the slow violin and
piano rhythm. This is slightly similar to the above section 4 at time 01:23. Section 5 (03:06 03:34):
Piano and violin again play in a slow rhythm. Section 7 (03:34 03:53): The pitch of the musical
instruments increase leading to a higher tone that creates

Persuasive Essay On Fahrenheit 451
There s this feeling, it s indescribable. You know it, I know it and evokes anxiety that consumes your
mind. Your heart begins to race, your stomach begins to drop and you frantically race to fix this

The Detrimental Effects Of Rejection Of A Child
Rejection can be described as the feeling of crushing weight on your chest. It is an emotion that can be
very difficult to recover from, and one may experience rejection from one s family of origin, a friend,
or a romantic partner. Rejection might be experienced on a large scale or in small ways in everyday
life. While rejection is typically a part of life, some types of rejection may be more difficult to cope
with than others. (Rejection, 2015) The rejection of a child has the most detrimental effects, simply
because they grow up their whole life with the feeling of being unwanted. We can relive and re
experience social pain more vividly than we can physical pain, hence why it s so much worse for a

In addition to causing mental health problems, bullying and social isolation can increase the likelihood
a child will get poor grades, drop out of school, or develop substance abuse problems, the researchers
say. (Nixon, 2010) The impact acceptance by peers during the adolescent years tends to relate to
common negative behaviors. (Wells, n.d.) Rejection creates surges of anger and aggression. In 2001,
the Surgeon General of the U.S. issued a report stating that rejection was a greater risk for adolescent
violence than drugs, poverty, or gang membership. Countless studies have demonstrated that even
mild rejections lead people to take out their aggression on innocent bystanders. School shootings,
violence against women, and fired workers going postal are other examples of the strong link between
rejection and aggression. (Winch, 2013) Children in the rejected aggressive group display high levels
of hostile and threatening behavior, physical aggression such as pushing and fighting, and disruptive
behavior such as breaking rules. (Newcomb, 1993) Michael Thompson, Ph.D. states, These kids are
not necessarily violent kids, but they are the kids who frequently lose control in school, act up
excessively, and wind up in the principal s office. (Social Groups and Cliques, n.d.) The need to be
one of the gang is stronger as children approach the teen years than at any other age. Children of all
ages need to feel that they fit in that they belong. (Wells, n.d.) They also may display a hostile
attribution bias or a tendency to assume that other children have hostile intentions in ambiguous
situations. Over longer periods, stability ratings for rejected children are higher than for the other
groups. In other words, children who are popular, neglected, or controversial when they are young

What Is The Relative Sodium Concentration Of Osmosis
I believe that an average potato has a relative sodium chloride concentration of .17 moles. I also
believe that an average potato has a relative glucose concentration of .95 moles. I have drawn these
conclusions based on the data my classmates and I have collected as well as my knowledge of
osmosis.
When placed in various levels of sodium chloride solutions, the mass of the potatoes increased less the
higher the concentration of sodium was in a given solution. For example, when placed in a solution of
pure tap water, the potato cubes exhibited an average mass change of +7.466%. Next, when placed in
a solution with a molarity of .05, the potato cubes exhibited an average mass change of +3.442%.
Finally, when placed in a solution with a molarity of .15, the potato cubes exhibited an average mass
change of +1.2%. When the potato cubes exhibit an average mass change of 0, it will mean that the
sodium chloride concentration is the same, both in the water and the potato. When the potato had a
mass change, it meant that the sodium chloride concentration was hypotonic, or lower inside the
potato cells than the water. However, as the mass change percentage grew lower and lower, the
difference in sodium chloride concentration also grew smaller. When the potato and water have the
same concentration, they will be isotonic, which means there is the same concentration both in the
potato and in the water. This will not cause the potato to change mass because the potato cells do not

The numbers are quoted on their
Web sites and in their corporate documents with a tremendous sense of pride. However, becoming
diverse should not be thought of as a goal. In reality it s a train that has
already left the station.
So what does diversity mean in today s corporate world? Many organizations have rapidly become
diverse. With shifting populations in the United States, achieving diversity doesn t require much
effort.
But for many, diversity is still a code word for af๏ฌrmative action. Many companies have developed
diversity programs, but their only metric for success is measuring the hiring and promotion of women

beyond hitting the numbers or compliance. It includes a wide range of activities designed to

Relationships Between Friendliness And Hostility And...
Abstract
In this study, we looked at the relationships between friendliness and hostility and agreeableness in
college students. We hypothesized that students who were high in friendliness would also be high in
agreeableness, while being low in hostility. We expected a strong correlation with agreeableness, and a
slightly strong correlation with hostility. However, when looking at all three traits we found that
agreeableness, while being the big umbrella it is, might not fully account for traits underneath it. As
well as friendliness and hostility having a stronger negative correlation than we anticipated.
Keywords: Friendliness, Hostility, Agreeableness, Personality
Friendliness in College age Students In this study we aimed to look at the personality trait of
friendliness. Friendliness can be defined as the good nature, amiability of one s personality. In other
words: how agreeable and outgoing one is towards others. Friendliness has been found to be more
prevalent in females than males (Moskowitz, 1993), and has been found to be generalized across
situations. In this research we want to look at college students to see if there is any significance
between friendliness and aggressiveness. To do this we have created our own friendliness scale and
compared it to the Iowa State Hostility Scale (Dill, Anderson, Anderson, Deuser, 1997) and the
agreeableness items from the Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) (Gosling, Augustine, Vazire,
Holtzman, Gaddis, 2011).

the text is saying is that this world set up so that people can be self evident. He feels that nations
should be independent and that the earth belongs to the living generations. According to the author,
not to find out new principles, or new arguments, never before thought of... but to place before
mankind the common sense of the subject, in terms so plain and firm as to command their assent, and
to justify ourselves in the independent stand we are compelled to take, (Jefferson 10). To continue,
what Jefferson is saying is that mankind has a compelling sense to take an independent stand. This is
something that is and should be common sense to Americans. This is how we justify ourselves. Lastly,
Whitman shows his identity through his self pride. Self pride is when an individual shows pride in
oneself. It could be through things like goals and accomplishments, or even your looks or the way you
go about things. People should also show pride in their opinions and

The key factor to any organisation is the ability to attract and retain the best talent in the market. This
is essential if your business is among the high competitors were specialised skills are in high demand.
The following will demonstrate how through employer branding an organisation can strengthen their
relationship with both existing and potential employees. Also how effective communication of the
brands values, personality and culture may impact on the creation of a strong employer brand. A
company will be perceived on how it conducts itself in the market across the board to how the
potential employee imagines what it would be like to work for that organisation. An effective brand
would highlight all the positive aspects such as a good employer, great place to work, and at the same
time influencing recruitment retention. As a result of this a positive impression of your company will
be visible within the market sector. Effective communication and organisational skills, alongside
personality and culture can create a positive perception of good employer branding. Employees should
feel some kind of responsibility toward the organisations employer branding. The reflection of

Smoking Cessation Essay
Smoking is a one of the major cause of increased mortality. More than 80% of smokers develop
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), making it one of the leading causes of death in the
world (p.786). Smoking Cessation or quitting smoking is one of the most cost effective ways to reduce
the risk of COPD. The article Evaluating the effectiveness of smoking cessation in the management of
COPD shows the various ways to control the disease by discontinuing the nicotine intake from
smoking. The author explains that pharmacotherapy (nicotine replacement therapy) and nurses
counselling conjointly can play an important role in the management of COPD. An enormous section
of this article focuses on different Smoking Cessation aids. Orisasami and Ojo present successful
effect of use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The central arguments are related to evaluating the effectiveness of quitting smoking in the
management of COPD. Orisasami and Ojo use research from several reliable sources to prove that
quitting smoking can manage the pulmonary disease. The authors have analyzed the data which is
logical and easy to follow, thus proving that Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease can be controlled
by using smoking cessation aids. The effective study of Toljamo et al (2010) presented, summarizes
the whole point of the article. The study shows the data of people who took bupropion as a smoking
cessation drug, people who didn t take any pharmacotherapy drug, and people who were motivated or
individually counselled alongside the use of bupropion. The data clearly points out how significant the
pharmacotherapy drugs are to COPD patients. Thus, it proves that the combination of the drug with
motivation is the best smoking cessation aid. The study also shows the data of people having COPD
who claimed to be healthy individuals, yet were dying internally; thus, showing us that smoking
cessation strategies needs attention and should be

Extracting Natural Gas From Shale And Other Rock Formation
Resulting of recent technological innovations improving the ability of extracting natural gas from
shale and other rock formation. The popularity of hydraulic fracturing remains leading in the direction
of new venture opportunities and increasing growth for the natural gas and oil production industry.
With the development, comes risk and scrutiny. According to Robert W. Howarth and Anthony
Ingraffea natural gas extracted from shale comes at too great a cost to the environment, and must be
illegal. Natural gas from shale remains vastly proposed as clean, comparable with oil and coal that can
decrease the outpouring while still satisfying rich fossil fuel over coming decades until a switch to
renewable energy sources exists. However shale gas being clean remains false, and it used as bridge
fuel stays a terrible idea. Shale rock formation can hold large quantities of natural gas, however that
gas remains mostly made up of methane. (Natural Gas:Should fracking stop?) For a long period of
time a majority of this gas was not economically reachable. However over the past decade, two new
technological advancements recently combined allowing extracting of the gas. This process is known
as hydraulic fracturing, in which extremely high pressured water with additional chemicals forced two
to three kilometers in the ground is extracting the gas. The manufacturing sources claim that fracking
has produced over one million natural gas wells since the 1940 s. Only 2% of these wells

Canada s Pipeline System Has An Enviable Safety Record
Natural Resources Canada ( NRC ) estimates there are 100,000 Km of large diameter oil and gas
transmission lines in Canada, about 73,000 Km of which are federally regulated by the National
Energy Board ( NEB ). Canada s pipeline system has an enviable safety record. The NRC reports that
between 2009 and 2013, 99.999% of the crude oil and petroleum products carried by NRC regulated
pipelines were delivered safely and between 2011 and 2013, 100% of products released by these
pipelines were recovered safely. Canada depends heavily on these pipelines to move oil and gas to
ports, refineries, businesses, and homes across the country. Their safe operation is central to the
Canadian way of life. Electronic attacks against pipelines around ... Show more content on

Natural gas pipelines in British Columbia were bombed six times between October 2008 and July
2009 by unknown perpetrators in acts classified by authorities as environmentally motivated domestic
terrorism. As alarming as these events are, physical attacks on pipelines are far easier to predict,
prevent, and resolve than cyber attacks.
Sophisticated hackers have expanded their threat matrix to include cyber attacks on the computer
systems used to operate the world s pipelines. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition ( SCADA )
systems are increasingly subject to targeted attacks. Cyber attacks can be perpetrated over the Internet
from anywhere in the world and are capable of disrupting safe pipeline operation causing spills,
explosions, or fires. The 2008 explosion on the Baku Tbilisi Ceyhan oil pipeline in Turkey was
reportedly caused by a cyber attack.
In 2012, the Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team of the US Department of
Homeland Security identified a series of cyber attacks on American natural gas pipelines that had
continued for more than a year. The pipeline companies reported targeted phishing attempts and
intrusions into multiple natural gas pipelines positively identified ... as related to a single campaign. In
2011, computer security company McAfee reported coordinated covert and targeted cyber attacks
originating in China, against multiple energy companies. The attacks began in 2009 employing

  • 2. The Brain Sensory Input Of Different Modalities Essay The brain processes sensory input of different modalities simultaneously in cortical areas. Sensory information of different modalities is either processed independently before being integrated to provide an overall picture of our surroundings, or cross modal interaction occurs before integration. We compared visual evoked potentials (VEPs) evoked when attention is directed toward either visual or auditory stimuli and found no difference in mean P100 when attention was directed toward visual stimuli (2.41x10 5 ยฑ 6.43x10 5 V, n=10) or auditory stimuli (1.68x10 5 ยฑ 1.93x10 5 V, n=10). This evidence suggests that processing of visual information is unaffected by the concurrent processing of auditory information. Introduction The human brain receives input containing sensory information of different modalities from the surrounding environment. This information is processed in different areas of the brain that do not function in isolation and exhibit interactive plasticity (Roe et al., 1990). The processed information evokes activity in different cortical areas responsible for processing senses and is integrated to give coherent, detailed information (Molholm et al., 2002). Increasing attention to visual stimuli results in a stronger response at the neuronal level (Reynolds Chelazzi, 2004). The capability to retain working memory of a visual stimulus is enhanced when attention is fully focused on the stimulus compared to when objects in the periphery of focus act as ... • 3. Theme Of Resilience In Defending Jacob Resilience is defined as the quality that allows people to be knocked down and come back stronger than ever. Resilience is demonstrated throughout the novel Defending Jacob by William Landay, and the ancillary texts If by Rudyard Kipling, and The Third and Final Continent by Jhumpa Lahiri though different literary devices. The similar conflicts of Defending Jacob and Third and Final Continent help develop a theme of resilience throughout the stories. Another literary device that helps to show this theme in Defending Jacob and If is point of view. Finally, the theme is displayed once more in the novel and Third and Final Continent through the use of characterization. The theme of keeping one s head through troubled times and not giving up is developed through the use of conflict, point of view, and characterization in Defending Jacob, If , and The Third and Final Continent . Both William Landay and Jhumpa Lahiri use conflicts in their stories to demonstrate the theme of resilience and perseverance. William Landay uses the conflict of Andy s belief in his son and Lahiri uses the narrator s will to be successful as those characters motivation to continue working for what they believe in. Andy and Laurie s visit to Dr. Vogel shows the beginning of a conflict in Defending Jacob. So? So what does shoplifting have to do with murder? What s the difference if he took a candy bar or something from CVS? What on Earth does that have to do with Ben Rifkin being brutally stabbed to death? (Landay 146). Andy Barber never once stops believing that his son is innocent, even after this leads to fights with Laurie and could potentially lead to divorce. However he fights for Jacob and he knows they will get through the trial. While Andy Barber s conflict and perseverance is more mental, the narrator of The Third and Final Continent has a more physical conflict he must overcome. The theme of resilience is also developed in this text when the narrator is telling his son about his life at the end of the story. Whenever he is discouraged, I tell him that if I can survive on three continents, then there is no obstacle he cannot conquer (Lahiri). These words of wisdom demonstrate resilience because the ... Classical Gender Representation: In Classical Hollywood the representation of women is certainly quite clear cut, our main two definable types being that of the virgin and that of the whore. Our virgin represents the patriarchal ideals of family within which at the time a woman should represent innocence, purity and certainly deference to the male. Our whore figure shows contempt for family values through promiscuity or perceived selfishness. This woman will often be a lot more influential then a virgin figure. Our whore will inevitably be neutralised during the course of the film often through imprisonment or death. The classic often revisited scene of a man grasping a woman by the upper arms is a good visual metaphor for the dominance of man in classical Hollywood. Another good visual metaphor is that of the male gaze. Very often we will see a point of view shot from the male perspective and we see that the object of his gaze is a beautifully lit woman. She will not return his gaze as this would be a show of equality. This representation of gender is consistent through all classical genres for example we have our Femme Fatale in Noir and in westerns we have literal whores. Westerns also have what is known as the tart with a heart which is a female living by questionable morals but often for reason of necessity. She will also always be neutralised.

  • 6. In Wilfred Owne s Poem, Dulce et Decorum Est, He Attempts... Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen takes its title from the Latin phrase that means It is sweet and becoming to die for one s country . Quite often the barbaric nature of war is over romanticized and the author uses this title satirically to mock the public s deluded view of war. The poem graphically describes the hell soldiers have to endure in their everyday battle for survival. These are tragedies of war that only veterans can fully understand and Wilfred Owen tries to enlighten the general public of these tragedies through imagery and similes throughout his poem. The speaker lets the reader know right away about the reality of war. The invincible, fearless soldiers that are envisioned by the reader are quickly transformed into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Using the simile like a man in fire or lime (line 12) the author describe the torture being inflicted upon this man, floundr ing (line 12) as if he were burring alive. Two lines later the dying soldier is said to drowning under a green sea (line 14), underlining his extreme pain and misery as he is described as drowning and being burned alive simultaneously. Since the soldiers could do nothing to help the dying man they flung (line 18) him behind a wagon. This shows how people are dehumanized in war and their lives are disposable and can simply be flung away to become another statistic. When the narrator says, In all my dreams, before my helpless sight, (line 15) it insinuates that all his dreams have been replaced by nightmares of the chilling memory of how he could not do anything to help his fellow soldier. He can only replay the horrific memory of the gas attack over and over inside his head. The reader cannot help but visualize this young soldier dying a slow, painful death. This emphasizes the sarcasm in the title. How can anyone glorify a death so horrible? The speaker finally addresses the reader by saying, My friend, you would not tell with such high zest/ To children ardent for some desperate glory,/ The old Lie:/ Dulce et decorum est (lines 25 28). Mary Shelley s Frankenstein Essay Mary Shelley s Frankenstein Nineteen year old Mary Shelley didn t know when she began it that her ghost story would become an enduring part of classic literature. The reader identifies with all of the major characters and is left to heed or ignore the cautions that their situations provide. Indeed, Shelley s several allusions to Coleridge s poem and the parallel plots that Frankenstein s tragedy shares with the mariner s tale are intentional references meant to expose her warning purpose. The mariner s tale is a mirror image of Frankenstein s identical yet backwards. The mariner is punished for killing a Christ figure, Frankenstein is punished for vitalizing a demon both offenses concern the illegitimate use of a godly prerogative and a disregard for the sanctity of life. Captain Walton the warned of course, is also a mariner; however, he sails north and the Ancient Mariner the warner sailed south. Walton himself is the first to allude directly to the rime saying that he goes to the land of mist and snow, yet he swears that he shall kill no albatross nor, says he, shall he return as worn and woeful as the Ancient Mariner (33). His vows are ironic, however, because he is saved from that ancient fate only by listening to Frankenstein s tale which warns him against his hubristic quest for knowledge. Toward the end of the book, Captain Walton weighs his chance for discovery and glory against the lives of his men noting, It is terrible to reflect that the lives of all these men are endangered through me. • 13. The Auteur Theory Of Walt Disney s Film Film has been a prominent topic in society since its conception. One of the most important physical areas of film creation is located in Hollywood, California. Hollywood has produced some of the most recognizable directors and film creators. Walter Elias Disney is one major example of this. He is still extremely well known because of the vast business he created that is still thriving today. Many people have argued that his career fits within either the classical auteur theory or the structuralist auteur theory, but no argument has been as strong as the one that supports Disney s career as the commercial auteur theory. The fact that Walt Disney s work was very much affected by elements outside of his films shows that his career fits within the commercial, or consumer, auteur film theory. The commercial auteur theory supports the idea that the author is what a person has cultivated to represent themselves. Catherine Grant, the writer of www.auteur.com, calls this cultivation of an intentional self an aura. She presents the idea that the creation of an aura is central to the success of one s commercialism. This creation will result in a sort of cult following that will find the author s work to be a commodity. This cult will begin to seek after certain films just because it was created by this author. From watching these shows episode after episode, I have become familiarized with the term Rigor Mortis . Rigor Mortis is referred to as the third stage of death, where the muscles in the body contract leaving the body stiff for a period of time. Rigor Mortis occurs shortly after death, usually within three to four hours when the cells lose their oxygen supply. In order for muscles to contract, ATP is required. Polemarchus takes on a similar definition of justice: justice is going good to friends and harm to enemies (I, 332d). As a refutation to this, Socrates brings up the point that not every friend is actually a good person and not every enemy is bad, which would be doing injustice to that person. Disproving Polemarchus could be thought of as an example where Socrates is corrupting the youth which leads to his being on trial. Thrasymachus argues that justice is the interest of the stronger. Some dreams have very deep meanings while others are just simply a product of your imagination. For example some people experience Deja Vu. Deja Vu is when you have a dream of something and then it comes to life. People who have had Deja Vu have been very surprised. When you arrive at the place you will have a certain feeling like you have been here before then you will remember that your dreamed about it. Value innovation can be achieved by implementing a focus on innovation and creation of new market possibilities (Value Innovation, 2015). Kim and Mauborgne explains how innovative companies beat their competitors by creating products or services for which there aren t any present. With value innovation it doesn t mean that a company develops or creates new goods or services. The goal of value innovation is to create new demands in efforts to change the market as well as make competitors irrelevant. Value innovation can improve existing services as well as lower the cost for the company and their customers. The Blue Ocean Strategy is a strategy that companies use as an opportunity for quick profitable growth. It focuses on those markets within the same industry that have not been in existence; therefore, competition is not an issue. The Blue Ocean Strategy is different from the traditional strategy in that the traditional strategy focuses on value and cost as a trade; however, for Blue Ocean Strategy, companies pursue the expansion of a current product and low cost at the same time (Kim W. and Mauborgne, R., 2004). The key elements of the Blue Ocean Strategy are: value proposition, profit proposition, and people proposition; however, if one of these propositions is not addressed properly, then it causes an imbalance in an effort to execute the strategy. In the opening scenes, they are associated with an eerie atmosphere heightened by ominous sounds. The Huns do not appear immediately; they are introduced by suspense, preceded by the appearance of a bird of prey. A Chinese soldier, standing guard on the Great Wall of China is not even attacked by the falcon, he is caught by its wing, almost as if the Huns were trying to warn their enemies of their arrival, showing that they do not fear the resistance. The picture that emerges is either that of the incompetent Chinese soldiers or an unknown danger, sneaking around, undetectable even by trained eyes. As the falcon, which the audience later learns belongs to the main antagonist, is the primary signal of an impending threat, the first climbing hook thrown over the wall is supposed to draw attention towards the place from where the enemy comes. The multitude of hooks that follows is just meant to build up the atmosphere and intimidate both, the audience and the Chines soldiers in the cartoon. Further analysis of DFPR production times (as shown in Exhibit 6) revealed that production time increases at a decreasing rate as order size increased. Additionally, daily DFPR capacity, as measured in number of boards, increases at an increasing rate as the order size is increased (See Exhibit 7). This correlates to DFPR production time per board being significantly reduced as the order size is increased. Thus, it is easy to see why a bottleneck might sometimes occur in the DFPR area of there are several small orders going through back to back. If viewed in the same manner as costs in economics, the setup time in this operation can be viewed as a fixed cost incurred regardless of production amount. The rum time can be viewed as variable costs that are incurred at an incremental rate as production is increased. Thus, smaller orders have a higher percentage of their production time represented by setup time (fixed) as opposed to run time (variable). We often overlook the little things, such as being able to drive to work or enjoy outdoor activities with our friends, and go on about out busy days. While to us those things truly seem minuscule, for people with Acromegalic Gigantism and Acromegaly they re monumental and life altering. The documentary Turning Into A Giant follows the lives of three people this condition affects, and gives us a glimpse of what living with it is like. While the main purpose of the documentary is to educate, it also carries a message that tells us to value the little things and not take them for granted. Gigantism is a condition which is caused by a tumor on the pituitary gland in the brain. While only a few centimeters in size, it causes a giant surge in the growth hormone. However, a lot more than just great height paints the person with it. It causes facial deformity, longer limbs, increased risk of stroke and heart disease, and deepening of the voice. Gigantism can be diagnosed before the end of puberty or after, and depending on that can cause different effects. If it s diagnosed before puberty it s called Acromegalic Gigantism. The documentary presents Igor, who s been diagnosed since six months of age. He surpassed his mother s height before the age of seven. If Gigantism is diagnosed after puberty it s called Acromegaly, and causes patients to grow outward rather than upward. Mary was diagnosed with it at 52, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

No matter how big or small our creation might seem we will still have doubts about our work. For instance, writing an essay might seem simple to some, but the reality of putting words together to state he or she s point is a difficult task for anyone. In addition, when finished, we tend to have a great uncertainty buried deep down in our mind reminding either our work is great or it needs improvement. Poet, Anne Bradstreet, in her poem, The Author of Her Book, also experiences the uncertainty and frustration that creating something with your own hands brings. In the poem, the author describes how imperfect and unbearable her work seems to her. In addition, the author conveys her attitude throughout the poem in order to reveal her attachment to her work; hence, the title of the poem The Author to Her Book. The symphony is unique because it applies a multi layered complexity, which requires two conductors to synchronize performance due to its huge, varied, and different orchestration. The symphony is composed of 4 different movements, which are Prelude (Maestoso), Comedy (Allegretto), Fugue (Andante moderato con moto), and, lastly, the Finale (Very Slowly Largo Maestoso). All four symphonies combined take 30 minutes to play. In this assignment, I will discuss on the Finale: Very Slowly Largo Maestoso, which duration is roughly 10 minutes. According to my analysis, it consists of an estimate of 13 layers of musical events, marked by varying musical tones and rhythms, introduction of different orchestral instruments, and changes in musical intensity. Below is my analysis divided into sections according to the track time and variations of the orchestral events. Section 1 (00:00 01:04): The symphony begins with intense background soundtrack along with marching drumbeats. Section 2 (01:04 01:14): The intense soundtrack is brought to the foreground. It has a nostalgic tone, and the marching drumbeats continue to play. Section 3 (01:14 01:23): A high pitched soundtrack is introduced to the symphony, which then softens and tones down. The marching drumbeats cease playing. Section 4 (01:23 01:58): The high pitched soundtrack continues playing alongside the nostalgic soundtrack in a synchronized manner. The piano is also introduced then it dies abruptly. Section 5 (01:59 02:45): The piano and violin play softly in the foreground in synchronized harmony. Section 6 (02:45 02:46): There is a slight pause in the music where all the musical instruments cease playing. Section 5 (02:46 03:02): There is a repeat in the slow rhythm of the violin and the piano. Section 4 (03:02 03:06): There is an abruptly increased pitch in violin creating a nostalgic mood before toning down to the slow violin and piano rhythm. This is slightly similar to the above section 4 at time 01:23. Section 5 (03:06 03:34): Piano and violin again play in a slow rhythm. In 2001, the Surgeon General of the U.S. issued a report stating that rejection was a greater risk for adolescent violence than drugs, poverty, or gang membership. Countless studies have demonstrated that even mild rejections lead people to take out their aggression on innocent bystanders. School shootings, violence against women, and fired workers going postal are other examples of the strong link between rejection and aggression. (Winch, 2013) Children in the rejected aggressive group display high levels of hostile and threatening behavior, physical aggression such as pushing and fighting, and disruptive behavior such as breaking rules. (Social Groups and Cliques, n.d.) The need to be one of the gang is stronger as children approach the teen years than at any other age. Children of all ages need to feel that they fit in that they belong. (Wells, n.d.) They also may display a hostile attribution bias or a tendency to assume that other children have hostile intentions in ambiguous situations. I also believe that an average potato has a relative glucose concentration of .95 moles. I have drawn these conclusions based on the data my classmates and I have collected as well as my knowledge of osmosis. When placed in various levels of sodium chloride solutions, the mass of the potatoes increased less the higher the concentration of sodium was in a given solution. For example, when placed in a solution of pure tap water, the potato cubes exhibited an average mass change of +7.466%. Next, when placed in a solution with a molarity of .05, the potato cubes exhibited an average mass change of +3.442%. Finally, when placed in a solution with a molarity of .15, the potato cubes exhibited an average mass change of +1.2%. When the potato cubes exhibit an average mass change of 0, it will mean that the sodium chloride concentration is the same, both in the water and the potato. When the potato had a mass change, it meant that the sodium chloride concentration was hypotonic, or lower inside the potato cells than the water. However, as the mass change percentage grew lower and lower, the difference in sodium chloride concentration also grew smaller. When the potato and water have the same concentration, they will be isotonic, which means there is the same concentration both in the potato and in the water. This will not cause the potato to change mass because the potato cells do not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We hypothesized that students who were high in friendliness would also be high in agreeableness, while being low in hostility. We expected a strong correlation with agreeableness, and a slightly strong correlation with hostility. However, when looking at all three traits we found that agreeableness, while being the big umbrella it is, might not fully account for traits underneath it. As well as friendliness and hostility having a stronger negative correlation than we anticipated. Keywords: Friendliness, Hostility, Agreeableness, Personality Friendliness in College age Students In this study we aimed to look at the personality trait of friendliness. Friendliness can be defined as the good nature, amiability of one s personality. In other words: how agreeable and outgoing one is towards others. Friendliness has been found to be more prevalent in females than males (Moskowitz, 1993), and has been found to be generalized across situations. In this research we want to look at college students to see if there is any significance between friendliness and aggressiveness. To do this we have created our own friendliness scale and compared it to the Iowa State Hostility Scale (Dill, Anderson, Anderson, Deuser, 1997) and the agreeableness items from the Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) (Gosling, Augustine, Vazire, Holtzman, Gaddis, 2011). ... The central arguments are related to evaluating the effectiveness of quitting smoking in the management of COPD. Orisasami and Ojo use research from several reliable sources to prove that quitting smoking can manage the pulmonary disease. The authors have analyzed the data which is logical and easy to follow, thus proving that Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease can be controlled by using smoking cessation aids. The effective study of Toljamo et al (2010) presented, summarizes the whole point of the article. The study shows the data of people who took bupropion as a smoking cessation drug, people who didn t take any pharmacotherapy drug, and people who were motivated or individually counselled alongside the use of bupropion. The data clearly points out how significant the pharmacotherapy drugs are to COPD patients. Thus, it proves that the combination of the drug with motivation is the best smoking cessation aid. The study also shows the data of people having COPD who claimed to be healthy individuals, yet were dying internally; thus, showing us that smoking cessation strategies needs attention and should be ... • 42. Extracting Natural Gas From Shale And Other Rock Formation Resulting of recent technological innovations improving the ability of extracting natural gas from shale and other rock formation. The popularity of hydraulic fracturing remains leading in the direction of new venture opportunities and increasing growth for the natural gas and oil production industry. With the development, comes risk and scrutiny. According to Robert W. Howarth and Anthony Ingraffea natural gas extracted from shale comes at too great a cost to the environment, and must be illegal. Natural gas from shale remains vastly proposed as clean, comparable with oil and coal that can decrease the outpouring while still satisfying rich fossil fuel over coming decades until a switch to renewable energy sources exists. However shale gas being clean remains false, and it used as bridge fuel stays a terrible idea. Shale rock formation can hold large quantities of natural gas, however that gas remains mostly made up of methane. (Natural Gas:Should fracking stop?) For a long period of time a majority of this gas was not economically reachable. However over the past decade, two new technological advancements recently combined allowing extracting of the gas. This process is known as hydraulic fracturing, in which extremely high pressured water with additional chemicals forced two to three kilometers in the ground is extracting the gas. The manufacturing sources claim that fracking has produced over one million natural gas wells since the 1940 s. Only 2% of these wells ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Canada s Pipeline System Has An Enviable Safety Record Natural Resources Canada ( NRC ) estimates there are 100,000 Km of large diameter oil and gas transmission lines in Canada, about 73,000 Km of which are federally regulated by the National Energy Board ( NEB ). Canada s pipeline system has an enviable safety record. The NRC reports that between 2009 and 2013, 99.999% of the crude oil and petroleum products carried by NRC regulated pipelines were delivered safely and between 2011 and 2013, 100% of products released by these pipelines were recovered safely. Canada depends heavily on these pipelines to move oil and gas to ports, refineries, businesses, and homes across the country. Their safe operation is central to the Canadian way of life. Electronic attacks against pipelines around ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Natural gas pipelines in British Columbia were bombed six times between October 2008 and July 2009 by unknown perpetrators in acts classified by authorities as environmentally motivated domestic terrorism. As alarming as these events are, physical attacks on pipelines are far easier to predict, prevent, and resolve than cyber attacks. Sophisticated hackers have expanded their threat matrix to include cyber attacks on the computer systems used to operate the world s pipelines. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition ( SCADA ) systems are increasingly subject to targeted attacks. Cyber attacks can be perpetrated over the Internet from anywhere in the world and are capable of disrupting safe pipeline operation causing spills, explosions, or fires. The 2008 explosion on the Baku Tbilisi Ceyhan oil pipeline in Turkey was reportedly caused by a cyber attack. In 2012, the Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team of the US Department of Homeland Security identified a series of cyber attacks on American natural gas pipelines that had continued for more than a year. The pipeline companies reported targeted phishing attempts and intrusions into multiple natural gas pipelines positively identified ... as related to a single campaign. In 2011, computer security company McAfee reported coordinated covert and targeted cyber attacks originating in China, against multiple energy companies. The attacks began in 2009 employing ...
