makes circumstance seem evil or bad. The action that he characterized circumstance of doing
expresses that challenges can come at the worst times. Even more, he is describing that
circumstance has a fell clutch implying that he went through a horribly long and dark period.
This gives the reader a perspective that occasionally things do not always go their way. It
connects to the theme that difficult times are always thrown at one s way and that they may not
always be prepared for the challenging part of those times. Henley took advantage of
personification once again to relate to his theme. Henley shows his courage through his dark
times by saying, And yet the menace of the years/Finds, and shall find, me unafraid. (11 12) Here,
Henley makes the word year seem mean or cruel. He does this by describing that it is a menace
otherwise implying that it is harsh or cruel. By including that it searches for him, he also indicates
that he ran into difficult times often, but stays optimistic by saying that it found him unafraid. This

A closer study at Mammy , the quintessential Southern African American nanny, as the core icon of
African American womanhood, during the Civil War, particularly in films, who has figured
prominently on memory, reveals that her depiction and characteristics skewed the collective and
individual memory of the role of real African American women, such as Harriet Tubman. This
powerful figure in Southern households created stereotyped images of African Americanwomen
slaves, i.e. Gone with the Wind (1939), allowing audiences to believe this to be an accurate
depiction of African American women rather than recognizing the major contributions they made in
the Civil War. The stereotype overshadowed the real efforts and work of African American women,
both enslaved and freed; and left a false image which affected women then and now.
Particularly, in Civil War era films, African American women were predominantly shown as
having a robust figure, a constant smile, and a happy disposition, i.e. mammies. By the time the
flood of Civil War features began in 1908, these racist cliches were set in stone (Chadwick 80).
The archetype of Mammy became a stereotype created by white producers in an effort to portray
African American women in a more pleasing light, to satisfy white audiences. Filmmakers actions

In Shakespeare s The Merchant of Venice, there is a conflict between two understandings of
justice justice as the letter of the law and justice as mercy. Because this play is typically

going to the late night fast food restaurant for food; all the normal things a teen is supposed to
experience on that special night. But for me, that night included a not so normal experience.
As a 16 years old African American male, I found myself drivingdown 380, a major highway in
