Raisen District is located in central Madhya Pradesh. It is bounded by several other districts. Raisen is known for the 800 year old Raisen Fort situated on top of a hill, which has temples, palaces, and water reservoirs. The fort has changed control over time, being ruled by Hindu kings until the 16th century when it was captured by Sher Shah Suri and later the Nawab of Bhopal. The district also features the Badal Mahal palace near Gaib Sagar Lake, known for its architectural designs combining Mughal and Rajput styles.
