Vitamin C, glutathione, and various enzymes have radioprotective effects against cellular damage caused by ionizing radiation. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that can scavenge reactive oxygen species produced by radiation and protect DNA and membranes. Glutathione is also a free radical scavenger that protects against radiation damage. Various enzymes also help scavenge free radicals produced by radiation. The presentation concludes that vitamin C, glutathione, and enzymes play an important role in mitigating the effects of ionizing radiation exposure.

Various prospective studies have indicated the antioxidant potency of tannic acid in several models. However, there is no clear-cut evidence revealing that the reported antioxidant properties of tannic acid remains potent regardless of the lipid sources and pro-oxidants employed for the oxidative assault. Hence, this study sought to investigate the antioxidant properties of tannic acid against cerebral and hepatic lipid peroxidation induced by several pro-oxidants (Iron (II) sulfate, Sodium nitroprusside, cyclophosphamide and acetaminophen) in vitro. Rats were decapitated under mild ether anesthesia and the tissues were rapidly dissected, placed on ice, weighed and immediately homogenized in cold 50 mM Tris-HCl, pH 7.4 (1/10, w/v). The homogenates were centrifuged for 10 min at 4000 g to yield a pellet that was discarded and a low-speed supernatant (S1). Our results indicated that Fe (II) showed the highest pro-oxidative effects in both tissues lipids. Furthermore, tannic acid demonstrated potent inhibitory effects against lipid peroxidation in both tissues lipids regardless of the pro-oxidant employed. To this end, there is a dire need to exploit the protective benefits of tannic acid as a potential exogenous antioxidant against lipid peroxidation with a view to providing solution to the global oxidative stress menace.

them inactive. The maintenance of balance is a continuous process inside cells to keep them functioning normally. When
generation of ROS exceeds the level of endogenous and externally added AOs , cells are driven to pathogenic state leading to
diseases. A variety of dietary AOs are available from various sources of fruits and vegetables. This paper aims to review the
molecular mechanisms of oxidative stress, generation and reactions of ROS with vital molecules such as DNA, Protein and
membrane and involvement of ROS in the induction of cancer and other diseases. An attempt is made to suggest ways to reduce
cancer incidence risks , need to modify dietary foods by consuming vegetables, fruits for chemo prevention. An example has been
given to emphasize the role of curcumin as an antioxidant in the mechanism of chemoprevention.

Current medical management of the Acute Radiation Syndromes (ARS) does not include immune prophylaxis based on the Antiradiation Vaccine. Existing principles for the treatment of acute radiation syndromes are based on the replacement and supportive therapy. Haemotopoietic cell transplantation is recomended as an important method of treatment of a Haemopoietic form of the ARS. Though in the different hospitals and institutions, 31 pa-tients with a haemopoietic form have previously undergone transplantation with stem cells, in all cases(100%) the transplantants were rejected. Lethality rate was 87%.(N.Daniak et al. 2005).
Conclusion: Specific antibodies – possible antagonists of Toll like receptors and can inhibit massive activation of lysosomal hydrolytic enzymes and prevent radiation toxicity after high doses of Radiation.

Radiation exist ubiquitously in the environment
since the Earth’s creation in soil, water and plants.
Radiation exposure is a concern in the health
industry and other occupations in the world.
Elevated radiation levels have been detected
following Chernobyl and Fukushima Daiichi
accidents on April 1986 and March 2011
respectively. This raised the need for finding out

Vitamin C or L-ascorbic acid, or simply
ascorbate (the anion of ascorbic acid), a water
soluble vitamin is an essential nutrient for humans
and certain other animal species
The name 'vitamin C' always refers to the L-
enantiomer of ascorbic acid and its oxidized forms
Ascorbic acid is a weak sugar acid structurally
related to glucose. In biological systems, ascorbic
acid can be found only at low pH, but in neutral
solutions above pH 5 is predominantly found in the
ionized form, ascorbate.

The biological role of ascorbate is to act as a
reducing agent, donating electrons to various
enzymatic and a few non-enzymatic reactions. The
one- and two-electron oxidized forms of vitamin C,
semidehydroascorbic acid and dehydroascorbic
acid, respectively, can be reduced in the body by
glutathione and NADPH-dependent enzymatic
mechanisms. The presence of glutathione in cells
and extracellular fluids helps maintain ascorbate in
a reduced state.

As seen earlier the effects of radiation are caused
mainly by the generation of reactive oxygen species
(ROS). These ROS interact with biological molecules
producing toxic free radicals leading to lipid
peroxidation and DNA damage
Lipid peroxidation has effects on biological
membranes and studies on lipid peroxidation can
provide important information about detrimental
effects of gamma-radiation.
15. Radioprotective Effect of Vitamin C
ROS can also alter the balance of endogenous
protective systems, such as glutathione and
enzymatic antioxidants (SOD, CAT and GPx)
defence system, thus the endogenous antioxidant
defences are inadequate to reduce the radiation
induced free radicals.
Appropriate antioxidant intervention may inhibit
or reduce free radical toxicity and thus offer
protection against radiation. Several dietary anti-
oxidants have been reported to decrease free
radical attack on biomolecule.
16. Radioprotective Effect of Vitamin C
Numerous studies have examined the radioprotective
effect of antioxidant free radical scavengers, which
protect the cell and its organic constituent molecules
from free radicals damage
Vitamin C have been reported to be an effective
antioxidant and free radical scavenger and, in vivo and
in vitro conditions, reduce oxidative and free radical-
induced damage to DNA and membranes in biological
systems
Vitamin C is an important dietary factor that has been
reported to decrease the adverse effect of ROS and RNS
by scavenging radicals or by neutralizing an array of
these radicals.

by the liver. It is also found in fruits, vegetables,

or preventing alcoholism, asthma, cancer, heart
