Radio Programme Review
For this assignment we had to create three radio shows of different contexts, one for an in-store
show, one for internet and one for a broadcast show. To do these shows we worked in groups of
three, I chose to take the lead on the In-store radio show and chose the ‘Carharrt’ shop to base it on.
To come up with ideas for my show I took into account what style of people shopped at Carharrt and
as a whole it was generally 16-21 year old males whom enjoyed deep house music or drum & bass so
this gave me a lead on exactly what sort of music I was going to broadcast to my audience and was
the first element in creating a successful In-store Radio show.
To choose my songs I generally chose songs which I’m familiar with which still stuck to what my
target audience would enjoy, this gave me an advantage as to giving information about the artists
and the song being played as with songs I’m not familiar with would result in me having to do more
research than usual in order to give my audience sufficient information.
The equipment we used was a digital software suite provided by synergy broadcast radio to create
and record our shows. Included in our suite was anincorporated sound board which had 2 music play
channels, a jingle channel anda news channel. There was also a cart on the programme in which we
could upload our jingles etc for fast and easy access. Before we created our show we each created
our own schedules to give ourselves a structure to work from this included; the song choices, when
to implement our jingles and news which made everything a lot easier when it actually came to
creating our show.
In order to create my own jingles we used software known as ‘REAPER’. This software was very
simplistic and did what we needed to do easily. I created three jingles, one for my In-store show, one
for Ben’s Internet show and one for Jacks Broadcast Radio show. First of all we recorded our voices
in a quite area and said things such as ‘this is joe bringing you an hour of dance for the Carharrt In-
store Radio show’. We then uploaded our voices to REAPER and could implement a backing track to
play behind our voices. We could also play around with the effects of our voices and create key
points to raise or lower the volume in certain parts of the track/voice. The backing track that I used
for the jingle for my In-store radio was Gorgon City – Real. This track is a very popular track and is in
the UK Dance charts so many people whom shop at Carharrt can relate to it more than a randomly
chosen track or one that wouldn’t suit my target audience.
After Recording my show and listening back to it I realised that I made a mistake of not
implementing enough offers going on within the shop or things such as that relating to Carharrt. A
positive side to my show is that I did back-sell every song before it was played (announced the artist
and song title before ultimately playing it).
The difference in recording the three shows was mainly the differences in speech to music ratio.
Broadcast radio generally has a lot more speech out of in-store and internet stations. Broadcast
radio has about 40% speech to 60% music played.
