This document discusses radiation therapy for lung cancer. It describes how radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells. It explains that radiation therapy may be given after chemotherapy to treat large tumors or sick patients. It also discusses the different types of radiation therapy, including external beam radiation therapy which is administered from outside the body over 20-36 treatments, and internal brachytherapy which places a radiation source inside the body during bronchoscopy. Finally, it notes that treatment is carefully planned to determine the needed radiation dose and location before daily treatments using skin marks or tattoos to target the same area.
Learn about the process of radiation therapy to treat soft tissue sarcoma, and how new radiation technology has improved treatment of the disease.
This presentation was given by Elizabeth H. Baldini, MD, MPH, radiation oncology director for the Center for Sarcoma and Bone Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. It was originally presented as part of the "15 Years of GIST/Soft Tissue Sarcoma Symposium," held on Sept. 12, 2015 at Dana-Farber in Boston, Mass.

Management of cacrinoma cervix: Techniques of radiotherapy (2D conventional, 3D Conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) and IMRT with a review of various contouring guidelines.
1.Aim of Radiotherapy
The goal of radiotherapy is to deliver a prescribed dose of radiation to the Target while sparing surrounding Healthy tissues to the largest extent possible
2.Organ Motion
Intra-fraction motion
during the fraction
Heartbeat
Swallowing
Coughing
Eye movement
Inter-fraction motion
- in between the fractions
Tumour change
Weight gain/loss
Positioning deviation
Breathing
Bowel and rectal filling
Bladder filling
Muscle relaxation/tension
3. Respiratory motion affects:
Respiratory motion affects all tumour sites in the thorax, abdomen and Pelvis. Tumours in the Lung, Liver, Pancreas, Oesophagus, Breast, Kidneys, prostate
Tumour displacement varies depending on the site and organ Location
Lung tumours can move several cm in any direction during irradiation
It is most prevalent and prominent in Lung cancers
4. Problems associated with respiratory motion during RT
Image acquisition limitations
Treatment planning limitations
Radiation delivery limitations
5. Methods to Account for Respiratory Motion
1. Motion encompassing methods
2. Respiratory gating methods
3. Breath hold methods
4. Forced shallow breathing with abdominal compression
5. Real-time tumor tracking methods
Summary:
The management of respiratory motion in radiation oncology is an evolving field
IGRT provides a solution for combating organ motion in radiotherapy
Delivering higher dose to tumor and less dose to normal tissue.
Limited clinical studies, needs to be studied further

2. Radiation Therapy
• Radiation therapy is the high-energy rays that are used to kill
cancer cells.
• Chest radiation can sometimes be given after chemotherapy
has been completed called sequential therapy, particularly in
people who have very large tumors or who are very sick when
they are initially diagnosed with the cancer.
• The radiation therapy
(http://lungcancersymptomsx.com/beating-lung-cancer-with-
proper-treatment-methods.html)helps so many patients to
get rid off from the cancer.
3.
4. Breathing Test
• The breathing test has been taken for the treatment before
the radiation therapy has been planned.
• The breathing tests measure how much air you can breathe in
and out.
• They also test about how much exercise you can do before
you get breathless.
5.
6. Types of Radiation therapy
• There two types of radiation therapy are involved in this
treatment here are 2 main types of radiation therapy:
• External beam radiation therapy
• Brachytherapy (internal radiation therapy)
7.
8. External Radiotherapy
• The radiotherapy for lung cancer can be given as a external
treatment.
• The Treatment has been given depends on your cancer cell
type.
• You may have 20 to 36 treatments to cure the lung cancer.
• There will be one treatment in each day will be conducted to
control the cancer cells.
9.
10. Internal Radiation Therapy
• This is also called brachytherapy or endobronchial therapy.
You have the treatment during a bronchoscopy.
• The radiation source is inside a narrow tube that the doctor
puts inside your airway for a few minutes.
• Doctors use this type of treatment to shrink a tumour that is
blocking or pressing on your airway and making breathing
difficult for you.
11.
12. Planning the treatment and ink marks
• Before you begin the treatment the radiotherapy should be
planned carefully.
• This means working out how much radiation you need to treat
the cancer and exactly where you need it.
• Once the
treatment(http://www.slideshare.net/danielvhenny/lung-
cancer-stage-3-symptoms-and-treatment-methodologies) has
planned your radiotherapy, they may put ink marks on your
skin to make sure they treat exactly the same area every day.
• They may also make pin point sized tattoo marks in these
areas.
13.
14. End of treatment
• Once your radiation treatments have been completed, or a
day or two before your last treatment, you will have a final
visit with your physician.
• During this visit, your doctor will perform an examination and
discuss follow-up care.
