PRESENTATION TOPIC
RACE ANDETHNICITY
WHATISRACE
 The term race refers to groups of people who have
differences and similarities in biological traits
deemed by society to be socially
significant meaning that people treat other people
differently because of them.
 Classifications of humans according to physical
characteristics
What is Ethnicity
 Ethnicity refers to shared cultural practices,
perspectives, and distinctions that set apart one
group of people from another.
 Groups with society that share things like culture,
traditions, language, race and religion etc.
( SUBORDINATEGROUP )
 A group of people who because of their physical
cultural and religions characteristics are singled out
from the others in the society.
( Louis worth 1945)
A group of people who are lack in power as compared
to the dominant group.
(DominantGroup)
 The sociological definition of dominant
group is a group with power privileges
and social status
=0=
 A group that controls the value system
and rewards in particular society.
Note
 In modern sociology the term majority
group doesn't refer to the numerical
majority
 Being a numerical minority isn't a
charactistics of being a minority group
 Sometimes larger groups can be considered
minority groups due to lack of their power
Examples
 In south Africa white people ruled whole
black peoples of south Africa.
 Bruisers ruled in sub continent 17th century
to the 19th century however Asian were large
in groups.
 Stereotypes are oversimplified ideas about groups of
peoples.
 They are the sayings of any body that cant be
proved.
 Any time you grouping races or individuals together
and make a judgment about them without knowing
them, this is an example of a stereotype. Racial
remarks, sexual remarks, and gender remarks are
the biggest stereotypes.
PREJUDICE
 Negative attitude towards about a person or group of
people without suffient knowledge.
 Prejudice refers to beliefs, thoughts, feelings, and
attitudes that someone holds about a group. A
prejudice is not based on experience; instead, it is a
prejudgment, originating outside of actual
experience.
DISCRIMINATION
 The unjust or prejudicial treatment of different
categories of people, especially on the grounds of
race, age, or sex, religion, health and other
indicators.
 Discrimination means treating a
person unfairly because of who they are or because
they possess certain characteristics. If you have been
treated differently from other people only because of
who you are or because you possess certain
characteristics, you may have been discriminated
against.
TypesOf Discrimination
 Direct Discrimination
 Under similar circumstances, when a person with a
protected characteristic is treated less favorably than
others, it is direct discrimination.
 For example – you have the qualifications and
experience necessary for the job but your application
is turned down because you are ‘too young’ or ‘too
old’.
INDIRECT DISCRIMINATION
If there is a rule or policy in the workplace that puts
you at a disadvantage as compared to others, it may be
considered indirect discrimination.
For example – an organization includes a clause that
forces all employees to work on Sunday. This puts
Christians at a particular disadvantage as it is common
knowledge that Sunday is a day of worship for
Christians.
DISCRIMINATIONBYASSOCIATION
 If you are treated unfairly because someone you
know or are associated with has a protected
characteristic, this may be construed as
discrimination by association.
 For example – you are refused service in a
restaurant because you are with someone who
belongs to a particular race.
DISCRIMINATION BY PERCEPTION
 Receiving unfair treatment because
someone thinks you belong to a group with
protected characteristics, you may be
experiencing discrimination by perception.
For example – you are belonging to Baloch
tribal but an estate agency refuses to lease
out a flat to you because they assume you are
involve in unwanted activities due to their
misconceptions.
