The preliminary task of creating a college magazine helped the author learn skills that improved their music magazine. Some lessons included using simpler color schemes and layouts, focusing teasers and keeping the front cover clean. The experience with the college magazine also helped the author gain a better understanding of their target audience and how to design magazine pages professionally.

2. What was done before my music
magazine?
Before I started my music magazine I had to do a preliminary task which was to create a
collage magazine for the students in Leyton Sixth Form College. I had to plan how I wanted to
do my front cover and contents page. I had to make the masthead linked to the college so I
picked LCS(short for Leyton Sixth Form College) Update.
The pricing for this magazine was free, this was because it is a college magazine and people
wouldn’t buy it with money because they wouldn’t want to waste £1.00 on a college magazine
so I thought that I’ll make it for free. However, for my music magazine I decided on the pricing
of £2.99 because it is a monthly magazine. For my music magazine the pricing is suitable for
my audience as well because I do know that I have younger audience who may not be able to
afford an expensive magazine.
The age group for my college magazine is for college students so it is ages between 16-19, for
my music magazine it is ages between 16-35 so the age group is different. However, both of
my magazines age audience starts at age 16 so my college magazine helped me to understand
a bit more of what this type of age will ne attracted by.

For my college magazine the colour scheme is
red, yellow, black and blue. These colours are
bright and mainly attractive for younger people.
On the other hand the colour scheme for my
music magazine is black, white, blue and red. For
these colours they are more professional and also
a colour that would attract any age group. The
main model on my college magazine is standing
in a way like she is confused, this links to my main
cover line “will you be happy with your ending?”
For my main model she is standing very serious
and confident which also links with the main
cover line “I can do it better than others” which
shows the confidence and braveness in herself.
The photography for my college magazine is
really unprofessional as it is not in a professional
studio. However, for my music magazine I went
into a studio with a whit backdrop.

For my teasers in my college magazine
they were all around the magazine so it
didn’t look too professional and it was
also to much around the main model so I
learnt for my music magazine I will be
keeping my teasers on one side of my
magazine so people could concentrate
also on my main model on my front
page. On my college magazine the
teasers make it look really crowded and
busy, but on my music magazine it is kept
simple and on one side so it looks neat.

• I have a better masthead which I have created on Illustrator which made my
music magazine look more unique than my college magazine.
• I have a better understanding of colour scheme, making my music magazine
look professional with professional colours. The font style on my music
magazine is much smaller and neat rather than my college magazine which
has a bold front style.
• Better camera with better images.

6. College Magazine vs Music Magazine
For my contents page my college
magazine is very squashed onto one
page. On the other hand my music
magazine is spaced out onto two
pages making it look neat and
professional. My font style on my
college magazine looks very childish
and unnecessary. I have added a
social networks page on my music
magazine which will make It more
attractive for my audience to stay
connected online with my
magazine. The background colour
of my college magazine looks really
unsuitable, but my music magazine
looks suitable with a white
background and an image on the
left side. There is a better use of
layout on my music magazine page.

7. • The task of making a college magazine really helped me to
understand how to use the technologies such as Indesign and
Photoshop, this then helped me with making my music magazine.
The only different technology I used for my music magazine was
Illustrator which was to make my masthead for my music magazine.
