Question 5:
How did you attract/address your audience?
In the Research and Planning stage of our film opening, we decided to interview
people in our target audience. Our target audience is predominantly males over
35, and secondarily all females over 16. This showed us what sort of thing we
needed to aim for. We also interviewed someone outside of our target audience
to see if their answers were generally the same as the others, so if they were, we
could comply with the needs of a general audience.
To do this interview we had to think of some open questions. These were as
follows:
 Name, Age and Occupation?
 What do you enjoy about zombie films and why?
 Is there anything in particular that you think could be added to the
zombie genre?
 Do you think the zombie genre is better as a hybrid or on its own?
 What other genres would you like to see incorporated into the zombie
genre?
 What is your favourite film within the genre?
 What character types would you like to see in zombie films?
 Are there any specific zombie film openings you like and why?
 Are there any out-dated elements in zombie films that you think shouldn’t
be used anymore and why?
 Is there anything you dislike in zombie films?
All the interviewees agreed that having a strong female lead (or multiple, strong
females) is a must and that the females should fight their battles themselves
instead of getting a male to do it for them, most of the interviewees liked the
hybrid genre and in general, all of the answers to the question was fairly similar;
we found that we could make the target audience for the film anyone over
sixteen because everyone agreed on similar answers for each question.
What did you include within your film to excite or intrigue audiences?
We included, in our film opening, a sound effect of a heartbeat. This would keep
the audience fully immersed whilst there were slight gaps in the film. We also
had a female protagonist because with our target audience interviews, they all
said that that was something that they would like to see more of in this genre.
We also used dull filters throughout our film opening to convey what was
happening in the film at that moment and to foreshadow some of the later events
in the film.
