The document discusses the design elements of a magazine called Yoyo aimed at young male readers interested in hip hop, fashion, and social media. It uses a red, black, and white color scheme and images of well-dressed male models to appeal to its target demographic. The magazine includes free music and contests to incentivize purchases. Stories cover topics like crime and wealth that readers aspire to and can connect with the artists as down-to-earth.
1. Colour scheme of black,
white and red so that the
red stands out amongst the
background and rest of
magazine to draw attention
to important parts. Red is
masculine coded so appeals
to men as 89% of Yoyo’s fan
base is male. The red also
connotes being out-there
which is how the readers of
Yoyo will be.
Free mixed CD comes with
the purchase of the
magazine used to persuade
the audience to buy the
magazine as they get
something free with it.
Stories inside the magazine are
to do with things that the
audience likes such as the
accusation of the artist stealing
lyrics; this will interest people
to find out more about what
happened and links in to the
demographic as most rap songs
are about crime.
The chance to win an album is
glowing to stand out amongst
the rest of the front cover. This
is another persuasive method
used to make the reader want
to purchase the magazine.
The costume of the model
follows fashion trends as he
is well-dressed with a
snapback cap, this appeals to
my target audience as the
majority of them are
interested in fashion and
keeping up with trends and
brands as well.
The price of the magazine
(£2.99) is not too expensive for
the younger males in my
demographic, they can afford it
even if they don’t have a job,
but it is not too cheap that it
looks weak and unimportant
among other magazines in the
shop.
Social networking sites have
been used on the front cover
so that the audience can stay
connected online as well as
they spend up to 20 hours a
week online and are frequently
connected through these types
of sites.
2. The stories which are
featured inside the
magazine stand out and
appeal to the audience of
the hip-hop genre as they
involve things that they
are interested in such as
“Rolling in the money”
which is what they aspire
to be.
The models in the
contents page are both
males, this follows the
demographic of the
magazine as 89% of them
are male.
Use of the word
‘Exclusively’ shows that
the content found in this
magazine is trustworthy
and can only be found in
Yoyo magazine, making
the audience want to
purchase the magazine as
it has something that no
other magazine can offer
them.
Yoyo’s website is shown
underneath the title of
the page which will
appeal to the target
audience as they spend a
lot of time on the
internet and can connect
with the magazine
further by going online.
The costume of both
male models is up-to-
date and fashionable,
appealing to the target
audience of the
magazine even further.
3. The use of the long-
shot of the artist that
the article is about
shows that these 2
pages are all about
him and he stands-
out. This is a similar
quality that the
audience I am trying
to target will possess
due to the fact that
they like to be out-
there, prominent,
different and to stand
out.
The word ‘TOP’ is
highlighted in red to
stick to the colour
scheme and to
stand out amongst
the double page
spread. The word
connotes making it
big and getting
somewhere in this
world, which evokes
a sense of envy and
makes the audience
want to emulate
what this person
has done; it is of
interest to the
reader.
The image of the
artist kneeling
down allows the
readers to
connect with him
as it shows he is
down-to-earth
and the fact that
he is at the top of
the page links in
with the word
‘TOP’ on the page
opposite. Showing
that no matter
who the reader is,
they can make it
big as well.The shadow
behind the image
connotes that no
matter what is
behind the artist,
he is moving
forward and the
futures ahead of
him, linking in
with the article of
his journey and
how he made it
big; acting as an
example for the
audience to aspire
to and will appeal
to the target
audience to make
them want to read
on and buy the
magazine.
