Question 2 media evaluation social groups
- 1. Question 2: How does my music magazine represent particular social groups?
- 2. For my magazine I only did one shoot but It included over 100 photos so I could pick and choose what ones I wanted for different parts of the magazine. For the shoot I didn’t have a real band to photograph so I had to make one up. I asked tree of my friends to come out and do a shoot for me. I dressed them basically in what they would normally wear as it is edgy and suits the magazine. So Natasha is wearing tartan leggings, a baggy t-shirt, Dr Martens and her hair in bunches with matching red ribbon. Ellie is wearing a black crop top, black flowing waterfall skirt with patterned tights and black Dr Martens. Jess is wearing blue skinny jeans, a Alice in wonderland theme top, a multi coloured cardigan and her black Dr Martens. Their hair is styled rough and textured and a bit messy with clear make up other than some black eyeliner and red lips. On the cover the girls are posed with Ellie and Jess standing together and Tasha crouched in front of them, I think this gives them the look of power and unites them as a group. Also as there are three of them it creates a better shape rather than them just stood in a line. The different heights lead your eyes around the picture and to different pieces of text on the page.
- 3. My mise-en-scene communicates to the audience that the social group/ band presented are a different, alternative band that not everyone has heard of. They look powerful, inspired and motivated as they are young teens that have come back to reach the top of the charts for a second time running. It also shows that the band are all close friends and comfortable together. I feel that my magazine represents it’s target audience by being bold and different but fresh at the same time. The colour scheme pulls the magazine together and the on location photograph keeps it new and fresh especially it being green foliage. On the contents the band are not posed it was a photo of them in a natural position laughing and joking around, they didn’t know I was taking the picture. At the bottom is another one of them but this is only small as I was advertising a free poster inside. As well as this there is a photo of me at the top, I didn’t want to take any more shoots so I worked with what I had on my phone. This happened to be a selfie (so I did take it myself) but it fitted with my genre and adds another level rather than just photos of ‘The All Seeing’. The double page spread is another photo of the band but this time they are perched in a tree with Jess sat down, Tasha leant on one side and Ellie stood above them.
- 4. Conventions I have complied with conventions of an alternative band by: • using a bold title without a colour block • Staging photos • Creating plugs • Cover lines surrounding the page • Bold plain writing Some things that I have done that an alternative magazine might not is: • A simple clear cover so not cluttered • All colour photos. No black and white photos • Studio photography shoots • Female orientated band not male
- 5. I think the dominant ideas about the ‘alternative’ social group are that they do not like to follow the crowd and enjoy being different but by doing this they get unwanted attention from other people not in their social group. People assume that because they are different they are bad and don’t have a worth while opinion. The dictionary defines alternative as an activity that departs from or challenges traditional forms. So by creating an alternative magazine I would have had to have gone against the norms of say a chat or pop magazine which I believe I have done. I think people would say that my magazine supports dominant ideologies about my social group.
