I lookedatvariousexistingdigipaksandlinkedmusicvideotogainanideaof whatI shouldbe
achievingtoeffectivelycombine myproducts,Ilearntconventions of mygenre soI knew specific
requirementsof howtosucceedincombiningmyproducts.
As well asa musicvideoIhave createdtwoancillaryproducts:a digipakandmagazine advert.
Throughoutmyproducts I useda consistenttheme of ajourney –the narrative of a journeyisshown
throughmy musicvideoandinmy advertand digipakIhave useda map as a backgroundinboth
products.The consistencyof a theme andstyle waseffective asitmade myproducts more
memorable e.gwhenyoulookatmymusicadvertyou are remindedof the journeythatwas
portrayedinmy musicvideodue tothe advertand thisisimportantas the theme promotesall of
the productsevenwhenthe viewerisonlylookingatone product.
I keptinmindbefore creatingmymusicvideoand productsthat I wouldneedtohave a clearlink
betweenall productsinordertosucceedandso I decidedtohave a journeytheme andconformto
my genre – urban pop.My artist Han.a isdownto earthand isfrom southLondondue to thisshe
wore a casual costume code inthe musicvideobutto still conformtothe ‘pop’elementof the genre
I decidedtomake mydigipakandadvertsbackgroundthe conventional colourscheme of pink,even
thoughshe was still wearingcasual clothesinthe albumcover,the pink backgroundcontrastedto
this,so lookingatthisyoucouldargue that the twoelementsclashandtherefore the combinationof
my musicvideo –the casual clothingwiththe pinkbackgroundfrommyadvertand digipakisnotan
effectivecombination,however Ibelieveitwasthe bestoptiontotrulyrepresentthe ‘urbanpop’
genre.
By usingthe same star throughoutmyproductsI gave artistrecognitionandIemphasizedGoodwin’s
‘star persona’theorygivingthe viewersapersonal feel tothe artistastheyreceive alotof different
viewsof the artist.The viewercanfeel close andfamiliartothe artistfromthis.Thisisveryeffective
as the audience will notonlybe able tosee aclear linkbetweenthe productsbutwill alsowantto
lookat the ancillary productsinorderto feel closertothe artist,therefore promotingeachpiece and
encouragingsalesof eachproduct.Furthermore formymagazine advertmyinspirationwas‘Jessie
j’sadvertas she has usedthe same picture as hercd albumcover,andI have done thisin mymusic
advertto conformto genre butthisalso addsa furtherconsistencyandrelationtomyother
products.
For my digipakIkepta consistentcolourscheme of pale pinkandwhite withwhite,blackandblue
typographyandthiswas consistentinmymusicadvertas well byusingaconsistentcolourscheme.
It was importanttomaintainthe colourscheme asit emphasizesthe professional elementsof my
ancillaryproductsinorderfor mymusicvideotobe takingseriouslyinthe viewer’seye.
I have featuredthe same artistthroughoutall products,thisakeyfactor in combiningmyproducts
effectivelyasitmakesa clearlinkto the audience thatthe productsare related.Asthe artistis
consistentlyseeninmycombinationof mymainproducts andancillarytextwithanurbancostume
code,I effectivelymanagedtorepresentthe artist’surbanstyle inrelationtothe urban/popgenre
and therefore herpersonalityenhancedasitis the same throughoutthe products.The constantstar
personashown andartist recognition,makesthe audience feel connectedwiththe artist’s
demographicsconformingtoMaslow’shierarchyof needsintermsof sense of connections.
I couldn’tcompletelygiveconsistencythroughoutmymusicvideoandancillarytextsasthe music
videoisa 3-d piece itwouldhave beenhardtoadd the repeatedelementsinmyancillarytextssuch
as the typographyand backgroundof the map. PerhapsIcouldhave combineditmore effectivelyby
addingan overlayof the maponto my videobutIthinkthat wouldlookvisuallyconfusingandfor
thisreasonI thinkI combinedmyproductsinthe mosteffective wayaddingartistrecognitionand
consistencyfrommytheme.
I believethatmyancillaryproductsreflectthe musicvideo,asmyartisthas a similarmise-enscene
as inthe video.Withthe same hair,make-upandsimilarcostume code,she isalsogazingintothe
camera,whichshe oftendoesthroughoutthe musicvideogivingafurthersense of continuity
throughoutmyproducts.Furthermore,frommyfeedbackof mydigipakandmagazine productand
musicvideo,Iaskeddifferentpeople andeachtime theysaidsomethingtodowithmytheme of
journeyprovingI have effectivelyaddedconsistencycombiningmyproducts.
By combiningthe three Ieffectivelycreatedapersonaandimage of the artistmakingit clearto the
audience whatmygenre isand representingthe artistsbrandimage correctly.If Ihad notcombined
my productseffectivelythere wouldhave beenthe riskthatthe audience didnotunderstandthe
genre.Frommy questionnaire Idiscovered’urbanpop’wasthe mostpopulargenre.Soif the
audience didnotunderstandmyproductstheymayhave notlooked at the products,sothat is why
it isimportantto effectivelycombine products,insuringthe benefitfrommarketingandpromotion
throughthe combinationof the products.
