The document discusses how the media product, a magazine called FORTE, represents particular social groups.
The target demographic is mainly females aged 16-30 who likely have jobs and can afford things like music and festivals. Images on the cover and in the magazine show artists performing live at festivals to attract this casual, carefree audience that enjoys fun pursuits.
Comparisons are made to existing magazine covers targeting folk music fans, showing how FORTE's cover and layouts feature simple backgrounds and poses to reflect the soft, serious side of folk music appealing to young women. The choice of artists like Sacha, with long hair and acoustic instruments, aims to represent and attract this social group of acoustic music fans.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

A Survey of Techniques for Maximizing LLM Performance.pptx
Question 2
1. 2) How does your media product represent
particular social groups?
The demographic for my magazine is mainly females aged from
16-30 years old. It is likely that a large majority of my
target audience have jobs so I think that the issues of my
magazine, for example, Glastonbury and purchasing new music
are suitable because they are likely to be able to afford
these things.
2. My magazine represents the social
groups of my demographic through the
use of props and images. I think
that the whole of my demographic fit
into a casual and laid back social
group. The idea of going to
festivals is very exciting for my
target audience suggesting they’re
carefree and are always seeking fun
things to pursue. Therefore, the use
of images on my front cover showing
artists performing live will attract
them immediately.
All of these images
have been used
throughout my
magazine.
My audience are clearly going to be
fans of the Folk music genre. I
noticed that after completing my
magazine the majority of my images
had guitars in them. This fits into
the social group of my readers
because it is possible that some of
them play an instrument themselves
and the fact that the guitars used
are acoustic, it fits into the
genre.
3. Next, I decided to compare my completed front cover with existing front covers to
see how both attract particular social groups.
I took one of the front covers from my
research posts at the start of my blog
to use as a comparison for FORTE’s
front cover. Laura Marling is the
artist I used as inspiration. In Q’s
issue they would clearly be attracting
folk music fans as Laura is from that
specific genre so I think this cover
was good to base mine on. Alyx is
using a similar stance to Laura with
the look over the shoulder and I have
also noticed that the fonts used to
write the artists’ names are specific
to themselves.
Both of these artists are female and look quite calm and
comfortable in their position of music which I think attracts a
particular social culture of young women who are into the more
softer side of music which folk is a good example of. A
contrast of this would be magazines such as Kerrang! as the
artists on their front covers show attitude and confidence. For
example, I looked back to my research into Kerrang! magazine
and found this front cover featuring All Time Low. They use
more costumes to portray their artists. Therefore, this is why
I didn’t use Kerrang! as a style model because the magazine has
different ambitions to mine.
4. The first image is from the double page spread of Laura’s Q magazine
issue. I have compared this with my double page spread to see how we
have both attracted a particular audience. Both artists have a quite
serious look on their faces and the setting of the shoot is simple.
I also noticed that both Alyx and Laura are crossing their arms on
some form of way which I think reflects the subject matter of the
interview as Alyx’s is about overcoming her anxiety so has been
quite a closed person in the past. I think that this is suitable for
the demographic because they are old enough to understand these
issues and process them therefore the image is reflecting the
seriousness.
5. Laura Marling, an existing folk artist is a great
example of someone who I’d like to represent
through my magazine. This photo is very simple
with a plain background with the guitar and
microphone. Therefore, I decided to use this as
inspiration for an image in my contents page as I
once again used a plain backdrop used the amps
and guitar as props. I felt that Sacha was
perfect for representing this social group of
acoustic music fans as he definitely has the
right casual look due to his appearance. Also, I
think that the positioning of the camera makes a
good effect as both artists are looking away.
This creates some mystery towards the artists as
individuals and therefore could invite a reader
to find out more about them.
Top: Laura Marling Bottom: My Image
I also looked back at my Q
magazine research when analysing
the image of Sacha. The artists on
the front cover of this issue,
Kasabian are clearly quite
different from him because of the
difference in genre however I
noticed that they both have long
hair. I think this reflects a vibe
that males are becoming care free
when it comes to stereotypes. Even
though my target demographic is
mainly females I think that these
images could attract males of the
same appearance to be interested
in finding out more about them.
6. Overall, I think that I have successfully portrayed
different social groups of my demographic via my
magazine by the actual models I have used throughout to
the props used. I think that the target audience I am
aiming at would be satisfied with the contents of the
final product as they would be able to relate to the
issue of Glastonbury festival as they would be fans of
the artists mentioned and they would hopefully be able
to grasp and understand the issues mentioned in the
double page spread.
