Question 2
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
The combination of the main and ancillary texts within the production of ‘TeleSoap’ on reflection has
proved to be very successful in that all the different media platforms are in a symbiotic relationship to
promote a Soap Opera. Both the main and ancillary texts are examples of synergy as the social media
logos are present. The magazine institution, TeleSoap, has joined with the social media networking sites of
Facebook and Twitter in order to successfully promote its contents in order to reach a wider audience
base. In relation to Katz Uses and Gratifications theory of surveillance, information relating to Sunbury
Cross would be made easily accessible as audience members would be kept regularly updated. My
magazine and poster is an example of synergistic material as the poster not only promotes the
programme, but also the magazines facebook page. Ideally, synergy and convergence are essential
techniques in order to strengthen the popularity and accessibility of a product and its creator/institution .
The convergence through the web address’ of (telesoap) and (BBC 3) are also effective in that it increases
audience interactivity. Most particularly, BBC iPlayer is an effective streaming utility that enables audience
members to watch their favourite shows on demand after they have been nationally broadcasted. Within
the POC information, the trailer also aids the cross-promotion of Facebook and Twitter.

areas:
‘Combination’ ‘Effective’ – Examples from EACH product? Key Terminology
Question 2
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
I also feel the main product and the ancillary texts are substantially effective in presenting the social of
issue of a pregnancy which is the focus of the narrative in the trailer. All three products display a
pregnancy test which effectively emphasise the cause of the disequilibrium (Todorov) within the narrative.
The trailer and the magazine front cover combine together in order to formulate and emphasise the
power and authority the female protagonists has over the male who appears vulnerable and weak. In the
trailer she is positioned in front of her two friends which emphasises her ‘leader’ status. Similarly, within
the front cover, she is positioned in front of the male which further illustrates her dominating control of
the situation as she does not show emotion.
Unlike the magazine, the poster also represents the underlying issue of a death in relation to the males
suicidal feelings and actions which are too shown in the climax of the trailer. Therefore, I feel that all three
products effectively entice an audiences interests as with generating a degree of suspense as they all
successfully present a cliff-hanger which is the main purpose of an effective and enthralling Soap Opera
trailer.
