2. HOW DOES YOUR MAGAZINE REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?
Within my college magazine I have represented my target social group quite stereotypically. I
have done this as I believe that it isn’t an offensive stereotype therefore it could attract more
customers to my magazine.
I feel that it’s stereotypical as the articles which I have included on my front cover and
contents page represents what the typical college student may like to read about in a
magazine. The articles about music, technology and gaming are topics that I believe a lot of
my target social group would be interested in, this is slightly stereotypical as not all college
students have certain technology which enables them to be interested in these topics, and
also some have the technology but are just not interested in it.
The font used in the masthead and throughout the contents page represents the magazine
as quite youthful and possibly harder for older people or people with bad eyesight to read as
well, this could limit my audience as within college there are people of all ages not just young
people.
A positive way that I have represented my target social group is with the title of the magazine
‘Voice’. This title gives the impression the youthful audience have a voice within college, this
could show the responsibility that young people have and therefore shows the trust given in
them, and that they are worth that trust.
3. HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS
YOUR AUDIENCE?
My magazine attracts my audience within a college as I feel it has a youthful feeling towards it
which would help to relate to the different social groups around an average college.
One way that I feel represents the youth from the magazine is the models involved on the front
cover and contents page of my college magazine. This represents this particular social group as the
models are the age of the average audience of my magazine, this gives the impression that some of
the audience might have that if the models, which may have similar interests, like the magazine
maybe they would too, which could help to attract more customers.
Another way I tried to make my magazine relate to the main social groups around college, I tried to
use the colours that, the majority of the people who took part in my questionnaire, preferred. I did
this as if potential customers are looking for a magazine to buy, their preferred colours should catch
their eyes which would influence them to take more notice in that particular magazine, therefore
choosing brighter colours on magazine, as chosen by the questionnaire, could help to attract more
of the target social groups to my magazine.
The articles within my magazine represent the target social groups as within my questionnaire I found
out what type of entertainment the potential audience would like therefore they would be more
likely to buy a magazine if the contents appealed to their interests. Also I used certain topics
involved with college therefore the magazine would be an equal mix between ‘work and play’
which I hoped would appeal to the potential audience.
4. WHAT ASPECTS OF YOUR WORK CAN
BE IMPROVED ON AND WHY?
There are a few areas in which I could have improved my magazine to make
it look better compared to other magazine designs that have been
published.
One aspect of my magazine that I believe could be improved is the quality
of the pictures included on my front cover and on my contents page. I feel
this could have been improved as the poses I asked the models to do were
fairly simple and I didn’t really think about how the poses would represent my
magazine, therefore I would change this to make the poses so that the
models stand out on the page.
Another part of my magazine that I would improve is the contents page, I
would improve this by making it stand out by having the background page
stand out more compared to just having it white like it is in my college
magazine. If I was to make it bolder colours I think it would relate more to
youthful audience as they would prefer the bolder colours over the plain
white.
5. WHICH ASPECTS OF YOUR WORK ARE
YOU HAPPY WITH AND WHY?
Within my college magazine there are some areas that I am happy with considering this is the
first time I used a lot of the programmes needed to create this magazine.
Contradictory to the fact I was disappointed with the poses for the photographs I took, I am
happy with my front cover photo as the setting of my photo was really good for my magazine
with the graffiti behind the models linked to my youthful target audience. I am happy with this
because this could help me to attract the audience that I intended to.
Another part of my magazine that I liked was the colour scheme of my writing, bright red for
the consonants and bright blue for the vowels, on my front cover and also my contents page.
I like this as in my questionnaire I found out that my that my target audience preferred
brighter colours, due to this I decided on the red and blue colours and then found out that
they went really well together and made the magazine look quite good and give the
audience what I found out that they want.
I am very happy with my progression while using programmes like Photoshop and InDesign as
I had never used them before. I am happy with this as I have learnt how to change pictures
and the characteristics of the pictures to make them look better than they would otherwise.
Also I am happy with how I’ve learnt how to make a professional looking contents page to go
alongside my front cover.
