Qualitative Survey

Question One
• This question allows us to see
our audiences expectations for
the film and how they felt about
the trailer.
• The responses were mostly
positive which suggests that
our trailer successfully
introduces the film.
• Also, most responses noticed
the tension building throughout
the trailer, presenting an
effective element of our trailer
Question Two
• This shows how the majority have, at
least, a basic understanding of the plot, or
hint towards elements within our plot.
• Most correctly identified the characters,
sometimes using their names, and also
show understanding of their role in the
film i.e. Protagonist/antagonist.
• On the other hand, a few believe that
Hans committed suicide, showing how
our trailer remains ambiguous. However,
some do refer to Rosette as the Black
Widow, presenting how the narrative is
slightly too obvious.
• Furthermore, some believe that Mark is a
policeman or detective as opposed to his
real occupation; a journalist.
Question Three
• Though few correctly referred to
the trailer as noir, many were
close with genres that are similar
to noir, such as crime thriller,
mystery or crime.
• This links to how noir is a niche
genre and an audience are
unlikely to know the terminology.
• One response suggested it was
an action film, which links to the
violent themes of noir but is also
quite different, however
audiences respond to content
differently.
Question Four
• When identifying their favourite
parts, audiences offered a
range of different positives.
• However, the most common
seems to be it's fast pace and
tension. This helps us pinpoint
or positive features as the
editing and the music.
• However, this is subjective and
therefore is just up to personal
taste and prior knowledge
Question Five
• This question is key as it identifies what our
audience think our biggest weakness is.
• The main improvement seems to be the lighting as
multiple response state that some shots are too
dark, this may be due to a lack of knowledge of noir
style, however I think this refers to how much the
audience can see not that the style is too dark.
• Others thought the plot was too obvious, which is
likely true for some as they can predict the ending
due to previous experience, however this is
something subjective and up for interpretation.
• Despite this suggestion, we still have strong
enigmas within the trailer and therefore it still acts
effectively.
• Lastly, is the music, some felt it came in sections
and that the transitions didn't flow well enough. This
is definitely something that we should consider as it
then separates the trailer into scenes, making it
seem linear.
To conclude, we can deduct
from this feedback that:
• The plot is clear
• The genre is communicated effectively
• The music transitions aren't smooth enough
• The acting is questionable
• Some shots are a bit shaky or too dark
