The document argues that the term "quality assurance" (QA) no longer accurately describes the role of testers in an Agile development process. QA implies monitoring and assuring quality from the outside, whereas testers are part of the development team. "Quality assistance" is also problematic as it implies assisting others rather than creating value. The document proposes using "quality intelligence" instead, which better captures how testers acquire and transform product data into useful information for stakeholders. Adopting this new term would help testing roles fully transition to an Agile paradigm.

Metrics have always been used in corporate sectors, primarily as a way to gain insight into what is an otherwise invisible world. Organizations blindly adopt a set of metrics as a way of satisfying some process transparency requirement, rarely applying any statistical or scientific thought behind the measures and metrics they establish and interpret. Many metrics do not represent what people believe they do and as a result can lead to erroneous decisions. Joseph looks at some of the common and some of the humorous testing metrics and determines why they are failures. You must be able to work through major threads without being overwhelmed by tiny details. James Bach describes how test strategy is organized around risk but is not defined before testing begins. Rather, it evolves alongside testing as we learn more about the product. We start with a vague idea of our strategy, organize it quickly, and document as needed in a concise way. In the end, the strategy can be as formal and detailed as you want it to be. In the beginning, though, we start small. If you want to focus on testing and not paperwork, this approach is for you.

When testing a complex system you are often faced with complex test problems. Cause and effect cannot be deduced in advance, only in retrospect.
According to the Cynefin framework, the general approach to tackle complexity is probe-sense-respond. Try something, analyze the outcome, and based on that outcome, try something else. This is the basis of all my approaches to begin unraveling complex test problems. But how do I select my test scope for a specific complex test problem?

If you are part of a development team working on a game, and you are working in some kind of Agile way, you most likely have a bug backlog, or at least bugs as part of some kind of backlog. The bug backlog looks very different during different stages of the game development cycle - it starts out empty, and then as features and complexity is added, it grows. And in most cases it never stops growing.
One of the most important aspects of Quality Intelligence is transparency and visibility. Intelligence is worthless if it does not affect the decision-making process in some way. If the intelligence is not available to the people involved in the decision-making process, then it will have no effect.
Quality Intelligence - what does the term stand for in theory and in practice? This is a follow up to my previous presentation about why I think QI should replace QA as the acronym of choice.
When dealing with complexity you have to be aware of that cause and effect can only be deduced in retrospect. With this in mind, success or failure, is not completely in our hands when we are developing complex products. What is in our hands is the commitment we show, the ownership we take, and the effort we put in. That is what we should celebrate.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.

Online Grocery Store is an e-commerce website, which retails various grocery products. This project provides an easy access to Administrators and Managers to view orders placed using Pay Later and Instant Pay options.
In order to develop an e-commerce website, a number of Technologies must be studied and understood. These include multi-tiered architecture, server and client-side scripting techniques, implementation technologies, programming language (such as PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and MySQL relational databases. This is a project with the objective to develop a basic website where a consumer is provided with a shopping cart website and also to know about the technologies used to develop such a website.

The main processes of the system focus on customer's request where the system is able to search the most appropriate products and deliver it to the customers. 2. Introduction
• “Quality assurance (QA) is a way of preventing mistakes
or defects in manufactured products and avoiding
problems when delivering solutions or services to
customers” [1]
• With the Agile paradigm shift it is time to put this old
acronym to rest, as it no longer accurately describes what
we do or how we relate to our environment
• In this presentation I will explore why we should not use
the QA acronym when talking about testers and test
organizations anymore, and what we should use instead
3. Quality Assurance
• “Software quality assurance (SQA) consists of a means of
monitoring the software engineering processes and
methods used to ensure quality.” [3]
• This definitely does not describe what a tester or a test organization
does
• And even if we disregard all the official definitions of
SQA/QA and just talk about what it has historically meant,
it still does not make sense
• Testers do not assure quality
• Testers are not monitoring the developers’ work
• Testers do not own quality on their own
• Testers are not defenders of quality
• Testers cannot assure quality directly in any way
4. Quality Assistance
• Quality Assistance [2] is a way to make the QA acronym fit
better into an Agile environment
• But just like if you try to adapt waterfall to an Agile environment,
you are just trying to prevent the paradigm shift from happening
• So what is wrong with Quality Assistance in Agile?
• A tester is a part of the development team – they are not an outside
entity that assists the development team
• Quality Assistance does not highlight what value the tester actually
creates – it puts the tester firmly in the passenger seat, only there to
allow someone else to create value
• Quality Assistance allows the tester to feel less ownership as they are
only assisting someone else, and are somehow not accountable
together with the rest of the development team for the final product
5. Business Intelligence
• “Business intelligence (BI) can be described as "a set of
techniques and tools for the acquisition and
transformation of raw data into meaningful and useful
information for business analysis purposes”” [4]
• BI is not called Business Assurance or Business
Assistance for a reason
6. Quality Intelligence
• Quality intelligence (QI) can be described as "a set of
techniques and tools for the acquisition and
transformation of raw product data into meaningful and
useful information for quality analysis purposes
• Why not?
• Isn’t this what testers and test organizations actually do?
Acquire and transform product data into useful information
for our stakeholders?
7. Conclusion
• Quality Assurance is a part of the Waterfall development
process, and if you do not working according to that
process, then you should not call it Quality Assurance
• Quality Assistance is just a way to adapt the acronym to
an Agile environment, and this only hinders us in making
the paradigm shift
• Quality Intelligence much more accurately describes what
we do, and allows us to really start thinking in an Agile
way
