An argumentative essay is an essay that
uses to support the claim it
is making. Its purpose is to persuade the reader
to agree with the argument being made. A
good argumentative essay uses facts and
evidences to support the argument rather than
just the author’s thoughts and opinions.

SCHOOL UNIFORMSHOULD BE MANDATORY
INSCHOOLS
Should wearing school uniform bemandatory?Uniforms are seen almost
anywhereintheworld and are worn for many different reasons.Manyschools
require students to wear school uniform. However, there are also many
schools where students can wear whateverclothing they want. Inmy opinion,
studentsneed towearuniforms.
The title
should
already state
the writer’s
point of
view
In the
introduction, the
writer rewrites the
title as a question
then gives a brief
background of the
topic, summarizes
different opinions
then states his
opinion or point of
view through the
thesis statement.

Students won’t waste their time in the morning
choosing what clothes to wear. Most teenagers really
care about their appearance. Therefore, they spend at
least 20 minutes in the morning deciding what they
should wear in school. For example, a student refuses
to wear the same thing two days in a row to school. As
a result, he is always looking for his closet for
something different to wear. This takes a lot of time. If
you wear a school uniform, you will be wearing the
same thing every day. Students won’t have to worry
and spend needless time choosing clothes.

Wearing a school uniform puts students
in the mood to study. A shirt and tie or a skirt
and white blouse gives a sense of formality to
the classroom. When students wear
inappropriate clothing such as hot pants, short
skirts, oversized jeans or skimpy shirts, a class
can get distracted and not pay attention.
Often, it looks like sudents are going to the
beach and not a math class.

School uniforms create a sense of equality.
Everyone looks the same. Researchers have found that
uniforms lessen emphasis on fashion, reduce the
financial burden of low-income families and promote
peer acceptance, school pride and learning (Lumsden &
Miller,2002). By wearing the same shirt, tie and blazer,
students can feel secure in a learning environment
where their clothing will not be judged or scorned.
Students who wear uniforms feel like they are part of
one group and therefore tend to perform better and care
more about their school.

COUNTER
ARGUMENT
 State the
opposing
view
 Gently refute
(prove wrong
the opposing
view)
Many people think that school uniforms hurt
a student’s individuality. According to them it
interferes with self expression.Requiring uniforms
sends a message that all students are the same. If
schools want students to be themselves, they
should not be forced to dress alike. It’s true that
students express their unique personalities with
their clothes. However, they should not foret that
school is a place to learn, and not a fashion show.
Students can wear what they want on the
weekends or after school.

Saving time, creating an academic
atmosphere and making all students
equal are important reasons to have
school uniforms. It’s a lot easier for the
school and the student to have
uniforms. It’s also a better way for the
children to grow up.
CONCLUSION
 Quick recap of
the topic
 Rephrase and
restate thesis

In more concrete terms, a thesis statement conveys your point of view on your
topic, usually in one sentence toward the end of your introduction paragraph. It’s very
important that you state your point of view in your thesis statement in an
argumentative way—in other words, it should state a point of view that is debatable.
And since your thesis statement is going to present your argument on the topic, it’s
the thing that you’ll spend the rest of your argumentative paper defending. That’s where
persuasion comes in. Your thesis statement tells your reader what your argument is, then
the rest of your essay shows and explains why your argument is logical.
Why does an argumentative essay need a thesis, though? Well, the thesis
statement—the sentence with your main claim—is actually the entire point of an
argumentative essay. If you don’t clearly state an arguable claim at the beginning of your
paper, then it’s not an argumentative essay. No thesis statement = no argumentative
essay. Got it?

Example Thesis Statements
Here are a couple of examples of thesis statements that
aren’t argumentative and thesis statements that are
argumentative
The sky is blue.
The thesis statement above conveys a fact, not a claim,
so it’s not so it’s not argumentative.

To keep the sky blue, governments must pass
clean air legislation and regulate emissions.
What’s the topic in this sentence?
And what position is being conveyed?
Some people would probably respond to that thesis statement with gusto:
―No! Governments should not pass clean air legislation and regulate
emissions! That infringes on my right to pollute the earth!‖ And there you
have it: a thesis statement that presents a clear, debatable position on a
topic.

However, there are also many schools where students can wear whateverclothing they want. Inmy opinion, studentsneed towearuniforms. The title should already state the writer’s point of view In the introduction, the writer rewrites the title as a question then gives a brief background of the topic, summarizes different opinions then states his opinion or point of view through the thesis statement.
  • 15. Project EASIER Efficient and Accessible School Innovation of E-Teaching Resources KABASALAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL Students won’t waste their time in the morning choosing what clothes to wear. Most teenagers really care about their appearance. Therefore, they spend at least 20 minutes in the morning deciding what they should wear in school. For example, a student refuses to wear the same thing two days in a row to school. As a result, he is always looking for his closet for something different to wear. This takes a lot of time. If you wear a school uniform, you will be wearing the same thing every day. Students won’t have to worry and spend needless time choosing clothes. Supporting paragraph 1 • Write your focused topic(topic sentence) • Provide strong supporting facts • Be specific with your evidence and examples
  • 16. Project EASIER Efficient and Accessible School Innovation of E-Teaching Resources KABASALAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL Wearing a school uniform puts students in the mood to study. A shirt and tie or a skirt and white blouse gives a sense of formality to the classroom. When students wear inappropriate clothing such as hot pants, short skirts, oversized jeans or skimpy shirts, a class can get distracted and not pay attention. Often, it looks like sudents are going to the beach and not a math class. Supporting paragraph 2 • Write your focused topic(topic sentence) • Provide strong supporting facts • Be specific with your evidence and examples
  • 17. Project EASIER Efficient and Accessible School Innovation of E-Teaching Resources KABASALAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL School uniforms create a sense of equality. Everyone looks the same. Researchers have found that uniforms lessen emphasis on fashion, reduce the financial burden of low-income families and promote peer acceptance, school pride and learning (Lumsden & Miller,2002). By wearing the same shirt, tie and blazer, students can feel secure in a learning environment where their clothing will not be judged or scorned. Students who wear uniforms feel like they are part of one group and therefore tend to perform better and care more about their school. According to them it interferes with self expression.Requiring uniforms sends a message that all students are the same. If schools want students to be themselves, they should not be forced to dress alike. It’s true that students express their unique personalities with their clothes. However, they should not foret that school is a place to learn, and not a fashion show. Students can wear what they want on the weekends or after school.

It’s a lot easier for the school and the student to have uniforms. It’s also a better way for the children to grow up. CONCLUSION  Quick recap of the topic  Rephrase and restate thesis

  • 21. Project EASIER Efficient and Accessible School Innovation of E-Teaching Resources KABASALAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL In more concrete terms, a thesis statement conveys your point of view on your topic, usually in one sentence toward the end of your introduction paragraph. It’s very important that you state your point of view in your thesis statement in an argumentative way—in other words, it should state a point of view that is debatable. And since your thesis statement is going to present your argument on the topic, it’s the thing that you’ll spend the rest of your argumentative paper defending. That’s where persuasion comes in. Your thesis statement tells your reader what your argument is, then the rest of your essay shows and explains why your argument is logical. Why does an argumentative essay need a thesis, though? Well, the thesis statement—the sentence with your main claim—is actually the entire point of an argumentative essay. If you don’t clearly state an arguable claim at the beginning of your paper, then it’s not an argumentative essay. No thesis statement = no argumentative essay. Got it?

The thesis statement above conveys a fact, not a claim, so it’s not so it’s not argumentative.

What’s the topic in this sentence? And what position is being conveyed? Some people would probably respond to that thesis statement with gusto: ―No! Governments should not pass clean air legislation and regulate emissions! That infringes on my right to pollute the earth!‖ And there you have it: a thesis statement that presents a clear, debatable position on a topic.
