GEOTHERMAL
ENERGY FROM VOLCANO
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
heat or thermal energy that is stored deep
within the earth(core) that originates from the
melted molten rock and the decay of radioactive
substances.
considered high renewable energy source
because the water is replaced by rainfall and
the heat is continuously produced by the earth.
 occurs in the ring of fire zone of pacific
volcanoes
 Philippines is the third largest producer of
geothermal energy in the world.
 Active volcano have high geothermal energy
system. Because the hot molten rock material
located under the earth’s surface may heat the
circulating groundwater.
HOW DOES ENERGY WORK?
Energy is generated by carrying heat
to the surface via fluid circulation
through various types of mechanics.
The main energy transformation
that occur in geothermal power
stations are thermal energy found
in geothermal reservoir converted
to mechanical energy from the
steam towards a turbine and then
to electrical energy by the
generator.
A geothermal power plant uses steam
through a geothermal reservoir. A
geothermal reservoir is an underground
pool of water of hot water found below
the earth’s surface. The geothermal
power plant undergoes a series of steps
to produce electricity for human
consumption.
STEPS TO PRODUCE
ELECTRICITY
1. HEAT FROM THE EARTH’S CRUST
CREATES STEAM
2. STEAM ROTATES TURBINE
3. GENERATOR PRODUCES
ELECTRICITY
4. WATER IS INJECTED BACK INTO THE
GROUND
How does geothermal energy works?
1.Wells are drilled deep into the earth to
pump steam or hot water to the surface
2.When the water reaches the surface, the
drop in pressure causes the hot water to
turn into steam.
3.The steam produced spins the turbine. The
mechanical energy caused by the spinning
of the blades of the turbine is used to spin
magnets and generate an electric current in
the generator.
4.The cooling tower cools the steam which
condenses back to the water.
5.The cooled water is pumped back into the
earth to begin the process again.
TYPES OF GEOTHERMAL POWERPLANT
1. DRY STEAM - IT REQUIRES THE HIGHEST
AMOUNT OF TEMPERATURE
2. FLASH CYCLE - REQUIRES LESS
TEMPERATURE ABOUT 180 C AND UTILIZES
A FLASK TANK
3. BINARY CYCLE - REQUIRES A LOWER
TEMPERATURE THAN FLASH CYCLE
Examples of geothermal power plants in the
country:
 Tiwi geothermal power plant in Tiwi, Albay
 Mak-ban(Makiling banahaw) Geothermal
Power plant in Calawang, Laguna
 Palinpin geothermal power plant in
Valencia, Negros Occidental
 Bac-man (bacon manito) geothermal
power plant in Bacon, Sorsogon
 Mt. Apo geothermal power plant in
Kidapawan City, North Cotabato
Illustrate how does
geothermal energy work.
Write true if the statement is correct and
false if it is not.
1.Geothermal energy is an energy that is
