Geothermal energy harnesses heat from deep within the Earth, believed to come from radioactive elements in the core. It is a limitless alternative energy resource that is exploited through drilling pipes 3 km into geothermal reservoirs, which may contain steam, boiling water, or hot water. There are several types of geothermal power plants that utilize these resources in different ways, such as dry steam plants using steam over 235°C, flash steam plants separating high pressure hot water, and binary plants using lower temperature water to power turbines. The Philippines has become a major producer of geothermal electricity through plants employing these technologies.
