What have you learned from your audience feedback?
“ I think its amazing!” “ Soph this is great, very impressive!” “ Soph this is amazing, by then end of it I really thought she was singing” “ Think the start and the end link really well! I think that the lip sync needs more fire though” “ Good directing, the lip sync is really good, but some parts of the performance are not right” To begin my audience feedback I posted my final video onto Facebook, I asked the audience to comment on what they liked, was the lip sync good and what works well and what doesn’t. Here are the comments I got back:
To gain more useful feedback I also showed my video to a group of my friends who are all interested in the pop genre. By doing this I was able to gain qualitative data, which I can then interpret and evaluate effectively. I played them the video and asked them questions: -do you think that the music video represents the intended gene (pop)? -what message does the video portray to you? -what does the video make you think about? -what is your favourite part? Sophie -yes, the video is really good and similar to other artists in the charts right now. -to me the message is about a relationship breakup and how the other person does not care. -I don’t think it really makes me think about anything important, only things like fashion- like the shoes she is wearing are really nice! I suppose it makes me think that her boyfriend is treating her badly from the beginning when she is trying to get hold of him. -I don’t have 1 main favourite part but I really love it when the camera is close to her face, I also love her make up and hair when its close too. I also really like how she stands out in the streets. Becca -I think its just like a real music video! -I think that it tells me that boys are idiots! And that she is upset? Or she is strong? And over it! -it makes me think that she is angry and upset with someone and that she is trying to figure out what to do -my favourite part is when she steps out the car and you can see her shoes in time with the beat. Alex -yeah its really cool! I can imagine it being a real video in the charts! -I think the main message is about a relationship breakdown but I also think the video is trying to sell her as a brand, like her clothes etc. -it makes me think about how you fell when someone treats you badly. -probably has to be when she is wearing the furry hood and she looks into the camera I love it because she is looking straight at me and this makes me want to watch the rest of the video.
Styling influences From my audience feedback it was clear to me that in music videos fashion and styling play a huge part in influencing the audience. These shots have had a direct effect on my audience by connecting with them through style, the audience can relate to her because she looks attractive and stylish. From this I have learnt that something simple like make-up is still an extremely vital aspect of a music video- if the artist was unattractive then the target audience would not appreciate and relate to the video.
Mise en scene The hypodermic theory can be applied when evaluating my audience feedback- all the comments show that the message was directly received and accepted. For example when considering mise en scene the message was that an old location should in theory make the artist stand out because they are young , new and fresh- comments such as “ I also really like how she stands out in the streets.” show this. This can also be evaluated by David Morley's theory of ‘reading positions’- The audience In this case has taken the preferred reading- e.g. the video is about relationships, fashion and males “ it makes me think that she is angry and upset with someone and that she is trying to figure out what to do” “ to me the message is about a relationship breakup and how the other person does not care” “ I think the main message is about a relationship breakdown but I also think the video is trying to sell her as a brand, like her clothes etc.” From this I have learnt that the media can influence and send messages to its intended audience and possibly change there views.
Cultural Capital Pierre Bourdieu argued that different social groups develop different types of cultural capital depending on there class, experience and education. Therefore my audiences cultural capital will in informed through reading magazines, there friends, fashion etc. So when understanding my music video this would influence how they would interpret the meanings. “ I don’t think it really makes me think about anything important, only things like fashion- like the shoes she is wearing are really nice! I suppose it makes me think that her boyfriend is treating her badly from the beginning when she is trying to get hold of him.” Soph’s cultural capital comes from reading magazines- which I know she does on a weekly basis, she is fashionable meaning that when watching the video she is interested in the fashion. This medium close up is the type of shot intended to attract individuals such as soph because it shows the clothes she is wearing etc. From this I have learnt it is important to understand your intended audiences cultural capital.
What do my audience get out of watching my music video? The pleasures being offered to my audience is the glamour of the model this is pleasing to them because they are watching something pleasing to the eye which makes them feel good about themselves and there interests. The music and the beat compliment each other and this was recognised in the feedback- “ my favourite part is when she steps out the car and you can see her shoes in time with the beat” Another pleasure that they get is that they can relate to being upset with their boyfriend, this makes them feel better about what they maybe going through- knowing that others also go through the same feelings. This extreme close up of the mobile phone shows the relationship between what the artist in the video is feeling to what the song is about. The text saying “where are you” is something that the audience can relate to when thinking about there boyfriends and when they have treated them badly. “ I think that it tells me that boys are idiots! And that she is upset? Or she is strong? And over it!”
Would I alter my work? After gaining useful feedback I think if I was to change my music video I would include a male actor. By doing this I could reinforce the intended meaning of her relationship break up and that as the song goes on she becomes stronger and believes she is better without him. I would include him at the beginning when she is sitting in the car. I would edit the video to cut to him sat in his flat ignoring his phone calls and text messages, I would also consider including him at the end. As the camera cuts back to reality (in the car) he could answer his phone but by this point she has already forgotten about him and she drives off. I think my audience would enjoy this because its showing the female as a strong individual.
