STYLES OF THE 20TH
CENTURY
ELECTRONIC MUSIC
✔Music that uses the tape recorder is called “musique concrete” or
“concrete music”.
✔The sounds are arranged by the composers in different ways, for
example by playing the tape recorder in its fastest mode or in
reverse.
✔In musique concrete, the composer is able to experiment with
different sounds that cannot be produced by irregular musical
instruments (piano or violin).
Edgar Varese (1883-1965)
✔Was born on Dec. 22, 1883, France.
✔He was considered an “innovative French-born
composer”.
✔His compositions are characterized by an emphasis on
TIMBRE and RHYTHM.
✔He invented the term “Organized Sound”
✔Called the “Father of Electronic Music”
Karlheinz Stockhausen
(1928)
✔Born on 1928 in Cologne, Germany.
✔He is a central figure in the realm of Electronic music.
✔Stockhausen’s music was initially met with resistance
due to heavily atonal content.
✔Still he continued to experiment with “musique concrete”
CHANCE MUSIC
✔“aleatoric”, Refers to the style in which the piece sounds
different at every performance.
✔Most of the sounds emanate from the surroundings both
natural and man-made.
✔Combination of external sounds cannot be duplicated as
each happens by chance.
John Cage (1912-1992)
✔Was born on Sept. 5, 1912 in LA California, USA.
✔One of the 20th century composers with the widest array of
sounds in his works.
✔He challenge the very idea of music by manipulating
musical instruments to achieve new sounds – Chance
music.
✔Became famous for his composition “Four Minutes and 33
Seconds, a chance musical work.
