ELECTRONIC
MUSIC
 Electronic music, any music involving
electronic processing, such as recording and
editing on tape, and whose reproduction
involves the use of loudspeakers.
 It is usually operated with a keyboard. It
creates sound electronically using something
called an oscillator. Oscillators vibrate in a
steady way, creating a musical note at a
constant pitch. When it was invented, this
technology allowed musicians to create
sounds which weren't possible on traditional
ELECTRONIC MUSIC
 Music that uses tape recorder is called
Musique concrete or concrete music.
 In music concrete, the composer is able to
expirement with different sounds that cannot
be produced by regular musical instruments
such as the piano or violin.

Edgar Varese (1883-
1965)
Was born on Dec. 22, 1883, France.
He was considered an “innovative
French-born composer”.
His compositions are characterized by
an emphasis on TIMBRE and RHYTHM.
He invented the term “Organized
Sound”
Called the “Father of Electronic Music”
Karlheinz Stockhausen
(1928)
Born on 1928 in Cologne, Germany.
He is a central figure in the realm of
Electronic music.
Stockhausen’s music was initially met
with resistance due to heavily atonal
content.
Still he continued to experiment with
“musique concrete”

CHANCE MUSIC
“aleatoric”, Refers to the style in which
the piece sounds different at every
performance.
Most of the sounds emanate from the
surroundings both natural and man-made.
Combination of external sounds cannot
be duplicated as each happens by
chance.
John Cage (1912-1992)
Was born on Sept. 5, 1912 in LA California,
USA.
One of the 20th century composers with the
widest array of sounds in his works.
He challenge the very idea of music by
manipulating musical instruments to achieve
new sounds – Chance music.
Became famous for his composition “Four
Minutes and 33 Seconds, a chance musical
work.
It’s Showtime!
• The class will be divided into 4 groups.
• Each group will create an original 2-minute performance of
Chance music or Electronic music to perform in class. Choose
one only.
• Each group may use the devices they’ve brought earlier for
electronic music to record (preferably cellphones with any
music apps) while for Chance music they may use any
equipment to use in producing sounds accompanying their
choice of song. Be creative.
• Have a name of your group for the presentation.
• The teacher will select a group to win “BEST PERFORMANCE”
award.
