NEOCLASSICISM
❑Neoclassicism in music was a twentieth-
century trend, particularly current in the
interwar period, in which composers
sought to return to aesthetic precepts
associated with the broadly defined
concept of "classicism", namely order,
balance, clarity, economy, and emotional
restraint.
NEOCLASSICISM
• Neoclassicism is characterized by clarity of form,
sober colors, shallow space, strong horizontal and
verticals that render that subject matter timeless
(instead of temporal as in the dynamic Baroque
works), and classical subject matter (or classicizing
contemporary subject matter).
• It is a partial return to a classical form of writing music
with carefully modulated dissonances.
• It made use of a freer seven-note diatonic scale.
AVANT-GARDE
❑ Avant-garde music is music that is considered
to be at the forefront of innovation in its field,
with the term "avant-garde" implying a critique
of existing aesthetic conventions, rejection of
the status quo in favor of unique or original
elements, and the idea of deliberately
challenging or alienating audiences.
The AVANT-GARDE
❑ is associated with electronic music of
sound in space.
❑ use of variations of self-contained note
groups to change musical continuity and
improvisation.
❑ Absence of traditional rules on harmony,
melody and rhythm.
MODERN NATIONALISM
As a musical movement, nationalism emerged
early in the 19th century in connection with
political independence movements, and was
characterized by an emphasis on national
musical elements such as the use of folk songs,
folk dances or rhythms, or on the adoption of
nationalist subjects for operas, symphonic
poems
MODERN NATIONALISM
❑ A looser form of 20th century music
development that focused on nationalist
composer.
❑ It combines modern techniques and folk
materials.

NEOCLASSICISM ❑Neoclassicism in music was a twentieth- century trend, particularly current in the interwar period, in which composers sought to return to aesthetic precepts associated with the broadly defined concept of "classicism", namely order, balance, clarity, economy, and emotional restraint.
  • 7. NEOCLASSICISM • Neoclassicism is characterized by clarity of form, sober colors, shallow space, strong horizontal and verticals that render that subject matter timeless (instead of temporal as in the dynamic Baroque works), and classical subject matter (or classicizing contemporary subject matter). • It is a partial return to a classical form of writing music with carefully modulated dissonances. • It made use of a freer seven-note diatonic scale.

AVANT-GARDE ❑ Avant-garde music is music that is considered to be at the forefront of innovation in its field, with the term "avant-garde" implying a critique of existing aesthetic conventions, rejection of the status quo in favor of unique or original elements, and the idea of deliberately challenging or alienating audiences.
  • 9. The AVANT-GARDE ❑ is associated with electronic music of sound in space. ❑ use of variations of self-contained note groups to change musical continuity and improvisation. ❑ Absence of traditional rules on harmony, melody and rhythm.

MODERN NATIONALISM As a musical movement, nationalism emerged early in the 19th century in connection with political independence movements, and was characterized by an emphasis on national musical elements such as the use of folk songs, folk dances or rhythms, or on the adoption of nationalist subjects for operas, symphonic poems
