Review of Army of Shadows Essay
In Army of Shadows (2008), Hillel Cohen reexamines the typical historical narratives about
Palestinian perspectives prior to the Nakba. Much of the discussion pertains to the changes that took
place within the mindsets of numerous groups of Palestinians during the British Mandate. It could be
beneficial to compare the approach and methodologies of Hillel Cohen s book to Ilan Pappe s The
Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine (2006) and his reassessment of Israel s historical memory. Pappe
focuses on the planning and actions that were taken to ensure an ethnically cleansed Israel and places
this in direct contrast with current perspectives of historical rhetoric. Both authors draw from a variety
of sources in order to adequately examine the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the more important aspects of nationalism in the 1920s was how Arabic newspapers were used
to define notions of treason. Cohen assesses how one is determined to be a traitor, whether through
absentee land sales or contributions to Zionist intelligence organizations, and how this leads to violent
repression of all varieties of treason. It is interesting to note that although nationalism was becoming
rooted within Palestinian society, the notion of treason was not wholly accepted. Widespread concepts
of nationalism did not become the principal component in the basket of identities of each individual
and the one for which he is willing to kill and be killed but instead, in the 1920s, setup the
mechanisms that helped to achieve this goal: establishment of nationalist norms, coercion, and reward.
The press, the religious system..., and the educational system served as central tools to setup the
negative and positive influences into the norms of nationalism. This in turn led to the concepts of who
is a traitor and who is not. As nationalism comes into its own by the riots of 1936, the definition of
who are traitors or collaborators began to take a more specific role. Whether they were opportunists,
village leaders, patriots, or moralists, all found themselves at odds with the rising forms of
nationalism. Common responses within the Palestinian narrative

What Does My Last Duchess Represent
The Blue Blood s Last Drop In the olden times, tendentious division was abundant between the
aristocrats and the proletariats. Noblemen innately blossomed wealthier than commoners this
presumably caused heightened power and strength regarding the noblemen s virtues in life. My Last
Duchess by Robert Browning precisely portrays an aristocrat through a character of a Duke. The poem
is intense, bitter and violent considering the Duke consistently expresses his insanity being used
against his former Duchess. Browning is renowned for his use of dark humor in his dramatic
monologues. This poem is an excellent example of a dramatic monologue that relates to Browning s
main purpose in writing to explore the heart, mind and spirit of his characters. ... Show more content

The Duke, the speaker in his poem, is portrayed as a jealous, manipulative and controlling husband.
He unveils the portrait of his late wife and speaks about how she was extraordinary which caused his
jealousy, and later on, led to his insanity. Nonetheless, his former duchess is consistently described as
someone who is full of love beauty, innocence, grace and love. They developed a diminutive bond
which was promptly failed by the trials caused by their differences. This poem is one of Browning s
masterpieces as he immensely provides such striking word and sentence arrangements to emphasize
the poem s narrative it gives readers intensified feelings and heightened

The Influence of Jerry Garcia on American History
The Influence of Jerry Garcia on American History The vocalist and guitarist of the Grateful Dead,
Jerry Garcia was one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century, impacting both the
musical and cultural realms. Jerry Garcia was fated to become one of America s most influential
people ever since he was born into Jose Garcia s household. During his childhood, Jerry Garcia lived
in an environment that fueled his musical development and experienced many events that pushed him
closer changing the path of American music and culture. Jerry Garcia was a member of the American
1960 s counterculture and really embodied the ideals and goals of the group as a whole. Thanks to the

Jerry was not only interested in musical arts but he also drew and painted often and enrolled in the San
Francisco Art Institute to study and practice the visual arts. For his fifteenth birthday, Jerry Garcia
received an electric guitar, his favorite instrument so far; by this time, Jerry was already playing the
banjo and the piano. Soon after, Jerry joined his first band, the Chords, solidifying his destiny as a
musician. Jerry Garcia s most obvious influences deal with music and the modern pop music band s
role. He has changed the way music is produced, the way music relates to its listeners, and how the
band interacts with its fans. Jerry Garcia was the renaissance man of the 1960 s singing, writing, and
playing many instruments including the acoustic, bass, and electric guitars, the banjo, and the piano,
which was a revolutionary idea for the time. He and the Grateful Dead worked to successfully enable
the elimination of a record company in the music world. Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead all
worked together blending different musical genres to create new styles of music that will continue into
modern day. Jerry Garcia is largely responsible for the revolution in the identity of the music artist, for
the increase in popularity of the live album, for the divergence of many musicians from record
companies, and for the changes in bands touring style and interaction with their

The Eruption Of The Hawaiian Volcano
The Hawaiian volcano is a shield volcano; they are the oldest continental regions of earth. They may
even be the remains of ancient shield volcanoes. A shield volcano is tall and broad with flat, rounded
shape. The Hawaiian volcanoes are built by countless outpourings of lava that advance great distances
from a central summit vent or a group of vents. Extensive study of the Hawaiian Islands revealed that
they are constructed of a myriad of thin basaltic lava flows averaging a few meters thick intermixed
with relatively minor amounts of pyroclastic ejected material. During eruptions these outpourings help
keep these volcanoes safe. When these volcanoes erupt lava fountains out form the volcano and is hot
liquid lava is thrown into the air but usually not very high. The lava normally flows easily, and does
not explode. These volcanoes also only explode if water some how gets into the vent. Mount St.
Helens is composite volcano, which are also known as strato volcanoes. They are tall, symmetrically
shaped, with steep sides, sometimes rising 10,000 feet high. They are built of alternating layers of lava
flows, volcanic ash, and cinders. The large and generally cone shaped volcanoes form along plate
boundaries called subduction zones where one of the earths plates melts as it falls back into the earth`s
mantle. The eruptions are called explosive, and effusive, because vast amounts of gasses are thrown
into the atmosphere, and the lava explodes and is vicious. A shield

Twelve Angry Men Essay
Twelve Angry Men is a very interesting play about an unfortunate young man, who was convicted of
killing his dad. The worst part was, the young man was only nineteen, and his life was just starting.
The jurors listened to all the evidence, then came the hard part, making the decision: guilty, or
innocent. Eleven jurors said guilty and only one said innocent. There was a lot of peer pressure
involved. I decided to write about different peer pressures three of the jurors used.
The three jurors I picked are juror #10, juror #7, and juror #8.The first juror I want to write about is
#10. Juror #10 was using a lot of sarcasm, whenever he was trying to prove his point, or prove
someone else wrong. I think that this method of peer pressure is ... Show more content on

Although a lot of evidence was really convincing, he tried to prove it unconvincing and use sarcasm to
convince other jurors otherwise. One example of #7 using sarcasm would be this quote: quot; Why don
t we have them run the trial over... quot; I think this quote clearly shows that juror #7 is trying to
convince other jurors, that court s evidence proves the young man is guilty without reasonable doubt.
Also to break #8 s spirit he used name calling, another kind of peer pressure. I believe this is a very
good example: quot; The boy is guilty pal, like the nose on your face. quot; The third and last juror I
picked was #8, he was not using sarcasm, nor was he muscle flexing, he was using reasonable
argument, which helped him convince all the jurors that the young man was innocent. He did not try
to convince anybody by screaming at him, on the contrary he tried to go over all the evidence, and he
was using intelligent thinking, like trying to calculate exact times, and figure out the correct position
of the switch blade in the chest of the father. He was also trying to recreate a situation to see if indeed
one of the witnesses on the stand was lying.
Quotes like this one convinced me that #8 was very wise and intelligent person: quot;If he heard

Edgar Degas helped to found and develop the Impressionist...
Edgar Degas helped to found and develop the Impressionist group of artist and their exhibitions.
Though he helped to develop the group of Impressionist, he did not consider himself one; he referred
to himself as a Realist or an independent artist. Degas preferred to paint scenes that were indoors and
lit by artificial light rather than outdoor naturally light scenes. He used many different medium when
making his art such as oil paints, bronze sculptures, engravings, photos, and sketches with pencil and
pastels. Degas began his study of art by copying Italian Renaissance paintings that he saw in the
Louvre. In 1850s, a tip that he took to Italy influenced him where he was many paintings and frescos

They were both influenced by the world that was around them; they often used theatrical dancers and
prostitutes for inspiration and subjects. Like Degas, Toulouse Lautrec was also strongly influenced by
Japanese prints; he used the layout and formatting of the ukiyo e prints in his own prints. Toulouse
Lautrec mimicked many of the lines and areas of flat color of ukiyo e prints in his prints (3). Degas
did not focus on having solid lines; he would use many shorter lines to created contours that have
more depth to them rather than continual flowing lines. His lines alone are not important, what is
important is the shading that adds the dimension and tonal value to a piece. He is less interested in the
contours and more interested in the way that the shadows create a more three dimensional space. His
interest in shadows is seen in his use of pastels where the contours become the colored shading. When
creating a composition Degas does not use classical centralized contained compositions, he often has
partial figures that are cut off by the edge of the canvas and the center of the composition often
contains unimportant information such as a doorframe or the edge of a table (4 absinth drinker). Many
of the compositions that he creates are a study of movement; Degas is less interested in creating a
story. Toulouse Lautrec is most well known for many of his lithographs; in these lithographs, he uses
specific lines to create simple suggestions of figures and

Cleveland Bay is a shallow bay adjacent to Townsville, north Queensland. The Bay is in the dry
tropics and experiences a wet summer season (December April) and winter dry season (May
November). During the wet season (with an average annual rainfall of 1120 mm), a high flow of water
and sediment are deposited into the Bay. The decreasing salinity, and increasing turbidity creates an
anoxic environment for inshore species (Petus et al. 2014). Regular deposition of fresh water and
sediments are sourced from the three rivers and three creeks; the Black, Bohle and Ross river, and
Sand fly, Alligator and Crocodile creeks. To the northeast of the Bay is the Coral Sea, on its northwest

Guilt In Little Bee By Chris Cleave
The Power of Guilt Everyone has felt a deep sense of regret, this is also known as guilt. The affects of
guilt varies depending on the person who is affected by the feeling and how they cope with their guilt.
Guilt is a very common feeling that can tremendously affect a person. In the novel Little Bee by Chris
Cleave, many incidents occur which reveal various examples of the possible outcomes guilt can have
on a person. Two outcomes of guilt in this novel involve negative and positive consequences. There
has been an incident in my life which also has had a negative as well as a positive outcome. Not only
can the feeling of guilt inspire one in a negative manner, but also in a positive manner. Most often,
guilt leads people towards a negative ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Lawrence and Little Bee converse alone for the first time, Little Bee tells Lawrence that she is
only staying here to help her (Sarah) (pg 185). At first, one would believe that Little Bee went to Sarah
s house because Sarah saves Little Bee s life and so Little Bee feels gratitude towards her. Also, Sarah
is the only person she had contact with in Britain. However, if one allows themselves to increase their
analytical thinking, they are able to discover Little Bee s reason, after leaving Andrew dead, as to why
she wants to stay at Sarah s house . The real reason, as one would discover, is that Little Bee wants to
take care of Sarah and her son, Charlie. Little Bee leaves Andrew hanging in the air in the fear that if
she did call for help from the neighbours, the police would come and take her back to Nigeria. Little
Bee could have ran away and left to go to a different place after witnessing Andrew s death but she
stayed because she felt a responsibility as a result of the guilt towards Andrew s family. Therefore, she
decides to stay in the house and provide the care and the love Andrew would have wanted to provide
them. Referring back to my story, the guilt I felt had also led me to a positive path. A while after my

The Washington Post By Alfonzo Porter
Technology has the power to change and alter the way we live our lives in many ways that most of us
do not even realize it. As the years go by, modern technology has created countless opportunities with
endless resources. These resources can be accessed by billions of people worldwide. However, some
may wonder what changes technology has made, and have these changes improved or damaged our
lives? Many authors and publishers have pondered this and publicly expressed their own perspectives
over the issue of modern technology. Alfonzo Porter, a publisher for The Washington Post, is a strong
believer that technology has caused massive problems when it comes to educating students. The
publisher mentions that student are losing interest in school and becoming more distracted with their
cellular devices. In the newspaper, Porter writes, 76 percent of teachers believed students are being
conditioned by the internet to find quick answers, leading to a loss of concentration. Alfonzo Porter
believes that students are not taking advantage of technology, instead, they are manipulating it. In
today s modern society, there is a higher percentage of students using their cellphones to find answers,
compared to students that are properly reading a book to find solutions to their problems. This issue is
leading students becoming less interested in expanding their knowledge.
Another publisher, named Frederic G. Reamer, is a supporter of the negative effects technology have

Strategy #2 seems to be too risky for a company who saw a major decrease in cash on hand from 08 to
09 (see Appendix B), and Strategy #1 will most likely dilute DF s brand identity within the snack
industry. Diamond s stock price has been strong, but has not shown significant growth since the
acquisition of Pop Secret in September 2008 (see Appendix C). Until this acquisition shows a better
translation into shareholder value, Diamond must focus its efforts on its current products and organic
growth.
Conclusion
Even though Strategies #1 amp; #2 do hold the potential for greater growth in the short term, Diamond
must focus on Strategy #3 to keep its long term vision alive. Once the company is in a better place
financially, has increased its market share with its new products, and has shown it can translate these
objectives into greater shareholder value, Diamond should then focus its efforts on potential
acquisitions. Until then, the company should keep with its current business model and grow a more
solid foundation on which to build.

Apathy To Empathy
Moving from Apathy to Empathy
Apathy in general, is defined as: indifference, lack of interest, or concern for others. More specifically,
the dis ability to identify with others or feel their pain is the primary nature of those who are strong on
apathy.
Empathy, in contrast, is defined as having compassion and sympathy towards others to the extent of
being able to relate with them and their pains. Empathy is, also the ability to understand or feel what
the other person is experiencing or going through. It is the ability to step into the shoes of another
person, with the aim to understand their feelings and perspectives, and then to use that understanding
to guide our actions. That differentiates it from kindness or pity. Additionally, empathy ... Show more

We all usually have assumptions about others. That prevents us from appreciating their individuality.
We need to shelve our assumptions and accept the differences.
Thirdly, we can expand our empathy by gaining direct experience of other people s lives, putting into
practice the proverb: Walk a mile in another man s shoes, before you criticise him .
There are two more traits required for being an empathic person. One of them is, to master the art of
listening. It is essential, that we have the ability to listen to what is really going on within the other
person, and to the unique feelings and needs the other person is experiencing in that very moment. An
empathic person will listen hard to others and do all he can to grasp their emotional state and needs.
When it comes to listening, it is quite important to look and grasp even the non verbal cues that will
enable us to truly understand other person s emotional state of mind. It indirectly initiates an
introspection to question our own thoughts, beliefs and actions. This will enable us to take steps
towards building better

My College Life In High School
I am an international student and last year I was invited by my high school to do a sharing about my
college life in the United States. I am getting everything I want, with the help of my family I started
the sharing by this sentence. After a deep breath, I began my story.
Two years ago, I just graduated from my high school in my home country, thinking that I could get
into one of my dream schools in the United States and enjoy my fantastic 4 year college life. Since my
GPA in high school was pretty high, I expected that all universities would like to accept students like
me. I started applying for a couple of schools that I was very interested in, but did not receive any
good news. Knowing all my friends had got their acceptance letters, I felt inferior and began to
complain about my family s social and financial status. I complained about why my family could not
afford me to go to a high school in the States so that I could have more chances to get into universities
that I wanted. Another reason why I was so anxious was that I did not apply for any schools in my
home country, so I had to take one gap year in the worst case. I did not want to do so because I
thought everyone would feel disappointed in me and perhaps looked down on me. Unfortunately, I
was rejected by all my dream schools. At that moment, I was extremely frustrated; I lost my
confidence, I lost my hope, I could not see the road ahead of me. Then, I had depression.
I reduced my volume gradually and the

Racial Inequalities
Inequalities Between Whites and African Americans In order for us to work towards a more racially
equal society, we need to know what type of social policies contribute to racial inequalities. Then, we
need to either change those social policies or get rid of them completely. Rothstein focuses mainly on
housing policies, which segregated African Americans from whites. Those social policies did not only
constraint African Americans from buying a house in neighborhoods predominantly white, but it
limited their accessibility to other important resources and services such as employment and
education. This is very similar to today s racial inequalities. According to Rohstein, ... St. Louis was
segregated by interlocking and racially explicit public policies of zoning, public housing, and
suburban finance, and by publicly endorsed segregation policies of the real estate, banking, and
insurance industries (30). Real estate agents and banks contributed to this segregation between whites
and African Americans. As soon as African Americans moved to a predominantly white neighborhood,
whites would pack their things and leave. According to Rothstein, Once [a black family] moved in and
was visible, real estate agents solicited nearby homeowners to sell quickly before an imminent influx
of black buyers caused their homes to lose value (25). This is one of the techniques that real estate
agents used to maintain whites and African Americans segregated. Real estate agents and mortgage

In 1871, the tradition of choosing Queen of Mardi Gras was determined by who drew the prize within
the cake. Today, such a find is still deemed to be a sign of good luck and it customary for the person
who discovers the hidden plastic baby to host the next party. In the past such things as coins, beans,
pecans, or peas were also hidden in each King Cake. In the early 19th century, the public celebration
of Mardi Gras consisted mainly of maskers on foot, in carriages and on horseback. In 1837, a
costumed group of revealers walked in the first documented parade , but the violent behavior of
maskers during the next two decades caused the press to call for an end to Mardi Gras. Fortunately, six
New Orleanains who were former members of the Cowbellions, a group that presented New Years Eve
parades in Mobile, AL, saved the New Orleans Mardi Gras by forming the Comus organization in
1857. The men beautified the celebration and proved that it could be enjoyed in a safe manner. Comus
coined the word Krewe and established several Mardi Gras traditions by forming a secret

Other Side to Drop Outs
Dropping out of high school is associated with multiple factors that gradually build onto an individual.
In the Income Inequality, Social Mobility and the Decision to Drop Out of High School study,
Kearney and Levine discussed that the socioeconomic perspective of a person is one that plays a
critical role in his/her perspective in continuing an education. Regions with a greater difference in
income inequality often come with less social mobility. High school students choice to drop out is
often linked with a long term exposure to low socioeconomic circumstance that demotivated their
prospect toward advancement and failure to recognize the benefits ... Show more content on

In a state with a greater gap in income inequality, youths of low socioeconomic status would have had
a 30% lower income in their career compared to that of youths of the same status from states with less
inequality. Likewise, individual in the former had a 8% chance of returning to school whereas there
was a 10.6% with the latter (Kearney Levine, 2016, pp. 347). Failing to identify role models in low
socioeconomic communities can cause one to fail to identify with college. However, one could also be
demotivated by living close to a household of higher socioeconomic status (Kearney Levine, 2016, pp.
348 349). It makes the prospect on financial success seem comparatively unreachable. With lower
obvious income inequality, there is a greater motivation to strive in education because one can feel
more competitive with colleagues whose capabilities are not so superior to oneself. Ultimately,
striving to achieve success through education was, as the researchers mentioned, most appropriately
considered a cumulative measure of ability, reflecting innate endowments, environmental influences,
and the result of formal and informal human capital investment (Kearney Levine, 2016). If an
individual cannot overcome the obstacles that are cast by

Soviet Expansion Into Eastern Europe
Security has been disputed to be another driving factor, and possibly the main factor to the cause of
the cold war as it is interlinked both with ideology and the nuclear race. For instance, ideology and
security both influenced the same event, which in this case was the creation of the Eastern bloc.
(Heywood, 2014) stated that Soviet expansion into Eastern Europe was seen as defensive rather than
aggressive , motivated essentially by a buffer zone desire. Security was an important factor because
the Soviets believed that by having the eastern bloc, they would be protected from Germany as they
had been invaded twice since 1917. Stalin wanted to ensure that future attacks will not happen again.
(Daddow, 2013) highlights how states are primarily concerned with their own survival and therefore
prioritise military and security concerns . As a result this factor has great importance because it
highlights how misperceptions about the soviets desire to protect itself from future invasion had led to
several missed chances of peace. (Heywood, 2014) shows how the US was concerned that the creation
of a soviet bloc was an expression of Russian imperial ambitions.
Robert Jervis in Security dilemma states that states can neither neglect the possibility that others will
become aggressive in the future nor credibly guarantee that they themselves remain peaceful . He
argued that although other motives such as greed, glory and honour come into play, much of
international politics is

A Worn Path Hero s Journey Essay
Journey of Lost Purpose A hero s journey, in a basic sense, involves a hero leaving their ordinary
world to embark on an adventure that is filled with trials and complications. After enduring the bumps
in the road, the hero is rewarded with a prize or elixir that benefits the people from their original
homeland. Screenwriter Chrisopher Volger states, The Elixir may even have the power to restore life
in the Ordinary World (Volger 220) which indicates the journey essentially has a purpose to it. This
typical framework of the hero s journey does not fit into the complexion of Eudora Welty s A Worn
Path . The protagonist, hero, Phoenix Jackson journeys away from home and faces several challenges
along the way, but when she finally gets the elixir, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Simply describing the physical characteristics of the scarecrow she mistakes as a ghost does not fully
lead the reader to believe that it pertains to the incompletion of Phoenix s journey, but the way she
reacts to it certainly does. Phoenix reacts to the ghostly scarecrow by saying, Ghost... who be you the
ghost of? For I have heard of a nary death close by (Welty 93). By having Phoenix relate the
scarecrow to the ghost of someone from around the area, Welty leads the reader to infer that Phoenix
is trying to deny the apparition is her grandson that died close by at home. Dr. Christina Gregory from
PSYCOM explains that during denial perhaps you cling to a false hope that they identified the wrong
person. In Phoenix s case, she is trying to identify the scarecrow as the ghost of anyone but her
grandson. This idea leads the reader to believe that Phoenix is still in her grief cycle over the lye
poisoning death of her grandson. Phoenix s denial over the death of her grandson, does not change the
reality that there is no one at home for her journey s elixir to

Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) Essay
Have you ever been around someone who seems arrogant? It may not be just arrogance, that
individual may have a Narcissistic Personality Disorder or NPD. Narcissus, a Greek mythological
character, fell in love with his reflection in the water and could never pull himself away, so he ended
up dying right beside the water after a while (Marcovitz 1). Narcissism became known as being self
centered and was developed after this Greek myth (Marcovitz 1). This disorder affects less than 1% of
the American population and it occurs more in men than women (Thomas 1). Later on in life most
people with NPD will experience severe symptoms around the ages of forty or fifty years old (Psych

Narcissists ruin the bonds that kept the relationships together creating negative impacts on their social,
family, and work life (Cherry 1). Narcissists create unrealistic goals and images of themselves,
clouding their thought process and reasoning (Nakate 1). The behavioral issues can generate conflict
with the people who are really close to them. This personality disorder can be caused by how the child
was raised and their own personal feelings. A person with a low self esteem is the most common
reason why narcissism begins (Thomas 1). If they feel uncomfortable or inferior in a situation a
narcissist will immediately beef up their image and self worth to make them feel superior again
(Thomas 1). Narcissists become very defensive when people question their accomplishments or talents
because they have to try and keep their ego and image safe (Thomas 1). Another aspect that
contributes to narcissism is the way the parents raised the child. Permissive parenting encourages the
child to rely completely on themselves, so they have to be independent (Thomas 1). With this type of
parenting there usually are not any guidelines or rules for the kid to follow so they would eventually

The Waves Of New York City Essay
The Waves of New York City
Nia Scott
Away is a documentary about the surfing subculture in New York City that is shown through three
female surfers at Rockaway Beach.
The film was directed and produced by Elisa Bates. It was shown in many surf film festivals
including; New York Surf Film Festival, Newport Beach Film Festival, and Pop up Surf Film Festival.
There is something so spiritual about surfing. I have never surfed a day in my life but every time I
watch others surf I feel this yearning to pick up a board and join them. It looks like one of the most
dangerous but most fulfilling activities at the same time. I once read somewhere that humans are
attracted to water and enjoy being in water because 70% of our body is made up of water and at
molecular level, we crave water. When I watch surfers, I feel that it s true and that I m being pulled
into the waters from deep within myself. It s no surprise the sound of waves calms most people and
helps them to relax. We associate the sounds of the ocean with calmness so surfers are just people in
search of the ultimate mediation. Don t get me wrong, surfing is not as simple as picking up a board
and going into the ocean. It takes a lot of hard work to be able to surf and the bigger the waves, the
harder it is to surf. Surfers have to have great upper body strength, an ... Show more content on

Essay On Arts Integration
When I was working for Girls Rock Math a summer camp that incorporates arts activities as a method
of teaching math concepts with the intention to spark young girls interest, I noticed a significant
increase in the girls interest when arts activities were present compared to when it was just plain math.
The first and second graders in my class appeared to be much more excited about the subject and more
concentrated when the teacher was trying to explain the instructions. This discovery makes me
wondering about the influence of arts integration has on students learning. Defined by The John F.
Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, arts integration is an approach to teaching in which students
construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form. By integrating arts into core subjects
teaching, educators are allowing students to learn through the arts, with the arts or accompanied by art
lessons. In fact, arts education has been constantly associated with higher individual achievement.
Established in 2012, the No Child Left Behind Act confirms learning the arts as a core academic
subject that all school should incorporate. It puts arts on equal footing with the other core subjects and
paves the way for the arts to be recognized both as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

economic situation which requires redistribution of funds, accompanied by the sharpening focus by
national and state educational policy makers on core subjects achievements, directly impacts the

mandated the arts be integral parts of the standard curriculum and successfully infused them into their
educational institutions, the arts in the United States typically connected with those who are

The Problem Of Crime Rate
Abstract
Crime is a big problem in the world. Many believe that nothing can be done to prevent it. The crime
rates are increasing rapidly all around the world. Crime is not easy to completely remove from our
society. For many years Scientist and psychologists have argued over whether upbringing forms of a
child s behavior or whether they are born with a personality disorder, or could it be the way their brain
is set up or their body type? Society may never really know all the causes of this criminal behavior.
With all the disagreement going on with the subject on the causes of criminals , the controversial
question would be Are criminals born, or made?
There are so many reasons behind the increased crime rate. I believe to figure out why the crime rate
is rapidly increasing, it is important to figure out the main cause and treat it. With proper measures
like straight laws, sufficient punishments, good moral and education, we may be able to avoid the
crimes to a certain extent.
In today society, crime rate is increasingly on the rise. The crimes that are being caused are stealing,
poverty, desperation, kidnap, rape, robbery, physical fighting, substance abuse, and many other crimes
that are not mentioned. For many years it has been said that a person s parents are the root to make the
person they become as an adult. A child s role model would mainly be their parents, but as a person s
age and grows older. They start to have other influence in their lives. Such as

The Protestant Reformation And The Reformation Essay
From the time Christianity began to the time of the Protestant Reformation, for about a millennium
and a half, there was only one sect of Christianity: Catholicism. After the Protestant Reformation,
however, different Christian denominations sprang up in many parts of Europe. The Protestant
Reformation s beginning is most commonly associated with Martin Luther s beliefs and his protest of
the wrongdoings of the Catholic Church. Before the Reformation, the Catholic Church was more
interested in raising funds for its leaders and keeping political ties healthy rather than the spiritual
enhancement of the Christian people. There were problems with Catholic leadership years before
during the Babylonian Captivity and the Great Schism, in which there were multiple popes as a result
of political rivalries between regions. These two events greatly depreciated papal authority for years to
come, and although many people still practiced Catholicism, their confidence and trust in the Church
was never completely restored. Luther protested the sale of indulgences, the belief that the Church s
interpretation of the Scripture was the only right interpretation (that people should read the Bible
themselves), and the corruption of the Catholic clergy. Catholics believed that, by purchasing an
indulgence, a soul could escape from purgatory; the leaders of the Catholic Church took advantage of
this belief in order to receive more revenue. Since the start of Christianity, the Catholic Church

Testosterone And Prostate Cancer Essay
The objective of this paper was to find a correlation between elevated levels of testosterone and
prostate cancer. The rationale behind evaluating high levels of testosterone and prostate cancer is
testosterone is necessary for the development of the prostate. Elevated levels are needed for adolescent
males can form their reproductive system, in which the prostate is included. In addition, testosterone is
important in the formation of the adrenal gland because testosterone, being an androgen itself, is made
it the adrenal gland after puberty. Therefore, some scientists and researchers believe that there is a
direct correlation between higher levels of testosterone and prostate cancer. Although the intention of

The pathway begins with an androgen receptor, which binds different androgens, such as estrogen and
testosterone. (Estorgen is the hormone mainly found in women although, men also have it. The form
men have it in is called estradilol) The androgen receptor is recognized by the ligands 5α
dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and testosterone, which are both present in male sexual development.
After the testosterone is formed it is bound to a serum sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and
begins to circulate through the body. However, just because the SHBG is bound to the testosterone
only the free form of testosterone can enter into the prostate. Once inside the prostate, the testosterone
has changed into a more potent form of itself, allowing the prostatic cells to begin to grow. When
these cells begin to grow, the prostate does as well. [2] Since testosterone is derived from a cholesterol
molecule, it can easily pass through membranes, like the plasma membrane, because it is hydrophobic.
Other studies believe that a mutation in the androgen receptor is found to increase the cancer stage.
These mutations are found between zero to four percent in the latent stage and stage B prostate
tumors. (Stage B prostate cancer is a cancer that can be found during a digital rectal exam and is
limited to the prostate. It is also

(U) Introduction (U) In the book Propaganda and Persuasion, Garth S. Jowett and Victoria O Donnell
provide a ten question framework for analyzing persuasive techniques. This paper analyzes two
political advertisements, Peace Little Girl (Daisy) from the 1964 U.S. presidential election and
Prouder, Stronger, Better (Morning in America) from the 1984 election, using Jowett and O Donnell s
Framework and other models.
(U) Peace Little Girl (Daisy) Campaign Advertisement
(U) During the 1964 election of Lyndon B. Johnson versus Barry Goldwater, the Peace Little Girl
(Daisy) commercial advocated for the audience to vote for Johnson. The commercial shows a young
girl in a field picking pedals off of a daisy. The girl is later killed by a nuclear bomb explosion. The
ideology and purpose of this propaganda campaign was to persuade people to vote for Johnson. In this
advertisement, Johnson stands for peace and stability. This advertisement infers that a nuclear war is a
reality if Johnson is not elected, and Goldwater becomes president. This advertisement does not
directly state that Goldwater could start a war, but alludes that his extreme views could put the U.S. at
risk. This advertisement s intent is also to portray Goldwater as an extremist, diminishing his chance
to build a moderate image to appeal to more voters. (U) The context in which this propaganda occurs
is an era with a prevailing mood of fear, unrest, and uncertainty. Americans feared the threat

  • 2. Review of Army of Shadows Essay In Army of Shadows (2008), Hillel Cohen reexamines the typical historical narratives about Palestinian perspectives prior to the Nakba. Much of the discussion pertains to the changes that took place within the mindsets of numerous groups of Palestinians during the British Mandate. It could be beneficial to compare the approach and methodologies of Hillel Cohen s book to Ilan Pappe s The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine (2006) and his reassessment of Israel s historical memory. Pappe focuses on the planning and actions that were taken to ensure an ethnically cleansed Israel and places this in direct contrast with current perspectives of historical rhetoric. Both authors draw from a variety of sources in order to adequately examine the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the more important aspects of nationalism in the 1920s was how Arabic newspapers were used to define notions of treason. Cohen assesses how one is determined to be a traitor, whether through absentee land sales or contributions to Zionist intelligence organizations, and how this leads to violent repression of all varieties of treason. It is interesting to note that although nationalism was becoming rooted within Palestinian society, the notion of treason was not wholly accepted. Widespread concepts of nationalism did not become the principal component in the basket of identities of each individual and the one for which he is willing to kill and be killed but instead, in the 1920s, setup the mechanisms that helped to achieve this goal: establishment of nationalist norms, coercion, and reward. The press, the religious system..., and the educational system served as central tools to setup the negative and positive influences into the norms of nationalism. This in turn led to the concepts of who is a traitor and who is not. As nationalism comes into its own by the riots of 1936, the definition of who are traitors or collaborators began to take a more specific role. Whether they were opportunists, village leaders, patriots, or moralists, all found themselves at odds with the rising forms of nationalism. Common responses within the Palestinian narrative ... Noblemen innately blossomed wealthier than commoners this presumably caused heightened power and strength regarding the noblemen s virtues in life. My Last Duchess by Robert Browning precisely portrays an aristocrat through a character of a Duke. The poem is intense, bitter and violent considering the Duke consistently expresses his insanity being used against his former Duchess. Browning is renowned for his use of dark humor in his dramatic monologues. This poem is an excellent example of a dramatic monologue that relates to Browning s main purpose in writing to explore the heart, mind and spirit of his characters. ... The Influence of Jerry Garcia on American History The Influence of Jerry Garcia on American History The vocalist and guitarist of the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia was one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century, impacting both the musical and cultural realms. Jerry Garcia was fated to become one of America s most influential people ever since he was born into Jose Garcia s household. During his childhood, Jerry Garcia lived in an environment that fueled his musical development and experienced many events that pushed him closer changing the path of American music and culture. Jerry was not only interested in musical arts but he also drew and painted often and enrolled in the San Francisco Art Institute to study and practice the visual arts. For his fifteenth birthday, Jerry Garcia received an electric guitar, his favorite instrument so far; by this time, Jerry was already playing the banjo and the piano. Soon after, Jerry joined his first band, the Chords, solidifying his destiny as a musician. Jerry Garcia s most obvious influences deal with music and the modern pop music band s role. He has changed the way music is produced, the way music relates to its listeners, and how the band interacts with its fans. Jerry Garcia was the renaissance man of the 1960 s singing, writing, and playing many instruments including the acoustic, bass, and electric guitars, the banjo, and the piano, which was a revolutionary idea for the time. He and the Grateful Dead worked to successfully enable the elimination of a record company in the music world. Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead all worked together blending different musical genres to create new styles of music that will continue into modern day. Jerry Garcia is largely responsible for the revolution in the identity of the music artist, for the increase in popularity of the live album, for the divergence of many musicians from record companies, and for the changes in bands touring style and interaction with their ... • 5. The Eruption Of The Hawaiian Volcano The Hawaiian volcano is a shield volcano; they are the oldest continental regions of earth. They may even be the remains of ancient shield volcanoes. A shield volcano is tall and broad with flat, rounded shape. The Hawaiian volcanoes are built by countless outpourings of lava that advance great distances from a central summit vent or a group of vents. Extensive study of the Hawaiian Islands revealed that they are constructed of a myriad of thin basaltic lava flows averaging a few meters thick intermixed with relatively minor amounts of pyroclastic ejected material. During eruptions these outpourings help keep these volcanoes safe. When these volcanoes erupt lava fountains out form the volcano and is hot liquid lava is thrown into the air but usually not very high. The lava normally flows easily, and does not explode. These volcanoes also only explode if water some how gets into the vent. Mount St. Helens is composite volcano, which are also known as strato volcanoes. They are tall, symmetrically shaped, with steep sides, sometimes rising 10,000 feet high. They are built of alternating layers of lava flows, volcanic ash, and cinders. The large and generally cone shaped volcanoes form along plate boundaries called subduction zones where one of the earths plates melts as it falls back into the earth`s mantle. The eruptions are called explosive, and effusive, because vast amounts of gasses are thrown into the atmosphere, and the lava explodes and is vicious. A shield ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The worst part was, the young man was only nineteen, and his life was just starting. The jurors listened to all the evidence, then came the hard part, making the decision: guilty, or innocent. Eleven jurors said guilty and only one said innocent. There was a lot of peer pressure involved. I decided to write about different peer pressures three of the jurors used. The three jurors I picked are juror #10, juror #7, and juror #8.The first juror I want to write about is #10. One example of #7 using sarcasm would be this quote: quot; Why don t we have them run the trial over... quot; I think this quote clearly shows that juror #7 is trying to convince other jurors, that court s evidence proves the young man is guilty without reasonable doubt. Also to break #8 s spirit he used name calling, another kind of peer pressure. I believe this is a very good example: quot; The boy is guilty pal, like the nose on your face. quot; The third and last juror I picked was #8, he was not using sarcasm, nor was he muscle flexing, he was using reasonable argument, which helped him convince all the jurors that the young man was innocent. He did not try to convince anybody by screaming at him, on the contrary he tried to go over all the evidence, and he was using intelligent thinking, like trying to calculate exact times, and figure out the correct position of the switch blade in the chest of the father. He was also trying to recreate a situation to see if indeed one of the witnesses on the stand was lying. Though he helped to develop the group of Impressionist, he did not consider himself one; he referred to himself as a Realist or an independent artist. Degas preferred to paint scenes that were indoors and lit by artificial light rather than outdoor naturally light scenes. He used many different medium when making his art such as oil paints, bronze sculptures, engravings, photos, and sketches with pencil and pastels. They were both influenced by the world that was around them; they often used theatrical dancers and prostitutes for inspiration and subjects. Like Degas, Toulouse Lautrec was also strongly influenced by Japanese prints; he used the layout and formatting of the ukiyo e prints in his own prints. Toulouse Lautrec mimicked many of the lines and areas of flat color of ukiyo e prints in his prints (3). Degas did not focus on having solid lines; he would use many shorter lines to created contours that have more depth to them rather than continual flowing lines. His lines alone are not important, what is important is the shading that adds the dimension and tonal value to a piece. He is less interested in the contours and more interested in the way that the shadows create a more three dimensional space. His interest in shadows is seen in his use of pastels where the contours become the colored shading. When creating a composition Degas does not use classical centralized contained compositions, he often has partial figures that are cut off by the edge of the canvas and the center of the composition often contains unimportant information such as a doorframe or the edge of a table (4 absinth drinker). As the years go by, modern technology has created countless opportunities with endless resources. These resources can be accessed by billions of people worldwide. However, some may wonder what changes technology has made, and have these changes improved or damaged our lives? Many authors and publishers have pondered this and publicly expressed their own perspectives over the issue of modern technology. Alfonzo Porter, a publisher for The Washington Post, is a strong believer that technology has caused massive problems when it comes to educating students. The publisher mentions that student are losing interest in school and becoming more distracted with their cellular devices. In the newspaper, Porter writes, 76 percent of teachers believed students are being conditioned by the internet to find quick answers, leading to a loss of concentration. Alfonzo Porter believes that students are not taking advantage of technology, instead, they are manipulating it. In today s modern society, there is a higher percentage of students using their cellphones to find answers, compared to students that are properly reading a book to find solutions to their problems. This issue is leading students becoming less interested in expanding their knowledge. Another publisher, named Frederic G. Reamer, is a supporter of the negative effects technology have ... More specifically, the dis ability to identify with others or feel their pain is the primary nature of those who are strong on apathy. Empathy, in contrast, is defined as having compassion and sympathy towards others to the extent of being able to relate with them and their pains. Empathy is, also the ability to understand or feel what the other person is experiencing or going through. There are two more traits required for being an empathic person. One of them is, to master the art of listening. It is essential, that we have the ability to listen to what is really going on within the other person, and to the unique feelings and needs the other person is experiencing in that very moment. An empathic person will listen hard to others and do all he can to grasp their emotional state and needs. When it comes to listening, it is quite important to look and grasp even the non verbal cues that will enable us to truly understand other person s emotional state of mind. It indirectly initiates an introspection to question our own thoughts, beliefs and actions. This will enable us to take steps towards building better ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. My College Life In High School I am an international student and last year I was invited by my high school to do a sharing about my college life in the United States. I am getting everything I want, with the help of my family I started the sharing by this sentence. After a deep breath, I began my story. Two years ago, I just graduated from my high school in my home country, thinking that I could get into one of my dream schools in the United States and enjoy my fantastic 4 year college life. Since my GPA in high school was pretty high, I expected that all universities would like to accept students like me. I started applying for a couple of schools that I was very interested in, but did not receive any good news. Knowing all my friends had got their acceptance letters, I felt inferior and began to complain about my family s social and financial status. I complained about why my family could not afford me to go to a high school in the States so that I could have more chances to get into universities that I wanted. Another reason why I was so anxious was that I did not apply for any schools in my home country, so I had to take one gap year in the worst case. I did not want to do so because I thought everyone would feel disappointed in me and perhaps looked down on me. Unfortunately, I was rejected by all my dream schools. At that moment, I was extremely frustrated; I lost my confidence, I lost my hope, I could not see the road ahead of me. Then, I had depression. I reduced my volume gradually and the ... Racial Inequalities Inequalities Between Whites and African Americans In order for us to work towards a more racially equal society, we need to know what type of social policies contribute to racial inequalities. Then, we need to either change those social policies or get rid of them completely. Rothstein focuses mainly on housing policies, which segregated African Americans from whites. Those social policies did not only constraint African Americans from buying a house in neighborhoods predominantly white, but it limited their accessibility to other important resources and services such as employment and education. This is very similar to today s racial inequalities. According to Rohstein, ... St. Louis was segregated by interlocking and racially explicit public policies of zoning, public housing, and suburban finance, and by publicly endorsed segregation policies of the real estate, banking, and insurance industries (30). Real estate agents and banks contributed to this segregation between whites and African Americans. As soon as African Americans moved to a predominantly white neighborhood, whites would pack their things and leave. According to Rothstein, Once [a black family] moved in and was visible, real estate agents solicited nearby homeowners to sell quickly before an imminent influx of black buyers caused their homes to lose value (25). The King Cake is a brioche style cake traditionally made throughout the State of Louisiana during the weeks prior to Mardi Gras. The King Cake tradition is thought to have been brought to New Orleans from France in 1870. The celebration of Mardi Gras came to North America from France where it had been celebrated since the Middle Ages. It s decorated in royal colors of PURPLE which signifies justice , GREEN for Faith , and GOLD for power . In 1871, the tradition of choosing Queen of Mardi Gras was determined by who drew the prize within the cake. Today, such a find is still deemed to be a sign of good luck and it customary for the person who discovers the hidden plastic baby to host the next party. In the past such things as coins, beans, pecans, or peas were also hidden in each King Cake. In the early 19th century, the public celebration of Mardi Gras consisted mainly of maskers on foot, in carriages and on horseback. In 1837, a costumed group of revealers walked in the first documented parade , but the violent behavior of maskers during the next two decades caused the press to call for an end to Mardi Gras. Fortunately, six New Orleanains who were former members of the Cowbellions, a group that presented New Years Eve parades in Mobile, AL, saved the New Orleans Mardi Gras by forming the Comus organization in 1857. The men beautified the celebration and proved that it could be enjoyed in a safe manner. Comus coined the word Krewe and established several Mardi Gras traditions by forming a secret ... In a state with a greater gap in income inequality, youths of low socioeconomic status would have had a 30% lower income in their career compared to that of youths of the same status from states with less inequality. Likewise, individual in the former had a 8% chance of returning to school whereas there was a 10.6% with the latter (Kearney Levine, 2016, pp. 347). Failing to identify role models in low socioeconomic communities can cause one to fail to identify with college. However, one could also be demotivated by living close to a household of higher socioeconomic status (Kearney Levine, 2016, pp. 348 349). It makes the prospect on financial success seem comparatively unreachable. With lower obvious income inequality, there is a greater motivation to strive in education because one can feel more competitive with colleagues whose capabilities are not so superior to oneself. Ultimately, striving to achieve success through education was, as the researchers mentioned, most appropriately considered a cumulative measure of ability, reflecting innate endowments, environmental influences, and the result of formal and informal human capital investment (Kearney Levine, 2016). • 23. Soviet Expansion Into Eastern Europe Security has been disputed to be another driving factor, and possibly the main factor to the cause of the cold war as it is interlinked both with ideology and the nuclear race. For instance, ideology and security both influenced the same event, which in this case was the creation of the Eastern bloc. (Heywood, 2014) stated that Soviet expansion into Eastern Europe was seen as defensive rather than aggressive , motivated essentially by a buffer zone desire. Security was an important factor because the Soviets believed that by having the eastern bloc, they would be protected from Germany as they had been invaded twice since 1917. Stalin wanted to ensure that future attacks will not happen again. (Daddow, 2013) highlights how states are primarily concerned with their own survival and therefore prioritise military and security concerns . As a result this factor has great importance because it highlights how misperceptions about the soviets desire to protect itself from future invasion had led to several missed chances of peace. (Heywood, 2014) shows how the US was concerned that the creation of a soviet bloc was an expression of Russian imperial ambitions. Robert Jervis in Security dilemma states that states can neither neglect the possibility that others will become aggressive in the future nor credibly guarantee that they themselves remain peaceful . The Protestant Reformation And The Reformation Essay From the time Christianity began to the time of the Protestant Reformation, for about a millennium and a half, there was only one sect of Christianity: Catholicism. After the Protestant Reformation, however, different Christian denominations sprang up in many parts of Europe. The Protestant Reformation s beginning is most commonly associated with Martin Luther s beliefs and his protest of the wrongdoings of the Catholic Church. Before the Reformation, the Catholic Church was more interested in raising funds for its leaders and keeping political ties healthy rather than the spiritual enhancement of the Christian people. There were problems with Catholic leadership years before during the Babylonian Captivity and the Great Schism, in which there were multiple popes as a result of political rivalries between regions. These two events greatly depreciated papal authority for years to come, and although many people still practiced Catholicism, their confidence and trust in the Church was never completely restored. Luther protested the sale of indulgences, the belief that the Church s interpretation of the Scripture was the only right interpretation (that people should read the Bible themselves), and the corruption of the Catholic clergy. Catholics believed that, by purchasing an indulgence, a soul could escape from purgatory; the leaders of the Catholic Church took advantage of this belief in order to receive more revenue. After the testosterone is formed it is bound to a serum sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and begins to circulate through the body. However, just because the SHBG is bound to the testosterone only the free form of testosterone can enter into the prostate. Once inside the prostate, the testosterone has changed into a more potent form of itself, allowing the prostatic cells to begin to grow. When these cells begin to grow, the prostate does as well.
