GOLD: When a paper is published in an open access journal or made freely available on the internet 
immediately upon publication. Some open access journals change article processing fees to cover 
publication expenses. 
GREEN: When publishers allow authors to archive a specified version of their paper in an open 
repository following a post publication embargo period. 
HYBRID: When subscription journals charge a fee for an individual article in the journal to be made 
open access.

To Access UWS BMC Funds: 
First or submitting author must be a permanent UWS staff member 
OR 
A UWS PhD student whose principle supervisor is a permanent UWS staff 
member
Article Processing Fee Payment 
ARC/NHMRC allow grant recipients to use grant 
funds for OA payments (from 2012, check rules for 
your grant year) 
Schools/Institutes have discretionary funds for 
research- may be possible to access for OA 
PhD students may use candidature funds
