Reading Goals
The percentage of students scoring a level 3 on
the 2012 FCAT Reading will increase from 56% to
64%.
O Literacy Mondays will be used to implement reading

strategies for ALL students.
O Higher Order Thinking Strategies will be implemented
in reading, language arts, and social studies classes.
O PLCs will discuss formal and informal data and how
to use this data to drive instruction.
O All teachers will be trained in selecting and identifying
complex text.

O Wednesday pullout sessions will be used to target
students requiring remediation.

O Monthly writing assessments will be given school

rubric.
PLCs will discuss formal and informal data and how
to use this data to drive instruction.
In the 3rd quarter, 8th Grade Classes will conduct
student-centered writing boot camps twice a week.
All students scoring below a 4 will be invited to attend
interactive Saturday writing camps.

In the 3rd quarter, 8th Grade Classes will conduct student-centered writing boot camps twice a week. All students scoring below a 4 will be invited to attend interactive Saturday writing camps.

  1. Welcome to this year’s PTA kick-off for the 2011-2012. The faculty and staff at Smith Middle School are delighted that you have chosen to participate in the Parent-Teacher Association.
  2. Research has shown that when parents are involved in their child’s school, not only do their children do better in school, but the school itself is improved. So, thank you again for being a key element in Smith Middle School’s success.
  3. This is the the start of a brand new school year. And what better way to start than by looking to last years testing data to serve as a road map of where we need to go this year. So, this presentation will focus on analysis of last year’s goal, this year’s SIP Plan goals and the steps we must take to achieve these goals.
  4. First, we start with reading. As you can see in the graph, the Smith students have been making steady gains. In the last five years, Smith has grown from an average of 45% of students performing at a level 3 or above to 56% of students. The number of sixth graders scoring at level 3 and above jumped 7% last year. 7th and 8th grade did see a dip in scores. However, we will be taking the appropriate measures to ensure that this will not be the case this school year.
  5. In the last year, alone Smith has closed the achievement gap between the district scores and those of Smith Middle School.
  6. In order to continue to improve our reading scores, we have set a rigorous goal of increasing The percentage ofstudents scoring a level 3 on the 2012 FCAT Reading from 56% to 64%. In order to achieve this goal we will (state steps)
  7. Moving on to math. As you can see in the graph, 6th and 7th grade Smith students made significant gains with 6th grade increasing by 9 percent and 7th grade jumping 13 percent. Our 8th grade scores declined this year. As evident in the chart, our eigth grade had been steadily improving until last year. This year we will be taking aggressive measures to saefguard that all grade level percentages of students scoring a 3 or above increase.
  8. Smith is gold, and District in Red. 6th and seventh grade students have surpassed the district average. And with continued efforts., our eighth graders will soon be able to do the same.

  10. Smith saw a decrease in the percentage of students scoring a 3.5 or higher on last years writing exam. Prior to last year, Smith students had been showing a steady progression. The administration and faculty here at Smith are looking into possible causes for the overall decline of our eighth grade students. One avenue we are looking into is improving student engagement.
