ARC Smart Yearly Assessment- 2012-2013
1. ARC Smart Yearly Assessment: 2012-2013 School Year
Parin Patel, Supervisor, ARC Smart Community Service Initiative
The ARC Smart Program had an effective impact this school year, serving over 120 students in our five-week
module program and almost 700 in condensed, single sessions within the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Overall, we had 14 volunteers participate in the program and two are set to transition into supervisor roles for
the 2013-2014 school year. The program worked with multiple teachers from 32nd Street MAST, Foshay
Learning Center, Berendo Middle School, Weemes Elementary School, and 96th Street School over the course
of the school year and the overall results were quite positive.
The key assessment points from our five-week modules include:
72% average improvement in cumulative assessment scores
77% average improvement amongst male students
66% improvement amongst female students
Much like the 2011-2012 school year, we saw males improve at a higher rate than females overall, but female
average scores for the pre-assessments and post-assessments were still higher than the males in both categories.
The individual breakdown for each school is as follows:
School Pre-Assessment Avg.* Post-Assessment Avg.* Avg. Improvement
32nd
Street MAST 37.83 73.91 95%
Foshay Learning Center 26.25 71.88 174%
96th
Street School 75 91.25 22%
*Assessment scores out ofa possible 100 points
While the improvement percentage is higher at Foshay and 32nd Street, the scores are significantly higher at 96th
Street. The assessment scores seem to correlate with last year’s figures at each respective school as well, with
96th continuing to assess higher than the other two schools. The program has also received positive accolades
from the administration and the teachers note that the program has successfully supplemented their social
studies curricula. In addition, each school has requested the program to continue to offer its services during the
upcoming school year.
