Instructions for the Critical Essay
Utilizing seven to ten outside scholarly sources students are to write critical essays (5-7 pages not
including title and reference pages) documenting an essential issue with regard to the course’s influence
on a policy. Students may also include official and organizational research reports as part of their
allotted references too1. These essays are positional in nature (you’re arguing a stance using scholarly
evidence), and will be written in an academic and scholarly tone. Arguments must be cogent, logical,
and supported by facts (which will come from one’s research). APA citation and reference lists are
required. These essays will be well proof-read before submission. Font: Times New Roman, 12. The
essay should be double-spaced and numbered. Below are instructions regarding the format:
1. The assignment requires a traditional APA title page. Students may assign the essay its own
title, be creative. Again, the title page and references are not counted in the page requirement.
2. The structure of the paper should be sectioned like such:
a. Introduction
b. The Policy (here you will provide an explanation/background of your chosen policy)
c. Corresponding Issue #1
d. Corresponding Issue #2
e. Suggested Policy Change
f. Conclusion
g. References
3. The Introduction should provide a thorough roadmap of where you intend to take the reader;
thus, here you want to establish a clear but brief outline of your policy of choice and the issues
you plan to uncover—leave the rest for folks to see in the essay. This should be no more than a
good thick paragraph.
4. The proceeding pages should be well structured by sections/headings which will correspond to
remaining four points mentioned after the introduction. For example, for a policy one may
choose sentencing, and then his/her two issues may be mass incarceration and reentry (you’d
use those titles as the headings for your sections in the essay, or you can be more creative and
call them something else, but the sections need to be distinct from each other). The
information contained in each respective section will include a meshing together of your
scholarly sources and your understanding of your chosen policy. This part of the essay will
become more refined as one continue to engage in research. Remember, all points/arguments
explained in these pages must be cited and backed by evidence. Your writing should be both

Writing a Research Essay in International Relations and Political Science
This is some basic advice on writing an essay in International Relations. The advice is generic, and obviously particular assignments, topics, questions have their own requirements – but this general advice should apply most of the time.
Be aware of what a criteria grading sheet looks like, as this sets out the way in which the essay will be graded. The standard grading sheet looks like this, and you will notice that there are four separate criteria. We will deal with each in turn.
1. Structure/Organization: Have you answered the question? Do you have a clear argument that you defend throughout? Is it well organized with appropriate use of paragraphs?
2. Research: Are you demonstrating research skills? Have you used a range of sources? Is it thoroughly referenced, using an appropriate system, with a bibliography?
3. Content: Do you set out clear arguments/evidence to support your position? Have you considered counter-arguments/evidence? Is their evidence of critical thinking?
4. Presentation: Is the paper well-written? Is it proof-read for grammar and spelling errors?
1. Structure/Organisation
Essays need a clear and concise introduction, which sets out a position: the thesis or argument that the essay will defend. If a question has been set, the introduction needs to clearly answer this question. It does not provide a broad introduction to the topic (avoid waffle or ‘flowery’ introductions), but rather, specifies the particular position that the essay will pursue. The essay then defends this position clearly throughout! I strongly suggest beginning the essay with the line “This essay argues…”. If you can clearly set out your position at the start, it will solve a lot of the structural problems that many essays have. You can then use the rest of the introduction to expand on your argument, detail the case material you are using to support your position, explain how your position allows you to propose an answer to the question(if one is set), and outline the structure of the essay. When outlining the structure of the essay, using first, second, third can be a clear and informative approach for the reader.
The main body of the essay is organised in short, sharp, concise paragraphs. It is important to consistently link the material, ideas, theories, concepts, debates, arguments, evidence, and case studies that you evaluate in the main body of the essay back to the question, and to your argument. Though different courses and different types of written assignments have different objectives, normally it is a good idea to have a balance between theoretical/conceptual debates and discussion, and empirical evidence. 1). Psychological Purpose
This paper serves several purposes, the first of which is helping you gain insight into research papers in psychology. One of the primary goals of this course is to give students a broad understanding of the different components and the current state of the criminal justice system. Given however the number of components and the complexity of topics in the criminal justice field, another aim of this course is to guide students into becoming experts in one or more very specific areas.
*You are expected to work independently on this paper throughout the duration of the course (this paper should be a work in progress throughout the term, if left until the end, it will conflict with your other exams/assignments). For this paper, each student is required to identify one specific topic of their interest and write a term paper. THE TOPIC FOR YOUR TERM PAPER CAN EITHER FOCUS ON AN ISSUE (e.g. the low ratio of women to men as state police officers, the use of bail as a proxy for discrimination based on race and poverty), OR SIMPLY DESCRIBE THE HISTORY/CURRENT STATE OF A CERTAIN AREA OF A COMPONENT OF THE SYSTEM (e.g. the police’s use of recording devices, riots in prisons, work programs in prison, increased militarization of the police). BE SURE TO SPECIFY IN YOUR PAPER, WHICH OF THESE TWO GOALS YOU ARE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH. First, introduce this topic (i.e., introduce the topic to a casual reader), being sure to present evidence (from the literature) that supports your conclusion that the problem is worthy of concern (How serious is the problem? How common is the problem? And so on). This section should be about a page. Then summarize the available literature on the topic. It is wise to organize this review with appropriate subheadings to help you organize this information (e.g. historical overview, the role of certain key issues such as race or gender, as they relate to your topic, the role of policy, or whatever subheadings best fit your topic). Your review of the literature should constitute at least 5-6 pages of your paper. The last section of your paper—the discussion, should summarize the findings in your literature review and should include your own conclusion regarding your topic. Final Research Paper: What’s the New Cognition? Estrangement in Octavia’s Brood
For your final paper, please select a novum you find cognitively estranging in one short story. Using outside research, write a 6-8 page, double spaced, 1 inch margins, 12pt font, Times New Roman research paper that investigates the new cognition the estrangement leads you to explore. The page requirement does NOT include the Works Cited.
Final version due to Canvas 3/20 before 11:59 pm.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. - 1. PS 101 American Government Paper Guidelines Purpose The purpose of this assignment is to (1) teach you how to write a scholarly paper, (2) encourage you to analyze an issue from all perspectives, and (3) understand the importance of politics in our everyday lives. Requirements For this paper, you will write 7+ pages on a topic of your choosing. All of the topics mentioned in the Final Paper Topic Discussion from the first two weeks of class were perfectly acceptable. You will need to bring your topic to class Thursday 9/10 as we will be discussing them. Your topic should be turned in to me on Canvas by Friday at 11:59 pm. It will be under an assignment labeled “Final Paper Topic.” Since this is an academic and scholarly paper, you will need to use at least 4 scholarly sources and at least 8 sources altogether. Scholarly sources are peer-reviewed academic articles in journals. You can access them via the library’s database or google scholar (many say the latter is easier). We will devote class time to understanding what a scholarly source is and how to find it and cite it. Your other 4 sources can be government websites, think tanks, nonprofit websites, or news articles. You can write it in MLA, APA, or APSA style. Just be sure to follow whichever you choose consistently and correctly. Title Pages and Bibliographies do not count toward your page count, but you will need them. Again, we will discuss this in class. Times New Roman Font, Size 12, Double Spaced, 1 in margins. Length- Your paper structure might be different, and that’s okay. It’s normal for your Introduction and Conclusion to look mildly similar or to be a lot shorter than Parts 1-4. For reference, this would be a well-balanced paper that doesn’t focus too heavily or lightly on any one thing.
- 2. Introduction- .5-1 page Part 1- 1.5-2 pages Part 2- 1.5-2 pages Part 3- 1.5-2 pages Part 4- 1-1.5 pages Conclusion- .5-1 page. Structure Introduction- Introduce your topic to me. What is your paper about? Explain briefly. Why is it important? Give me the structure of your paper (so your main arguments). Transition to Part 1. Part 1- This is where you will begin to elaborate on the topic of your choosing and likely its history. Give me the context I need to understand your paper. Assume I am a general reader and not a Political Science Instructor. Part 2- Here’s where you should introduce the argument of support/ one side of the argument (depends on your topic but every topic has multiple perspectives. If you have trouble with this, reach out and I can help you identify different sections). Part 3- This is the section where you talk about the counterarguments to Part 2. This could be negative implications of something, flaws in the way it would work/ does work, a competing theory to something. Again, it is topic dependent, and we can discuss this further individually, but just present another perspective. Part 4- Give me your opinion. How do we fix the problem or which perspective do you agree with? Remember, throughout this whole paper you should be using evidence based reasoning and analytical thinking. Without evidential support, this might as well be an opinion piece for the local newspaper. Give me substance and support to what you are saying. It is okay to be opinionated in this section; however, I should not know what you believe in Parts 1-3. We’ll talk more in class about what I’m expecting. Conclusion- Don’t present any new information here. Just wrap
