Writing a Research Essay in International Relations and Political Science
This is some basic advice on writing an essay in International Relations. The advice is generic, and obviously particular assignments, topics, questions have their own requirements – but this general advice should apply most of the time.
Be aware of what a criteria grading sheet looks like, as this sets out the way in which the essay will be graded. The standard grading sheet looks like this, and you will notice that there are four separate criteria. We will deal with each in turn.
1. Structure/Organization: Have you answered the question? Do you have a clear argument that you defend throughout? Is it well organized with appropriate use of paragraphs?
2. Research: Are you demonstrating research skills? Have you used a range of sources? Is it thoroughly referenced, using an appropriate system, with a bibliography?

4. Presentation: Is the paper well-written? Is it proof-read for grammar and spelling errors?

Essays need a clear and concise introduction, which sets out a position: the thesis or argument that the essay will defend. If a question has been set, the introduction needs to clearly answer this question. It does not provide a broad introduction to the topic (avoid waffle or ‘flowery’ introductions), but rather, specifies the particular position that the essay will pursue. The essay then defends this position clearly throughout! I strongly suggest beginning the essay with the line “This essay argues…”. If you can clearly set out your position at the start, it will solve a lot of the structural problems that many essays have. You can then use the rest of the introduction to expand on your argument, detail the case material you are using to support your position, explain how your position allows you to propose an answer to the question(if one is set), and outline the structure of the essay. When outlining the structure of the essay, using first, second, third can be a clear and informative approach for the reader.
The main body of the essay is organised in short, sharp, concise paragraphs. It is important to consistently link the material, ideas, theories, concepts, debates, arguments, evidence, and case studies that you evaluate in the main body of the essay back to the question, and to your argument. At the beginning of the quarter, I introduced the idea of a metaphorical “dinner party with social theorists.” In this paper, you will demonstrate your ability to apply concepts from classical social theory to the contemporary social world by putting several different theories into conversation with one another. Your goal is to show how classical theory helps to explain and/or fails to explain the origin/operation of your social problem or feature of the social world (as you understand it). Here’s how to proceed:
1. Choose either (A) a social problem that you feel passionate about or (B) a feature of the social world that you find fascinating. Examples of social problems could include things like racial tracking in education or the conservative attack on labor unions; examples of features of the social world could include behavior like internet trolling or trends in romantic relationships among college-age people. The possibilities are quite endless. The easiest topic to work with will be specific and narrow, and also something that you are personally invested in (we will take Weber’s advice about value-relevance here ).

One of the primary goals of this course is to give students a broad understanding of the different components and the current state of the criminal justice system. Given however the number of components and the complexity of topics in the criminal justice field, another aim of this course is to guide students into becoming experts in one or more very specific areas.

How common is the problem? And so on). This section should be about a page. Then summarize the available literature on the topic. It is wise to organize this review with appropriate subheadings to help you organize this information (e.g. historical overview, the role of certain key issues such as race or gender, as they relate to your topic, the role of policy, or whatever subheadings best fit your topic). Your review of the literature should constitute at least 5-6 pages of your paper. The last section of your paper—the discussion, should summarize the findings in your literature review and should include your own conclusion regarding your topic. Overview
Having the Critique under your belt as well as quite a few journal entries must feel pretty good! Use this confidence as we now move into our first long paper of the semester, Synthesis #1. At first, see this paper as an extended argument you make about a particular topic using secondary sources to persuade your reader.
Topic Selection
I really want you to explore a topic that interests you and motivates you to think critically and write persuasively. Do not simply summarize a reading and claim that it is “right” or “wrong.” Instead, you must see connections between readings and extend the thinking here in a way you see fit. Look around the world around you, think of topics you have thoughts about in this and other courses, and also speculate about what would happen if you took the thinking of certain authors further in your desired direction. I only require that your topic must deal in some way with media and pop culture—the theme of our readings in the course thus far. We will spend time in class brainstorming topics as well as looking at sample essays.
What is a Synthesis?
If anything confuses a student when writing an essay like this, it is the actual term “synthesis”. Don’t worry too much about this term; instead, see what you are doing as arguing a position with a variety of sources to help you. What you want to do in this essay is show that you can both sustain a logical and persuasive argument, and control sources and their use to your persuasive end. Try to have your secondary sources have a “dialogue” with each other in terms of what they do and do not agree with in relation to your argued positions. We will practice this in class. As a matter of fact, we have been practicing this since the first week of class in discussion (esp. the lively discussion we have had in class).
Additional Help with Synthesis
It is very important in this essay to “Establish connections among readings”. The more you can have a “dialogue” between your sources, the more credible you will be as an author and the more importance you may place on your assessment of the ideas being discussed.
This is an essay that may really be helped out by using some of the templates from They Say/I Say. I am not going to assign that you use them in a certain order, but I do think that the templates are excellent ways to start “saying something” if you are stuck. Review pages 55-75 in They Say/I Say for some directions.

Assignment:
In an original paper of at least 3000 words, articulate and support (through reasoning and research) an argument related to your theme. For this paper, your thesis statement should be the argument you are supporting. For example, for a research paper on the death penalty, a thesis statement might look like this:
Capital punishment denies equal treatment under the law and violates the tenets of civil society; it should be abolished in the United States.
Begin by formulating a research question. A research question is the question you plan to answer in your paper. You should make a specific, original argument—ideally, your argument should be a “new” argument. Avoid generic topics like gay marriage, immigration, abortion, capital punishment, etc. The best papers will add something new to scholarly discussion on the topic. See Chapter 3 of the Palmquist book for advice about forming a good research question.You may define “argument” in one of three ways:
1. You may make a philosophical or theoretical argument.
2. You may propose a solution or course of action in response to a problem or opportunity.
3. You may take a position on a controversial issue.
Goals of the assignment:
1. Develop a research question and an argumentative thesis statement.
2. Use well-developed body paragraphs to support the thesis statement. A well-developed body paragraph includes a topic sentence, some of your own analysis and/or explanation, some evidence, and a conclusion sentence. Aim for paragraphs of about 8-10 typed lines in length.
3. Locate, read, and use scholarly research materials effectively and responsibly.
4. Use rhetorical strategies to appeal to readers’ sense of credibility, logic, and emotion.
5. Use grammar, language, and organizational principles in clear, correct, and effective ways.
Your paper should include:
1. An introductory paragraph and thesis statement that introduce the broad topic you are exploring and articulate the argument you plan to support.
2. Body paragraphs that support your thesis statement through facts and examples, research, and reasoning.
3. Topic and transitional sentences within paragraphs. You may use headings to organize different parts of the paper, but headings are not required.
4. A conclusion paragraph and a correctly formatted APA References page.
5. In-text citations that refer to or quote from 11-14 scholarly sources.
6. A correctly formatted abstract and APA title page.

According to this approach, to perform is to carry something into effect; hence, intercultural communication can be viewed as a process of carrying meaning, or cultural identity, as such, into effect.
When we speak of performativity or performance in intercultural communi cation, we must remember that "performance is the manifestation of performa tivity. This is to say, performativity refers to the reiterative process of becoming, while performance refers to the materialization of that process-the individual acts by human players in the world" (Warren, 2001: 106; boldface added)
The performative approach suggests that intercultural communication is per formed, like music. There are a variety of verbal and nonverbal elements (notes), with which people create various language games (music). Some games are quite simple (a routine greeting), while others are more complex (business negotia tions). In all cases, though, meanings are performed; that is, they are created and re-created in the process of interaction. People perform various activities repeat edly, and through repetition these movements become symbolic resources making up cultural identity. In intercultural interactions, to use Nietzsche's expression, "the deed is everything" (quoted in Butler, 1990: 25).

Introducing the Performativity Principle
Looking at intercultural communication as performance, we will formulate our third principle of intercultural communication: the Perfo.rmativity Principle. There are three parts to this principle, and each deals with intercultural communication as creating and enacting meaning in the process of interaction. First, we will dis cuss the dramaturgy of intercultural performativity, or how people move from rules to roles. Next, we will present intercultural communication as a reiterative process. Finally, we will show the structure of intercultural communication as per formance. We will discuss each part separately and then formulate the Performa tivity Principle as a whole.
The Dramaturgy of Performativity:
From Rules to Roles
Communication as Drama. When people communicate with one another, they try to reach their goals by using various language means. Every act of com munication is a performance whereby people lace each other (either literally or in a mediated fashion, such as via the telephone or the Internet) and, as if on stage, present themselves-their very identities-dramatically to each other.
The theatrical or dramaturgical metaphor for communication does not sug

12.1 Innovation as a Tool for Global Growth
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
Identify three types of innovation that can fuel global growth.
Over 93 percent of global executives rate innovation as a key driver of organic global growth. More importantly, research
shows that around 85 percent of a company's productivity gains are related to R&D and other innovation-related
investments.
Innovation is the commercialization of new invention. However, many innovations do not necessarily build on new
inventions. An invention is a new concept or product that derives from ideas or from scientific research. Innovation, on the
other hand, is the combination of new or existing ideas to create something desired by customers, viable in the
marketplace, and possible with technology (see Figure 12.1).

The inputs used to innovate could be new inventions or they could be old ideas. For example, Henry Ford didn't invent the
automobile. Karl Benz from Germany did. However, Ford combined scientific management concepts with the automobile
production process to build automobiles more efficiently (Figure 12.2). This innovation built on existing inventions to
usher in a new industry with the scale to meet demand.

Most global managers struggle to get people in their companies to innovate. So far, no one has created a formula or model

Section 6.1Strategy Concepts
Introduction
After developing a set of objectives for the time period covered by the strategic plan, the strat-
egy necessary for accomplishing those objectives must be formulated. First, planners must
design an overall strategy, and then define the operating details of that strategy as it relates
to providing services, promoting operations, determining locations, and increasing revenue
sources. This chapter introduces the concept of strategy, and describes strategy elements,
approaches to strategy development, and how operational plans support strategic plans.
6.1 Strategy Concepts
The word strategy has been used in a number of ways over the years and especially so in
the context of business. As we discussed in Chapter 2, strategy means leadership and may
be defined as the course of action taken by an organization to achieve its objectives. It is a
description first in general terms and then, in increasingly greater detail, of the activities
the organization will undertake to meet its goals and fulfill its ongoing mission. Strategy
is the catalyst or dynamic element of managing that enables a company to accomplish its
objectives.
Strategy development is both a science and an art, a product of both logic and creativity. The
scientific aspect deals with assembling and allocating the resources necessary to achieve
an organization’s objectives with emphasis on matching organizational strengths with envi-
ronmental opportunities, while working within cost and time constraints. The art of strat-
egy is mainly concerned with the effective use of resources, including motivating people to
make the strategy work, while being sensitive to the environmental forces that may affect
the organization’s performance and maintaining the ability to adapt the HCO to these chang-
ing conditions.

BRITTNEY’S POST:
I would work to have a relationship with Olivia just like I would work to have a relationship with any one of my students. I would start every morning by asking her how she is as she comes through door, ask her at some point throughout the day how she is doing, and ask how everyone’s day went at the end of the day. I would also make a point on Mondays to ask everyone what they did over the weekend and Fridays what everyone’s plans are for the weekend. Talking about a child’s day and/or weekend is a great way to build a connection with my students, as well as making it clear that they can talk to me if they need to, and speaking to them with respect, not like they are below you. In addition, it would help to talk about your weekend plans and your day as well. I think each of my strategies will make a positive impact on building a relationship with my students because each one has everything to do with them learning to trust, talk to, and respect me as well.
A few suggestions I would give Olivia’s parents to further build this bond is to suggest one on one time after school a couple times a week or a monthly recap with all the students. One on one time with Olivia would consist of Olivia being able to talk about whatever she wants with homework help and additional tutoring if needed. A monthly recap would consist of one hour a month where the student and their parents can come in for cookies and discuss anything they want. Such as, critiques on my teaching skills/methods, suggestions on material/activities, or just anything I can improve on as an educator. I think it is important to develop a relationship with every child because children do not want to learn from someone they do not like or who does not like them. Collaborative problem solving is one of the guidance strategies to address challenging behaviors. This strategy is based on the notion that a child does not just behave undesirably. There must be a reason for such behavior. Thus, understanding why the child is having a challenging behavior is the start towards addressing this behavior (Schaubman, Stetson, & Plog, 2011). The focus is on building skills like problem-solving, flexibility, and frustration tolerance rather than motivation the child to behave better. Surprisingly, children with challenging behaviors do not lack the will to behave in a desired manner. Simply, they do not have the skills necessary to behave in a desired manner. This information is vital to addressing challenging behaviors among children in the future. This would be achieved through identifying the challenging behaviors, skills needed to address the behaviors, and partnering with the child to build these needed skills (
Kaiser & Sklar Rasminsky, 2017
). This strategy would help address Olivia’s disruptive behavior, impulsivity and addressing peers negatively. Reward and punishment may not work on Olivia. Thus, Olivia needs to develop skills to address her behaviors (Schaubman et al., 2011). One of the skills to develop is social skills to enable her to control her impulsivity, connect with others, and relate with her peers positively. Apart from this strategy, time-out or time-away would address Olivia’s challenging behaviors. A scenario portraying Olivia’s challenging behavior is her inability to wait for her turn during a group activity. She is always blurting out answers before her turn arrives. How can this be solved?

OVERVIEW
You will be provided several news stories about current events
by your assigned TA. You need to choose one of these stories.
In a 5-8 page paper, you need to identify, review, and apply a
specific communication theory to the people, events, or issues
that are involved in the news story.
SPECIFICS - PART I: BACKGROUND WORK
Step 1
Consider which news story to focus on. You will ultimately
need to choose one news story from the stories your TA assigns
to you. Each TA will have a different set of stories, so you can
only choose from the ones your own TA assigns to your section.
Step 2
Brainstorm communication topics. You will utilize one theory
to explain something that is going on in the news story.
However, it’s likely the case that you don’t know all the
theories yet (at least, not by name). So, in order to find a
theory, first read the news stories several times and think of any
topics related to communication (in general) that you see. This
could include various topics, such as conflict resolution,
ingroup/outgroup interaction, media effects, agenda setting,
nonverbal communication, technology and interpersonal
relationships, selective attention to media, emotion, and
2. persuasion. These are just a few of the many topics you might
find. If you’ve taken Comm 1, you can also think back to any
topics you remember from that class. The communication topics
you find can help you determine which theory to use in your
paper.
Step 3
Use the literature to help you find possible theories. Once you
have some good communication topics/terms/concepts in mind,
start thinking about which of the theories we’ve discussed might
help you analyze the communication you see in happening in the
article. There are several ways to find a good theory for this
paper. You can look through the assigned readings posted on
GauchoSpace to see if any of the theories sound promising. But
be careful not to just pick the first theory you see. You can also
scour the research literature for sources (e.g., journal articles,
book chapters) that focus on your topic of interest. You can
search for a particular theory name if you already have a theory
in mind (e.g., Social Cognitive Theory, Groupthink, Elaboration
Likelihood Model). This can help you explore the numerous
theories that might be appropriate for the type of
communication you want to analyze.
Helpful Tip: Be sure to download and save the articles you read
while you’re doing your research. Save the articles as PDFs. It’s
easy to forget where you found an article. Saving downloaded
articles can save you a lot of time in the long run.
Step 4
Focus on one particular theory. Ultimately, you need to pick
one theory that you think has something valuable, insightful, or
interesting to say about the issues, events or people involved in
the news story. The theory you select might not a “perfect fit,”
and that’s okay! Not every

aspect of a theory will apply to the situation in your selected
new articles. Likewise, the situation in your news article might
be so multifaceted that many theories could potentially apply.
Your goal is to apply your theory as best you can to the
3. situation. In the end, the goal is for you to “see something new”
in the news story based on your knowledge of your selected
theory.
Step 5
You’re also strongly encouraged to find additional sources that
could help you provide depth and richness to the points you
make in your paper. Such additional sources might be other
articles, book chapters, or textbooks that give you helpful
information about the theory.
SPECIFICS - PART II: ORGANIZING THE PAPER INTO THE
FOUR MAJOR SECTIONS
1. Introduction
Write a comprehensive introduction that informs the reader of
the main ideas in the paper with a clear thesis statement and
preview. Try to make your introduction both informative and
engaging. Be sure to identify the communication issue/topic that
arises from the people or events in the story and the theory that
will help to explain it. It is possible that your introduction will
require more than one paragraph.
Helpful Tip: The main ideas to be presented in your thesis
statement are those you will cover in the In-Depth Application
and Analysis section. Thus, you might not be able to construct
your introductory paragraph(s) until after your write that
section of your paper.
2. Review
In this section, you need to summarize your selected theory and
its main ideas. In approximately 2-3 paragraphs, you need to
articulate the critical elements of your theory and how scholars
have used the theory in research. This can be harder than it
seems given that theories can be quite complex.
For this section, you’ll need to draw upon the course readings,
but the strongest papers will also provide additional sources
(e.g., journal articles, books, edited book chapters). “Peer -
reviewed” sources are, by far, the best types of sources to rely
on when writing this section. Avoid theory summaries you find
on websites—the information on websites might be highly
4. unreliable. We’ll discuss what “peer-reviewed” means
throughout the quarter. We’ll also discuss tips for how to
review theories in your paper.
3. In-Depth Application and Analysis
This section represents the heart of the paper! Across several
paragraphs, you need to discuss how this theory and its
terms/concepts would explain or apply to the communication
you observe in the news article. Be as specific, thorough, and
thoughtful as possible.
When thinking about this section, ask yourself questions such as
these (you do not have to cover ALL of these):
o In what specific ways does this theory provide me with new
understanding of these events,
people, or behaviors?
o What aspects of the events or behaviors does the theory
explain well, and why?
o What lessons can people potentially learn from viewing the
news events through the lens of
your chosen theory?
o In what ways might the theory fall short in helping to
understand these events/behaviors?

As you think through your answers to these types of questions,
you should begin to see potential main ideas emerge for you to
write about in your paper. One you arrive at the 3-4 main ideas
you want to focus on, you should start thinking about those
main ideas as arguments. That is, each main idea is a claim that
you need to support with evidence. You claim is only as good as
the evidence you provide to support it!
So, where can you find evidence to support your claims? The
answer, once again, is your peer- reviewed sources.
Ultimately, the goal in this section is to show that you gained
new and valuable insights into the events in the news story
based on your newly-acquired knowledge of communication
theory. In addition to the clarity of your main ideas, we’ll be
assessing this section on the quality of the argume nts you make
5. in support of your main ideas.
4. Conclusion
In 1-2 paragraphs, you should review the main points you
covered in the paper. Strong conclusions, when possible,
provide the reader with thought-providing statements on the
topics you wrote about in In-Depth Application and Analysis
section.
REQUIREMENTS AND POLICIES
Format
The paper should be 5-8 pages of text (not counting title page
and references). Your title page should have your name, Perm #,
course name (i.e.,, and TA Name. You do NOT need an abstract
for this paper. The paper should be typed, double- spaced, page-
numbered, with 1" margins and Times New Roman 12-point
font. Please use APA formatting throughout the paper. Note that
Word’s default settings are usually wrong for this assignment
(margins too big, font too small, extra line spaces inserted after
paragraphs, etc.), so you’ll need to change these settings. If you
have questions about formatting, don’t’ hesitate to ask! All
papers should also have proper spelling, grammar, and
punctuation. Problematic writing mechanics hinder the clarity
of your ideas and the strength of the arguments, and will
therefore detract from the paper score.
APA Style Citations and Plagiarism
Since this assignment requires you to make good use of the
thoughts, writings, and work of others, proper citations are
essential. Your paper must follow APA style (not MLA) for in-
text citations and for your reference list. You will find some
guidelines for APA style on GauchoSpace. We will also review
key features of APA formatting.
Plagiarism will result in a failing grade in the course and
further disciplinary action consistent with student conduct code
(see syllabus for details). Be especially carefully not to
“borrow” from another student’s paper, as this is also
plagiarism (whether or not specific words have been changed).
In short, do your own work.
6. You must also be sure to write your paper on one of the exact
news stories that your TA assigns to you. If you write about a
story not assigned to your section, your paper will receive a
zero grade.

papers are marked down 10 points per day late (see syllabus for

can only grade what you submit. Always keep a copy of your
paper on hand for your records as well. In cases of serious
emergency, please notify your instructor and/or TA as soon as
possible, and we will proceed from there depending on the
nature of the emergency.
GRADING CRITERIA
Your score will be based on how well your paper, compared to
other students’ papers, shows: 1. depth of analysis in using
course concepts and outside research, 2. effectiveness at
articulating and supporting arguments, 3. accurate and thorough
understanding of course material and outside research, 4.
University-level writing and organization, and 5. adherence to
the instructions.
Note that we do not deduct points from your paper, but rather
you earn points for writing with clearer understanding and for
making better, stronger, more insightful arguments than other
papers do. It’s often unclear what a truly excellent paper will
look like until we read the papers that are turned in. We
anticipate that “average” papers will receive the equivalent of
about a B-/C+ grade. The papers that tend to end up in that top
range are the ones that apply the theory and discuss the research
not only with accuracy, but also with depth, insight, and strong
organization.

Conclusion
The closing paragraph is designed to bring the reader to your
way of thinking if you are writing a persuasive essay, to
understand relationships if you are writing a
comparison/contrast essay, or simply to value the information
you provide in an informational essay. The closing paragraph
summarizes the key points from the supporting paragraphs
without introducing any new information. Every Reference on
the references page must have a citation in your text, and every
citation must be listed on the references page as well. If in
doubt, cite!

WATCH: What is live video dating and how does it work?
Television game shows have made dating a form of
entertainment for the
masses for decades. More recently reality TV has adopted the
genre, with
hits like Love Island and First Dates. Now the phenomenon has
moved online
- and anyone can play.
"I remember it as if it were yesterday. I was so nervous to eve n
say, 'Hi'. The first
time I saw him smiling, my heart told me. 'That's the one, I'm
going to make that
man happy whatever it takes."
Ericka's heartfelt letter (which she published on social media)
11. recalling the
first time she met boyfriend Lex sounds like a timeless tale of
love. But read
on a bit further and it becomes apparent that this is a love story
with a very
modern twist:
"I think the thing that caught my attention was how he made
everyone in his
stream feel important and welcomed. Not one comme nt was
missed. He made
everyone feel like they had a purpose in his stream."
Ericka on a live date with Lex as virtual giNs come flying in
from rivals
Ericka and Lex live in the US and met on popular dating app
MeetMe. Users
broadcast live from their phones and then interact with people
who tune in.
This live vlogging format includes a series of live dating game
shows.
Livestreamers are paired up to see if there is any chemistry
between them.
Viewers comment on a "stream" underneath, in real time. In fact
quite a bit of
the date can involve participants responding to these comments
- a bit meta,
but handy when the conversation runs dry.
Ericka began as what's known as a "lurker". She watched Lex's
dates. Liking
what she saw, she plucked up the courage to comment. Then she
put herself
forward for the "guest box", meaning she herself would have a

him - while others watched on.
Ericka and Lex are not the only couple to have got together this
way.
Kevan and Haley are livestreaming stars on the MeetMe dating
app
Thirty-eight-year-old musician Kevan and make-up artist Haley,
22, also met
on MeetMe this year.
Neither had been on other dating sites before, but they didn't
come on the
platform with the intention of "dating", they say. They just
wanted to "stream"
and meet people.
Haley started streaming "to share my positive energy".
She watched popular livestreamers for inspiration and saw
Kevan. "I promised I
would never catch feelings, but when something is right in your
gut, you take
it," she remembers.
Like Ericka, she appreciated the way she could see how Kevan
behaved with
different types of people on the app, which gave her a measure
of him as a
person.
When they met for the first time offline, in Orlando, Florida,
Haley says it was
"a dream come true".

They still stream together on the platform individually and as a
star couple.
Sometimes they even take part in "dates" with other people, on

understanding that "nothing can go beyond a crush".

MeetMe is part of a suite of dating apps run by US company
The Meet Group.
Others include Skout, Tagged (which focuses on an African-
American
audience) and LOVOO (an app developed in Germany, which
MeetMe bought).
Between them they have more than 15 million users and on
average 180,000
dating games are played each day, with more than one million
people
watching the live dates unfold - mainly in the US, though some
in the UK too.
The group's chief executive Geoff Cook describes the platforms
as "a public
version of speed dating" and compares them to Twitch, where
huge audiences
watch computer gamers play and interact with their favourite
stars.

Like Twitch, the most popular "daters" can make money, as

them virtual giNs - suitably romantic, like roses and chocolates
- which can be
converted to cash.
You buy a virtual giN like you would buy someone a drink at a
bar, to get that
person's attention, explains Cook.
Though a top livestreaming dater can make close to $1m
(£750,000) a year,
Cook says the vast majority don't make much money. Most
users are there to
flirt, have fun and find a real-life partner in their locality.
Some users are also there to harass and leave lewd comments.
So the
livestreams are monitored by both human moderators and
computer soNware,
searching for abusive language.
"Dating apps have been evolving toward ever-increasing
authenticity and
nothing is more authentic than live video," says Cook.
Lockdown has
accelerated that trend, making people accustomed to live video
calls for
remote work and keeping in touch with family members, he
reckons.
The number of dating games being played on the apps has
nearly doubled
since lockdown.
Voyeurism
"It's fascinating to think where the live video dating trend came
15. from," says
dating expert Charly Lester.
It first got big in China with the Momo app, she says, even
though the country
has such a different culture to the US.
Lester wrote a popular dating blog in London for many years
and has since
worked as a consultant for dating companies.
She is not surprised by the rise of live video dating and the
voyeurism that
goes with it.

interested were other singles, but you suddenly realise that
dating is
something that fascinates everyone, even people in couples."
Being in the audience for a date on an app allows you to "test
the waters", she
says.
There is still a little bit of a stigma around dating sites and the
"gamification"
of it helps to get round this, she thinks.
Lester reckons live dating with an audience is a new trend that
will prove
popular beyond specialist apps like MeetMe, though more
formal dating
platforms, which use detailed questionnaires to match people,
16. may resist it.
Plenty of Fish is a mainstream dating site currently offering live
dating
experiences. Badoo also recently experimented with the idea.
Instagram Live
Meanwhile, some aspiring dating stars are using other social
media platforms
to create their own live dating shows.
Urszula Makowska, 25, was growing increasingl y disillusioned
with New York's
online dating scene.
The fashion blogger was ready to give up on apps like Tinder,
but lockdown
proved a turning point.
Her friends decided - with her consent - to find some eligible
bachelors, then
set up a series of live dates on Instagram, using her account.
A few other influencers had broadcast dates this way too and
dating app
Bumble had created a weekly chat show on Instagram Live
called Virtual
Dating Dial In.
Some men declined the date with Urszula when they learned it
would be
broadcast live.

Those who took part had their charm rated by Urszula's
17. thousands of
followers, who voted on whether there would be a second date.
Urszula says the feedback has changed her approach to dating.
She learned that she oNen cuts men off mid-sentence and is now
a better
listener.
She also learned to be more open-minded about the kind of
person she was
looking for.

But was the project really about finding love, or finding new
followers? She is
aNer all a social media influencer, who grows more powerful as
her audience
increases.
"You don't do it to grow your followers, that's not cool," says
Urszula.
Post-date analysis
Since the outbreak of coronavirus people are no longer satisfied
with "a
shallow interaction like swiping and a handful of text
messages", says Geoff
Cook of the Meet Group.
Video has become by default a way to filter out people you have
met on apps,
to decide who you actually want to meet in person, he says.
18. But broadcasting these video dates themselves, as entertainment
to
spectators, is that not a little, well, shallow?
The usual criticism of dating apps is the excess of choice, says
Cook. This
makes people restless and unlikely to commit to a relationship.
Observing how someone behaves in a livestream means you get
to know the
person better, he says. "And once you've connected with
someone, how you
met is secondary."
Matching couples can win things like restaurant vouchers on
MeetMe
Kevan and Haley, who are both committed Christians, agree on
this. Asked if
they would be happy to tell any future grandchildren that they
met on a live
online date, Haley says: "Everyone's scared or embarrassed to
say we met on
Tinder, or whatever, because they think people use these apps
for bad reasons,
but this is our truth so it's what we're going to say."
"The cool thing about livestreaming, and Haley knows this,"
says Kevan, "is we
weren't looking for love. I was committed to being single, and
she changed
that."
