Chris presented findings from a national study which used the feedback from students from more than 20 universities. Why? After every Studiosity session, students give feedback. That feedback from students needs to be analysed and used in practical ways (especially recalling Associate Professor Phill Dawson on Day One, who discussed the importance of feedback literacy and translating it into action.) Online, 24/7 support is needed as much to fulfil student expectations for their overall university service experience, as it is needed for delivering learning outcomes.

Professor Jessica Vanderlelie - La Trobe's Pro Vice-Chancellor Student Success - is one of Australia's most dedicated drivers of the student experience. Which makes it even more appropriate that she welcomed 'Students First 2019' delegates this year.
Listening to students is a critical part of driving effective change. Jessica described La Trobe University’s initiatives to put student feedback at the centre of the university. Delegates also heard that 70% of Studiosity users felt they’ll get a higher grade, 81% of Studiosity users felt more confident, and Studiosity users were 44% more likely to stay enrolled.

So much of the current discussion around Learning Analytics seems to be caught up in the realm of Big Data that informs the top executives and decision makers who are shaping institution-wide strategies. While these kinds of topics need to be explored, truly significant and transformative uses of learning analytics can be had at the grassroots level of the teacher and student.
This session will look at how Edith Cowan University is using Blackboard Analytics for Learn to empower staff and students with their own data, allowing them to make informed and timely decisions in their own teaching and learning journeys.

Learning analytics is a 'hot topic' in education with many institutions seeking to make better use of the data available via various systems. One of the key challenges in this process is to understand the business questions that people working in various roles in institutions would like to be able to answer. However, it is also important that these questions are appropriately structured and specific in order to gather the relevant data. This session builds on the workshop run at last year's Blackboard Learning and Teaching conference where participants explored business questions and use cases for learning analytics from a range of perspectives.

This document discusses course evaluation at a university with over 24,000 students across 19 schools and 9 research institutes. It summarizes the current state of course evaluation, including piloting a new online system, and establishes a working group to review course evaluation practices. This session reports the results of a recent OLT-funded national exploratory study addressing the relevant factors and their impact when implementing learning analytics for student retention purposes. The project utilised a mixed-method research design and yielded a series of outputs, including the development of a non-technical overview of learning analytics, focusing on linking the fields of student retention and learning analytics resulting in an institution level survey focusing on sector readiness and decision making relating to utilising learning analytics for retention purposes. An academic level survey was administered to academic staff exploring their progress, aspirations and support needs relating to learning analytics. Follow-up interviews expanded on their experiences with learning analytics to date. An evidence-based framework was developed, mapping important factors affecting learning analytics decision making and implementation. This was illustrated by a suite of five case studies developed by each of the research partner institutions detailing their experiences with learning analytics and demonstrating why elements in the framework are important. These findings were shared and tested at a National Forum in April 2015.

The Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) aims to highlight and incentivize excellent teaching in UK higher education. It will provide students and employers with better information about teaching quality and provide incentives for universities to value teaching equally with research. In the second year of TEF implementation, assessments will be carried out at the institutional level only, resulting in ratings of "meets expectations" or higher. Metrics such as National Student Survey results and employment data will provide evidence, alongside additional information from universities. The goal is to improve teaching quality while recognizing differences between institutions.

So much of the current discussion around Learning Analytics seems to be caught up in the realm of Big Data that informs the top executives and decision makers who are shaping institution-wide strategies. While these kinds of topics need to be explored, truly significant and transformative uses of learning analytics can be had at the grassroots level of the teacher and student.
This session will look at how Edith Cowan University is using Blackboard Analytics for Learn to empower staff and students with their own data, allowing them to make informed and timely decisions in their own teaching and learning journeys.
We will explore how learning analytics data enables staff to do things like identify and support students at risk of disengaging from the course early, monitor how students are actually engaging in their course and collect real evidence on student interactions that informs a continual process of improvement in learning design and resources.

Learning analytics is a 'hot topic' in education with many institutions seeking to make better use of the data available via various systems. One of the key challenges in this process is to understand the business questions that people working in various roles in institutions would like to be able to answer. However, it is also important that these questions are appropriately structured and specific in order to gather the relevant data. This session builds on the workshop run at last year's Blackboard Learning and Teaching conference where participants explored business questions and use cases for learning analytics from a range of perspectives.

HE Course and Module Evaluation Conference -
This document discusses course evaluation at a university with over 24,000 students across 19 schools and 9 research institutes. It summarizes the current state of course evaluation, including piloting a new online system, and establishes a working group to review course evaluation practices. The working group identified multiple purposes of course evaluation, from summative reporting to facilitating continuous improvement. They reviewed hundreds of existing evaluation questions and developed a standardized set of 5 core questions, with optional supplementary question sets. The working group aims to provide clearer guidance on the purpose and use of course evaluation to improve both teaching and course design across the university.

Australian university teacher’s engagement with learning analytics: Still ea...
This session reports the results of a recent OLT-funded national exploratory study addressing the relevant factors and their impact when implementing learning analytics for student retention purposes. The project utilised a mixed-method research design and yielded a series of outputs, including the development of a non-technical overview of learning analytics, focusing on linking the fields of student retention and learning analytics resulting in an institution level survey focusing on sector readiness and decision making relating to utilising learning analytics for retention purposes. An academic level survey was administered to academic staff exploring their progress, aspirations and support needs relating to learning analytics. Follow-up interviews expanded on their experiences with learning analytics to date. An evidence-based framework was developed, mapping important factors affecting learning analytics decision making and implementation. This was illustrated by a suite of five case studies developed by each of the research partner institutions detailing their experiences with learning analytics and demonstrating why elements in the framework are important. These findings were shared and tested at a National Forum in April 2015.

The Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) aims to highlight and incentivize excellent teaching in UK higher education. It will provide students and employers with better information about teaching quality and provide incentives for universities to value teaching equally with research. In the second year of TEF implementation, assessments will be carried out at the institutional level only, resulting in ratings of "meets expectations" or higher. Metrics such as National Student Survey results and employment data will provide evidence, alongside additional information from universities. The goal is to improve teaching quality while recognizing differences between institutions.

ARLG 2019: Myer have we made a difference
The document discusses the challenges of measuring the long-term impact of a university learning development service called The Learning Hub. A collaborative and sustainable approach to institutional curriculum development

They conducted a project to improve student outcomes through enhancing curriculum design and developing staff capabilities at two colleges in Victoria, Australia. Over 147 units were identified for transformation. A 10-week online professional development course supported teaching staff through the curriculum changes. Evaluation found most staff were satisfied with the course and felt confident applying strategies introduced. While student performance data is still being collected, qualitative feedback indicated staff valued peer learning and applying ideas like active learning and course narratives. Lessons included the need for sustained support of professional development and unit transformation.
ABLE - NTU Eunis case study - Nov 2017

Reflections on 2020: The pandemic and the response of Australian HE

- Educational designers have played a key role in upskilling academic staff and helping them transition content online, but some designers report bearing the brunt of stressed academics' frustrations.
- Moving forward, it will be important to consolidate gains from increased online training while ensuring quality is not abandoned, and to identify opportunities for educational designers from their increased contributions.

Using a Microsoft Teams Group site to collaboratively support staff digital capabilities at the University of Brighton. The site aimed to share information, capture good practices, and answer questions to support flexible, inclusive, and multimodal digital learning. Over 330 members from various departments used the site, mostly asking questions about technology which led to broader pedagogical discussions. Analytics showed high engagement from July to November 2020 during remote teaching. The site successfully reduced pressures on technical support staff and hopes to collect case studies of good digital teaching practices. Evaluations will assess the site's role in fostering an online community of support.

- 1. Problem statement • In what ways can a very small Career Development Center team in University College Dublin, with limited resources, provide an impactful career support service for 6,000 students so that they can successfully manage the transition from college to work
- 2. Selected Idea 1 • Develop intermediate layers of service delivery that involves students being trained to provide the service • This increases the resources for delivery…the existing specialists become facilitators …… issues of skills, rewards etc. will need to be addressed

What is the starting point? What level of preparation do we need before we engage with students? How do we get lecturers etc. on side on this Ideas Engage with students at exploratory stage Maybe test this in one faculty Select the faculty with greatest chances of success
- 5. Selected idea 2 • Collaborate with other universities - there may be services that are common to all universities e.g. they could share the same online platform and some documentation guidelines and still differentiate locally through the provision of a personal service
- 6. Prototype UCD Students Differentiated Local Service All university students in Ireland share a common technology platform to provide career support services – including possibility of MOOC’s
- 7. Client Feedback What worked Great idea Potential for cost savings and better service What could be improved Nothing at this stage It needs to be further explored - Idea is sufficiently conceptual right now and the improvements can happen with feedback and input Questions Where do we start To what degree do we need to develop the concept further How will the college hierarchy respond to this Is there too much politics involved for this to work Ideas Lets get some informal picture of where the other universities are at Are they similar to us
- 8. Reflections • It’s a very dynamic process and openness is critical • There is a temptation to get attached to my ideas and want to defend them – this may be based on an insecurity and a fear of criticism • The process even requires some playfulness so that all possibilities continue to be explored • There is a need to become comfortable with “not knowing” the answer and to accept that the process is about the answer being discovered over time – its important to trust the process
- 9. Reflections contd. • This can actually be a low cost process and no substantial costs need to be incurred until all stakeholders are on board • While openness is important the process requires very strong interpersonal skills so that all stakeholders can be engaged • Its been a real learning experience and has opened my eyes to where I need to develop my own skills to effectively manage this
