Problem statement
• In what ways can a very small Career
Development Center team in University
College Dublin, with limited resources, provide
an impactful career support service for 6,000
students so that they can successfully manage
the transition from college to work

• Develop intermediate layers of service
delivery that involves students being
trained to provide the service
• This increases the resources for
delivery…the existing specialists
become facilitators …… issues of skills,
rewards etc. will need to be addressed

Reflections
• It’s a very dynamic process and openness is
critical
• There is a temptation to get attached to my ideas
and want to defend them – this may be based on
an insecurity and a fear of criticism
• The process even requires some playfulness so
that all possibilities continue to be explored
• There is a need to become comfortable with “not
knowing” the answer and to accept that the
process is about the answer being discovered
over time – its important to trust the process
Reflections contd.
• This can actually be a low cost process and no
substantial costs need to be incurred until all
stakeholders are on board
• While openness is important the process
requires very strong interpersonal skills so
that all stakeholders can be engaged
• Its been a real learning experience and has
opened my eyes to where I need to develop
my own skills to effectively manage this

  • 1. Problem statement • In what ways can a very small Career Development Center team in University College Dublin, with limited resources, provide an impactful career support service for 6,000 students so that they can successfully manage the transition from college to work
  • 2. Selected Idea 1 • Develop intermediate layers of service delivery that involves students being trained to provide the service • This increases the resources for delivery…the existing specialists become facilitators …… issues of skills, rewards etc. will need to be addressed

Client Feedback What worked: Practical concept Worthy of consideration Its different to current model Its sufficiently broad to allow for the dynamic design of a new model What could be improved Could develop idea in greater detail Different scenarios to be explored On the other hand better not to overdevelop with the benefit of feedback Questions How do we engage with students on this? What is the starting point? What level of preparation do we need before we engage with students? How do we get lecturers etc. on side on this Ideas Engage with students at exploratory stage Maybe test this in one faculty Select the faculty with greatest chances of success
  • 5. Selected idea 2 • Collaborate with other universities - there may be services that are common to all universities e.g. they could share the same online platform and some documentation guidelines and still differentiate locally through the provision of a personal service
  • 6. Prototype UCD Students Differentiated Local Service All university students in Ireland share a common technology platform to provide career support services – including possibility of MOOC’s
  • 7. Client Feedback What worked Great idea Potential for cost savings and better service What could be improved Nothing at this stage It needs to be further explored - Idea is sufficiently conceptual right now and the improvements can happen with feedback and input Questions Where do we start To what degree do we need to develop the concept further How will the college hierarchy respond to this Is there too much politics involved for this to work Ideas Lets get some informal picture of where the other universities are at Are they similar to us
  • 8. Reflections • It’s a very dynamic process and openness is critical • There is a temptation to get attached to my ideas and want to defend them – this may be based on an insecurity and a fear of criticism • The process even requires some playfulness so that all possibilities continue to be explored • There is a need to become comfortable with “not knowing” the answer and to accept that the process is about the answer being discovered over time – its important to trust the process
  • 9. Reflections contd. • This can actually be a low cost process and no substantial costs need to be incurred until all stakeholders are on board • While openness is important the process requires very strong interpersonal skills so that all stakeholders can be engaged • Its been a real learning experience and has opened my eyes to where I need to develop my own skills to effectively manage this
