Pros and Cons of Technology in Classrooms
For years, new technologies have been arising and improving drastically. To some generations
technology is nothing but foreign to them. Children these days are so familiar with how to use
technology; they almost start to learn after they start walking. So many people are abusing
technology by overusing it and even some, becoming addicted. If technology is going to be used, it
should have a positive purpose behind it. Throughout the past five years technology has become a
main focus in the classroom and schools. Teachers are beginning to use computers, iPads etc. to help
teach every grade and age. It has become so over welling that it could be believed that with all this
technology, there is no point to have a teacher. Teachers and schools ... Show more content on

Computers are beginning to take on the role of teachers. This way of teaching is often known as a
"flipped classroom". It has become a very common thing for a teacher to be using a computer or
powerpoint during class. Along with technology progressing so are schools. Many schools are
engaging students of all ages into technologies as a different approach to learning. Almost all
students in today generations are very used to this. (Pilgrim 1–6) Technology in schools has very
many positive aspects that are beneficial. Along with the students, teachers are also learning how to
use different technologies. Teachers are using technology to their advantage. Computers, iPods, cell
phones and iPads have become so familiar to children in this generation. They find it more
interesting to pay attention to something on a smart board or computer than an old school chalk
board. In 2013, a San Francisco based company created a software called ClassDojo. "Class Dojo is
a free classroom behavior management tool that allows teachers to provide on–time feedback to
students regarding individual and group behavior. The program, which can be operated from a
computer or mobile device, makes it simple to keep a class motivated and focused by providing
students with instant feedback (positive or negative) in class by awarding or subtracting points for
specific behaviors" (Vivian 4). Tools like ClassDojo makes younger students

Life Milestones : My Life Compared To A Travel Book
My life can be compared to a travel book. It is full of pages and chapters about places and
significant milestones that took me to where I am right now. Some chapters are similar to festivals in
Spain and some can be compared to the depressing, dirty and chaotic streets of Manila. This paper
will focus on life milestones that made a significant impact towards my literary development. It will
showcase important moments of my childhood, prepubescent and young adult life that will have an
effect towards my future as a teacher. The first pages began to unfold Christmas day of 1993 and I
was three years old. My mother has gifted me the first book I have remembered reading. The cover
is a shade of baby pink with animals and beautiful flowers in the cover. It was heavy and the smell
of the brand–new book lingered my room for days. It was such an experience! It is full of colorful
illustrations that made it seem like the drawings were jumping out of the page and were alive. It was
exhilarating! Every night my mother's voice takes a different persona as she reads the different
characters in the book. Her animated expressions gave life to characters such as the Cinderella, Red
Riding hood, Snow White, and Belle. I looked forward to reading rather than seeing it as a chore or
as an exercise. As I grew a little older, she started reading the pink book with me rather than just to
me. It started from sounding letters and soon enough I am forming my first worlds. Eventually, she

My Second Grade Class Atp.s 45
Many classrooms today are comprised of different children with different learning styles. Each class
is unique and different in their own way. All classrooms have students that come from different
communities, families, cultures, and traditions. P.S. 45 is a title one school which means that the
majority of the students live in a household of low income families. In this classroom,
approximately 90% of the students attending reside in low–income neighborhoods. While the label
of title one indicates that the state is providing the resources for students to thrive, it can also
indicate that there is a lot of pressure placed on the students to do well.
My third grade class at P.S 45 is an ICT class where half of the students are low–functioning and
half of the students are general education. My classroom contains 29 children, 15 boys and 14 girls
of mixed heritages. The majority of my students are Hispanic and African American; however, there
are a few students who are Caucasian and Asian, too. The class consists of many students who have
an impulsive tendency of constantly getting out of their seats. When this happens, it breaks the focus
of other students and disrupts the lesson. Most students come ready to learn, but some of the
students lack focus due to insufficient sleep and nutrition. Some students are more skilled than
others; however, most of the class is struggling academically. My class requires special and
differentiated instruction. Twelve students in this class

Texting in Class Is Rampant
Crafting Draft 1
21 April 2014
Cellphones are most common in society. The ease of access allows us to have the world at our
fingertips 24 hours a day and we never have to unplug. We can surf the web, book a flight, check the
weather, and message a friend 1000 miles away without leaving our bed. Texting has fast become
the preferred form of communication for young adults; however, students need to be dissuaded from
texting during class because of the result in loss of valuable class time, lack of effective
communication skills, and consistent use of improper English leading to a negative impact on
students' learning. Maryellen Weimer, PhD recently posted in Teacher Professor Blog "most students

Lack of comprehension and poor course work will result in a lower grade average. Students may
become frustrated and give up easily. Using texting as a quicker and more efficient form of
communication takes the emotional connection out of the equation. It allows us to not be physically
near the recipient or to take responsibility for miscommunications that lead to hurt feelings. While
texting, students do not need to make eye contact with their recipient or learn to read their body
language. In addition, there is no need to learn the art of persuasive argument or exchanging and
building on ideas. This is not only harming students in the classroom, but can have negative effects
when entering the workforce. After leaving college, students hope to land a job in their field of
expertise. In the workforce, teams are a diverse collection of persons – all ages and different
cultures. Texting may be acceptable in some situations, but there is still a great need for face to face
interactions. We learn how to become more comfortable meeting new people and interviewing for
jobs. There is nothing wrong the light banter between friends that texting can provide, but the
conversation is not necessarily deep. Texting allows us to stay in touch with others in a most
efficient way. We type a quick text, hit send, and in a matter of seconds our recipient has our text.
Receiving a text is fast, but typing out a clear, concise

What I Learned To Write And Read In The ESL Classroom
At the age of fifteen, my father brought me to the United States, and here I began my studies in the
ninth grade of high school. I learned English during high school and community college, but for me
it was not very easy to learn English and eventually I still have difficulty to write well or sometimes
to speak English. For three years of high school I attended classes that were entirely in English and
just one ESL class, in fact, in my last year of high school, I did not receive any class that will help
me with the language acquisition. My math, science, and social studies teachers focused more on
teaching their subject, then helping me to understand it. Unfortunately, at that time I still did not
speak fluent English. As a result of that I felt lost and confused because I did not understand what
the teachers were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As well, because I feel that I did not received the adequate help from my content–area teachers, in
other words, they expected me to comprehend, and know how write and read in English perfectly. In
my perspective second language students fell behind in their academics, because of the need of
teachers that are committed to teach not only their subject area, but to help students master their
reading, writing, vocabulary and language proficiency. This problem leads ELL students to drop out
of school, low self–esteem, and insecurity. For my point of view and experience some educators are
not trained to deal with these kinds of situations. They are not trained properly, and do not have the
skills to teach ELLs. As well, in some situations, some teachers do not even bother to teach ELLs,
because they do not want to waste their time on them. I more than willing to help students that are
going through the same situations that I went through. ELLs, in particular, need thoughtful and
explicit instructional support to learn the disciplinary

The Classroom Observation
Classroom observation is a main approach of teaching research. Scholars or researchers use video to
record the real whole class and observe the teachers and students' actions, words and the efficiency
in the class. Though the observation, they analyze what approach is more suitable. This paper will
select video 5 and video 3 as the material to do the classroom observation. Different aspects such as
teachers' responds, questions, instructions notes and students' behavior will be addressed to analyze
the efficacy of this class.
2. Brief introduction of video 3
The theme of english lesson in Video 3 is job interview with a large number of students, nearly as
many as fifty, who are native Chinese teenagers while teacher may be a native English speakers( at
least good at English). Because of the education system in China, most of the Chinese students study
English from Grade 3 in primary school, who already have some basic English vocabulary and
grammar storage like simple greeting, food, verbs about movement and so on though not mastery in
them. Meanwhile, They are capable of making simple sentence. Therefore, teacher began to teach
students some English skills, like listening, in middle school. The lesson is divided into three parts:
pre–listening, while listening, post–listening. In the pre–listening part, this teacher lead students
review some details about the listening transcript. While listening, students answer the question
sheet and afterwards, check the answers during

Pedagogy Of The Oppressed Analysis
Mid–Term Exam
Freire's words "True dialogue cannot exist unless the dialoguers engage in critical thinking" (Freire,
1970/1993, p.92). Here, the author emphasizes how imperative critical thinking is for dialoguers in
order to have a real conversation. In his book Pedagogy of the Oppressed, he elaborates the meaning
of critical thinking. According to what he said, when there is an agreement between the world and
people without separating them, it is critical thinking. Moreover, if an individual believes that
everything around her is not an unchangeable fact, but a process that is constantly changing, that is
also called critical thinking.
Additionally, Freire states that a process is described as critical thinking if a person takes his ...

For example, before studying in Seattle Central College, expressing my opinions was one of the
hardest tasks for me to do. However, now it becomes very interesting. That is why problem–posing
approach is one of Freire's best approaches that will be applied in my classroom in the future. If an
ESL teacher uses this method, her students will guarantee their freedom in choosing how and what
exactly they want to learn in English. When I was in middle school, my English teacher gave us a
passage about electricity and we were required to understand it and memorize its vocabulary. I still
do not get why we had to read about that topic! We were not electrical engineers neither majoring in
electronic engineering. We were just teenagers who wanted to learn how to make everyday
conversation in English. It would be more entertaining if the text was about something teenagers
like, such as music or shopping. If I were the teacher, I would first ask my students to tell me about
their favorite topics. Then, I would l choose the passages that would be taught in the class depending
on their favorites. This would encourage them to participate in the class, share their prior knowledge
and experiences, and learn from each other.
All in all, Freire emphasizes the importance of dialogue in creating a genuine environment for
learning. Yet, critical thinking should be engaged by conversation parties.

Observation Of Mrs. Trimble In The ESL Classroom
The classroom that I observed was in Kindergarten at Hopkins Elementary in Kirby, Texas. The
classroom consisted of 16 students; 12 fluent in Spanish and 4 fluent in English. The ESL level is a
Dual language of 90/10. English is used to reinforce when needed and continuously throughout the
day. Mrs. Trimble had a few students that spoke both languages coming into the classroom but
needed additional learning. Her instruction within the classroom was verbal, written, and visual aids.
I will be covering the following topics; were the students aware of class language and content
objectives, how did Mrs. Trimble instruct the content and language objectives, types of student
group configurations used, and how did she accommodate for different ELP levels?
When I first arrived all of the students sat at the carpet awaiting the teacher. I could see that the
students were aware of the class language and content objectives from the start. The teacher started
off the day using Spanish for math and ELA and after lunch she went into using English for science
and social studies. She had a few students that were ESL and also had attention deficit disorder that
she would work on one–on–one with. The content concepts are appropriate for this age and
educational background. Alphabet, months of the year, days of the week and numbers are taught

The Building Blocks Of Learning
Emily Whitmer Rose Glasser EDTP 201 10/28/16 Ethnography: The Building Blocks of Learning I
remember my first day going to a school to observe. It felt more inquiring, rather than being
obligated to go to school just because I had to, like the state required us to. Ever since I have been
given two field placements, I have been increasingly interested in the teaching profession. My first
field placement has been an eye opener for all other rolls in a school. It has showed me just how
important other rolls are in a school, and how they can affect and tie into how a student does in a
classroom. Having two field placements has given me a new outlook on the classroom environment,
curriculum, and what goes on behind the scenes in the teaching profession. In my second field
placement, which is what this ethnography will evolve around, I was placed at Blue Lick
Elementary School (right next to Knight Middle School). Blue Lick Elementary School collaborates
with Knight Middle School, to ease the transition to 6th grade. This school is located in Heritage
Creek, which is also close to my first placement, Fairdale High School. The population in this
neighborhood is low–income. There are 480 students and the student teacher ratio is 16:1. Blue Lick
Elementary School is a public co–ed school and accepts grades pre–kindergarten to 5th grade. At
Blue Lick Elementary School, 66% of the students are white. The next majority of the students are
black, which is 25% on a pie chart. Only 2% of

Can Literature Be Taught in the ESL Classroom
Of all the issues arise in the literary world, my focus would be on the fundamental issue of whether
literature can be taught in the ESL classroom or not. It had become a forefront debate for so long
that it remained a perplexing concern among educators. Some educators might think that English
should be mastered first before introducing the literature but some will say literature is the one that
actually can enhance the language mastery. In Malaysia, the changing of policy in teaching literature
in ESL classroom is obviously seen. In The Star, (Wednesday, April 28, 2010), Dr Mohamad Abu
Bakar, from Education Ministry Curriculum's Development Centre said that it was a 'fresh approach'
when graphic novels were introduced to the lower secondary students. He also believed the new
texts for upper secondary; Flipping Fantastic by Jane Langford and Qwertyuiop by Vivien Alcook
were more appealing to compare with the old selections; John Steinbeck's The Pearl, Keris Mas'
Jungle Of Hope or K.S. Maniam's The Return. All these changes are in the hope to inculcate the
reading culture among students as well as improving the proficiency of Malaysian students in
English. Does this work? Personally, I believe that language and literature are inseparable. There is a
strong relationship between these two that they actually influence each other in terms of disciplines
of the language. In one of the articles I am referring to, it is said that literature is one of the most
motivating resource

Example Of Classroom Abstivation Observation In The Classroom
My classroom observation took place at Barwise Middle School during Ms. Yearly's six grade social
studies class. There were fifteen students in the class which comprised of seven girls and eight boys.
One student in the class was classified as extremely special needs, two students had autism and two
ESL learners. The racial make–up of the class was four Hispanic, two African American, two Asian,
and eight White students. The classroom was medium sized and appeared to be very limited in
moving space. There were various charts, graphic organizers and pieces of student art which
covered the walls of the classroom. Words for the week could be seen on the door when Ms. Yeary
shut the door after the last student entered. Ms. Yeary's desk was set in the top left corner of the
classroom where all students were able to see and hear her if needed. The classroom was arranged
with four tables with four chairs. Students when sitting at the tables would be facing each other. On
each table was a container with markers, pencils, blank paper, pens, and a dictionary. The class was
furnished with two reference computers, one computer on Ms. Yeary's desk, document camera, one
projector and screen and a small classroom library. There were three windows on the right side of
the classroom providing additional light and view of the playground.
Before entering the classroom, each student was greeted by Ms. Yeary with a handshake. When the
students entered, the classroom began to fill with laughter

components of a sentence structure, and having students create their own sentence. The first part of
the lesson plan will be done as a whole class and the second part will be individual work. In the
individual work students need to come up with a sentence on their own. All of the students were
sitting in their assigned spots in meeting area facing the Promethean board. The teacher was began

communication. During her writing lesson of editing a sample story, she asked students to think
about what corrections they thought needed to be made, then asked them to share their thoughts with

language acquisition, especially for her class of early intermediate language learners. The teacher of
the fourth grade class was very energetic as well. He was funny and seemed to have a great
relationship with his students. He did a great job of balancing independent work with active
learning. When I was observed his classroom, students were working on creative writing. The class
was hard at work and very quiet. About ten minutes into their writing, he asked students to stand up
with their writing paper in hand and start walking around the classroom. After a few seconds of
walking he asked students to stop and partner up with someone who was near near them. They were

Methods Of An Adult English As A Second Language ( Esl )...
Introduction: The purpose of this paper is to explore the methods are used in an Adult English as a
Second Language (ESL) classroom. I am interested in what types of activities facilitate students'
understanding, make students comfortable, and encourage student participation. I chose to
concentrate on this aspect of second language (L2) learning because as a future teacher, I believe it
is important to be mindful and use activities and interactions that appeal and are beneficial to all
students. This study made me more aware of the interactions and activities used in the classroom. In
order to narrow down the investigation, the following three research questions were formulated:
1. What methods are used in the classroom?
2. What activities are used in the classroom and what method do they align with?
3. Do students respond to some activities more than others?
Theoretical Context: There are many methods that have been formed regarding second language
acquisition. According to Brown (2014), the communicative method "emphasizes authenticity,
interaction, student–centered learning, task–based activities, and communication for real–world,
meaningful purposes (369). A main tenant of the communicative method is second language
acquisition transpires within a communicative environment. According to Brown (2014), the Total
Physical Response is a method that "relies on physical or kinesthetic movement accompanied by
language practice (382)." The main ideas of Total Physical

Essay on Feasability of Self-Assessment in ESL Classrooms
 Introduction:
Assessment is one of the crucial components of the education. Traditional exams and tests are
mostly based on materials taught in the course to meet predetermined objectives. They cannot assess
whether or not learners can apply it. To truly understand some new ideas, students need to apply it.
My experience as an English teacher provides some ideas to frame my discussion of assessment.
Although many teachers think that the scores of the exams and the tests are objective and cannot be
wrong, I think that these scores are uncertain they need to be supplemented by some other
assessments. Traditional assessments in their summative and formative forms such as tests, quizzes
or exams are often graded and returned back to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A series of self–assessments could lead the learners to monitoring progress towards specific learning
objectives.
In learner–centered curricula, learners should be encouraged to be active participants in the
assessing process rather than only being the passive test takers. Despite the fact that some teachers
may be reluctant to transfer the responsibility of assessment to their learners, but proponents of this
trend argue that there is much to be gained from it, and that the students are capable of evaluating
themselves if they are given the adequate and necessary guidance. However, self assessment is
another method of creating interactive learning atmosphere, where the students focus on applying
their knowledge.
Moreover, recent research refers to the self–assessment as an increasingly important factor of
teaching English language or any second language. According to Ian Tudor, "assessment is integral
to the teaching–learning process, and can be as learner–centered and motivation–based as any other
form of learning". Previous research was done to emphasize the positive outcomes and the
objectives of the self assessment which can be used to encourage the learners to reflect on their
learning and be aware of strengths, weaknesses and further needs. It also inspires them to set goals
on the basis of their evaluations. The procedure of checking their learning and progress through the
self assessment may help the students to develop their learning

Teaching Strategy in the Classroom
Teaching Strategies Applied Effectively in the Classroom
In a classroom, the teacher is the leader. As such, they must take into account which teaching
methods would be best to develop their students learning abilities. During my observations at New
Hyde Park Memorial High School, I was able to witness a wide array of teaching strategies. For this
paper, I will choose specific methods, and discuss how certain teachers used them effectively within
the classroom. First, I will discuss how the modeling process was used to enhance student's abilities
to learn. Modeling is a process of teaching through demonstration. Second, I will discuss how

different kinds of graphic organizers that can be used. For the purpose of this paper I will discuss the
Venn diagram I observed in Mr. Mechanic's classroom, and network trees that I observed in Mr.
Scott Colvin and Ms. Abbe Katz's classrooms. A Venn Diagram consist of two large circles with
separate topics and an intersecting middle area where the relations between ideas are written. In Mr.
Mechanic's tenth grade English class the circles focused on literary elements contained in two
poems. In the middle section, Mr. Mechanic had the students discuss the literary elements that were
found in both of these works. The use of this Venn diagram helped the students better understand
each individual section, as well as recognize the way certain elements can be used in multiple ways.
(Observe class notes 6, 8) Both Mr. Colvin, in his eleventh grade English class, and Ms. Katz, in her
ninth grade advanced English class, utilized network trees. In Mr. Colvin's class, it was used to help
examine characteristics of leadership. The tree was organized with a block in the middle, marked

Colvin then had the students answer follow up questions which further allowed them

She was very organized and made sure that every student was engaged and remained on task. What
really impressed me about the class was her easy rapport with the students. Mrs. Sandoval explained
to me that a goal she sets for herself as an educator is to build the student–teacher interrelationship,
established on trust and fairness. According to Sadker and Zittleman (2013), often the successful
teachers are the ones that enjoy managing and motivating people and are often found to have a
pretty good sense of humor. Mrs. Sandoval feels when she jokes around or is playful with the
students they respond better. She feels that it creates a more comfortable learning environment. As

Teacher Classroom Preparation and Setup for a First Grade...
Phase 1 Learning Environment
I am a believer that the environment in a classroom will not only be a place of academics, but an
environment that is inclusive to fostering personal growths as well as relationships. A classroom
should embrace diversity in a cultural and cognitive nature as well. I have envisioned my own
classroom with 20 first grade children. The layout of the classroom I have provided is what I feel
would be the way I would have the class set up for the beginning of a fall semester. As the school
year progresses I will have changes and additions to the classroom as needs to be accommodated. I
am also a believer to keeps students busy and engaged. This includes changing the seating
arrangements every two or three weeks, this keeps the students engaged in new relationships and the
dynamics of their cognitive learning with activities at a different challenge. Different students have
different things to bring to a group. The physical layout of my classroom would ideally be in groups
of four. I will ensure that all students will have the ability to face the front of the class where
instruction is held most of the time. Half of my students will be facing the front of the classroom
while the other students will still be able to face the front while having their desks at 90 degree
turned. The student who is found to be a visual processing disorder will be sitting in the front and I
will have this student sitting next to a general education student.

South Hills Elementary Observation Essay
My experience at South Hills Elementary was a pleasant one. The overall atmosphere was cheery
and bright and the kids seemed enthusiastic as I passed them in the hallway. I was in an all Spanish–
speaking kindergarten reading class. My teacher was fluent in Spanish and English. One of the main
things that impressed me was how well the children worked so independently. They all had
something to do, and they all completed their tasks. Some of the kids were listening to Spanish
music and singing along. Others were on the promethean board dragging letters to complete words.
Some students were quietly reading in their chairs while the rest of the classroom was working
around them. Another thing that impressed me was the way the teacher individually assessed each
students progress to get a feel for their current reading level. Kids would be called over or she would

I would consider the teaching method displayed in the class both of those teaching styles. The

when it was time for their individual learning time they relied heavily on the teacher to teach them
the things they practiced in their personal projects. That is why I considered it a progressivism and
essentialism class. Another thing I would compare to class is the requirement on having a teacher
who knows what they are doing. The teacher as I mentioned was very fluent in Spanish and English

My Personal Philosophy Of Classroom Management Plan
Classroom Management Plan
A well–organized classroom management plan will be effective in creating a positive classroom
environment which can help to activate students' motivations and facilitate students' learning. This
classroom management plan is designed for a Stage 4 class, Year 8–3 in Mackenzie Secondary
College.
Philosophy
In my personal philosophy of classroom management plan, the considerations about their socio–
emotional needs and support students' learning are key elements in creating a learning environment.
As a teacher, I will be responsible for creating a well–planned classroom environment. In the Social
Justice Theory, students understand they could affect others have the awareness to help regulate
their own behaviors in classrooms. However, it does not mean that students can do whatever they
like in the classroom. According to Responsible Thinking Process Model (Ford, 2008) both students
and teachers have rights of being safe in the learning environment. At this point, I will be a guide for
students and prevent misbehavior. By keeping everything positive in my classroom, students can be
actively engaged and learn more.
I will involve students in designing the classroom rules. As the rules are made, I will emphasis to
ensure they are all clear about these rules. Based on Applied Behaviour Analysis (Alberto &
Troutman, 2013) the antecedents and consequences can influence students' inappropriate
behaviours. According to previous experience, students know

2.3 A proper balance between the: task–oriented and the human relations aspects, required in every
teaching–learning situation , enables teachers to create a teaching–learning situation with a positive
atmosphere. Maintaining a balance between the structural (formal) and human relations (informal)
aspects requires a holistic approach to classroom management. The combination and integration of
these two dimensions represent the actual structure of the classroom situation, which includes all
areas of the teacher's management task. These studies revealed a clear correlation between
classroom atmosphere and pupil performance of grade 9 and grade 10 pupils in 12 secondary
schools in Ontario as follows:  Classroom atmosphere has a significant influence on pupil
performance.  Although the personal and social characteristics of pupils are important factors in
their school performance, classroom atmosphere is sometimes more important.  The psychosocial
and academic aspects of teaching are interrelated. 2

The information also allows an understanding of the students' English proficiency and their reading
level; which are important in planning and implementing instructional strategies.
I believe that all of the developmental goals listed are important for students' continued growth and
learning. These development goals will be implemented in such a way to ensure that students will be
able to develop analytical and interpretive skills in literature; develop linguistic competency;
develop listening skills, oral, and written communication skills and develop reasoning skills in the

Changing Gender Stereotypes In The ESL Classroom
I have found myself to be one of the few teachers that work in the school district I grew up in. I like
it call it, "coming full circle", and this has allowed me several opportunities to compare and contrast
my past experiences from the present. While the hallways seem smaller than they did when I was a
child, and I know that is just a figment of my imagination, one thing is for certain, the classroom has
changed. When I was young, minority students were bused to my school to promote integration, and
non–native speakers were fully immersed into English speaking classrooms. Today, we see a
naturally more diverse student population, as well as several ESL programs available to students.
Summary
This research paper will explore the changing classroom demographics in the United States within
the public school setting. In some instances, it will look at gender as well as ethnicity. It will begin
with the Federal Era, continue through the post Civil War Reconstruction Era, The Civil rights
Movement of the 1950s and '60s, and continue on to today, with future demographic predictions. It
will discuss how this impacts art education, and what issues still remain unresolved. ... Show more

Effects of School and Class Size on the Quality of...
Introduction Education is fundamental in today's modern society and is the subject of endless
debates across the United States. Recently, it has risen to the top of both state and national agendas
(Finn, 2002). One reform movement currently being debated is the effects of school and class size
on the quality of student education. Advocates of smaller classes argue students learn more when
there are fewer students in the classroom. Many studies are conducted to try to prove this theory.
Although some studies show positive results, the many failed experiments led opposers of class size
reduction to believe that there is no link among class size and student learning. (Bell, Crandall, &
Parnell, 2009). Many studies have been inconclusive, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another successful study that reinforces the findings provided by STAR is SAGE, or Student
Achievement Guarantee in Education. This was a five–year long study that began in Wisconsin in
1996 where the poverty level was at 30%. Although, SAGE targeted less than 20 schools, the
purpose of this study was to increase the academic achievement of children living in poverty. Just
like STAR, SAGE used Kindergarten to third graders and shrunk the classes to under 18 students.
Researchers concluded that small classes benefit everyone, especially disadvantaged youth. Smaller
classes allow the teacher to focus more one–on–one with a struggling student and lowered the drop–
out rate of students, significantly. In each study, it clearly showed that disadvantaged children, those
with learning disabilities or living in poverty showed greatest effects. Stunningly enough,
researchers found that students who were in a small–sized classroom in the early grades went to
college, got married, and bought houses at a higher rate than those who were in larger classrooms.
Currently in the United States, policymakers and education researchers are looking for ways to
fairly distribute resources to bridge the gap between advantaged and disadvantaged students.
(Ehrenberg, Brewer, Gamoran, & Willms, 2001).
California's Initiative The government, school districts, and more than half of United States citizens
have sponsored class size reduction programs (Finn, 2002). The issue

Currently, I am student teaching at Alfred E. Zampella PS #27 School in the district of Jersey City.
The school is located in a busy city, next to John F. Kennedy St. which is especially busy in the
morning and during rush hour. This results in several late students on a day to day basis. On the
other hand, this school is also highly accessible and as a little over a thousand students. The school
has grade levels from kindergarten to 8th grade, and has a mix of general, special, and inclusion
education classrooms. Typically, families that enroll their students into this school are of lower–
middle socio–economic class, and tend to be majority Hispanic, Indian, and African American, with
few Caucasians and Asians. This school provides a variety of special programs for their ESL
students and special need students. Students may be offered speech language pathology,
occupational therapy, physical therapy, ESL programs, reading recovery, and counseling. When

My Experience At Groveland Park Elementary
Through my time at Groveland Park Elementary I have been able to observe two classrooms that
each offer a number of students. I have been enjoying the opportunity to observe and help out in a
fourth grade class, taught by Ms. Hammes, and a second grade class taught by Mrs. Hyatt. All of the
students vary in academic levels and abilities, some having exceptionalities or needs have to use
resources that are offered by the school. I have been able to observe students with learning
disabilities, physical challenges, gifts, and language barriers. I have also been able to reach out and
gather information about another school, Medford Public School, and see how their school system
works to support students with exceptionalities. Between the two classrooms I have been able to
observe and assist with a couple of students with some learning disabilities. One of the students
whom I have had the opportunity to spend a lot of time helping happens to have ADHD. I have been
able to observe how my mentor teacher supports them while not making it appear obvious to the rest
of the class that someone is being singled out. She is able to do this by keeping the student's desk
relatively close to her own desk throughout every new seating arrangement that she has. Another
way that she makes sure he is on task and supported is by checking on him regularly and then also
checking on other students in the class to in a way mask that she was mainly checking on a certain

According to our textbook Student teaching, "A quality program is one that exceeds rather than
meets minimum standards for licensure." To help us determine if a preschool classroom/program
provides quality and to help us understand what quality means we were asked to evaluate and
compare two preschool classrooms using the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale. The
classrooms I chose to evaluate and compare using the ECERS evaluation tool were the 4year old
classroom at Naples Christian Academy and the 4 year old classroom at The Learning Center. Below
is my comparison of both classrooms using the ECERS evaluation tool. Naples Christian Academy,
as discussed before, serves children from pre–k3 to 8th grade. The Learning Center serves children
from age 2 to 5 years old. According to the PAS evaluations that I did for course EEC 4941, Naples
Christian Academy and The Learning Center provide a quality program for children and families.
After observing both 4 year old classrooms for two days, I was able to determine whether or not
both 4 year old classrooms provide quality also. Naples Christian Academy scored an average score
of 6.93on the ECERS and The Learning Center scored an average score of 6.58 on the ECERS. The
first section I evaluated at both locations was space and furnishings. Naples Christian Academy
scores a 7 and The Learning Center scored a 6.25. The Learning Center classroom did not have a

My Perception Of Esl Students And The Esl Class
Over the summer, completing all the modules, my perception of the ESL students and the ESL class
itself would be a small class of around eighteen to twenty students all of which were freshmen. In
our training we always had to keep in mind of the worst case scenarios when we are assigned class
of students who may be the students who don't come to class on time and get their work done and
how we would have to decide what to do to help the students get back on track in case it actually
happens. The first week and a half especially the first class gave me quite a surprise. I found out
there were graduate students in the classroom meaning I would be working with students older than
I am which I never thought about before. I was very surprised by the age range in our classroom. We
had students age ranging from seventeen to thirty–seven. However, the class size gradually got
smaller making it easier to keep track of their work progress. Knowing I will be working with all
international students for the first time, I believe that it was very crucial to ensure the students felt
welcome here.
First impressions were very important especially when it was their first few months living in
America in general. We were among the first few Americans they meet. A few difficulties arose at
the beginning of the semester of which I had expected would happen with some of the students. It
was very difficult facilitating discussions when students don't do their reading assignments. There

General Observation Notes On The Classroom Room Essay
General observation notes: The student being observed is seated in the middle of the classroom
room. The desks are arranged in an "L" shape and there are eight "L" shape arrangements in the
classroom. This particular student sits at the end of the "L" shape, specifically close to the center of
the classroom aisle. There are two eighth grade boys and one eighth grade girl also sitting at this "L"
shape desk arrangement. There are an unknown number of students with IEPs, ESLs, and 504s
student plans in the class. There are a total of nineteen students in the class.
The observer is sitting in an empty student desk at the far southeast corner of the classroom. In this
corner location, the observer can see the entire student's body, as well as the student's face. While
the student being observed knows the observer, he was unaware of the reason or intent behind this
visit to the classroom.
10:49am The teacher directed students to open their agendas to this week. He directed the students
to write in upcoming quiz and project due dates. These dates were also listed on the board, and the
teacher pointed to the dates as he discussed them with more detail. This student seemed to be
following directions. He was actively writing in his planner and looked on occasion at the board
appearing to double check dates. Additionally, the student did briefly break into a giggle after the
teacher made a joke regarding studying. Then, the student interrupted the teacher by blurting out

My First Thoughts Of Buffalo State
My first thoughts of Buffalo State, I had many different ideas on what I should expect. First I was
very excited to step foot in a place that I never been. I love experiencing new places. Considering I
never been to the Buffalo State college or even orientation I expected the best. I figured the campus
be beautiful and very spacy. I researched facts about Buffalo State and I was very surprised to see
how many students attended. I love the fact that the college presented a lot of diversity. I also
expected that the college life would be very social since I asked the former students of Buffalo State
about it. Of course I was a little nervous that there was a little chance that it May not be anything
close to what I expected. The helping hands on the college life I expected would be top notch since
there were so many students living on campus. When I received the letter that I would be attending
the EOP program which I applied for I was very excited. I wasn't really sure exactly what EOP
actually was but I hoped for the best. My mom gave me a brief description on what the program
was. I didn't like the fact that it was three weeks long and the first thing that came to my mind when
I heard that was my summer was coming to an end quite early. I didn't think too negative about it

Why Technology Is Important
Why is Technology Important in K–12 Education?
Marlene Segal
It seems odd to me to write a paper about the importance of technology in education. While there
may still be skeptics within the field of education, I would imagine that most people would agree
that a technology rich environment enhances a child's education at least to some degree. Even
teachers who are reluctant to infuse technology into their lesson plans would have to see the merit of
students using technology consistently in classrooms. Most of the recent research articles I've read
on technology and classroom learning conclude not only that there is an increase in student
achievement in technology rich classroom environments, but also an increase in student ... Show

Furthermore, the internet provides my student with up to date information. Textbooks typically get
replaced every ten years or so. Many of the textbooks available in my classroom still show the
Soviet Union and East and West Germany. However, because we are a laptop program with wireless
internet connection, we're able to keep up with changing world borders. Earlier this semester, as my

oh... I logged on to the internet and in two minutes had a website which publishes the novel (free of

we went to the streets of turn of the century Chicago. Upon further investigation, I discovered that
most books that are used in high school literature classes which have a copyright 70 years old or
older are published on the internet. The ability to engage students in many different types of
activities is another advantage of technology in the classroom. There is an enormous selection of

Trust in Freedom Writers and Stand and Deliver
Both Erin Gruwell in Freedom Writers and Jamie Esclante in Stand and Deliver faced students stuck
in low–income backgrounds and neighborhoods of crime. Despite the low achievement of these
students, both teachers were able to foster a mastery of a subject to their students. Even though the
subjects of English and math are extremely different, one method united both teachers and allowed
them to teach their students effectively– trust. Erin and Jamie were successful because of the trust
they put in their students. In both Erin's and Jamie's school, there was a fundamental distrust of the
students by the faculty and a fundamental distrust of the faculty by the students. This environment
led to a disconnect between the faculty's methods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finally, the trust placed in the students allowed both Erin and Jamie to "raise the bar" of their
expectations. By trusting the students are capable and willing to learn in the right environment, both
teachers avoided the trap of teaching remedial methods that seem to match their level of
comprehension and understanding. Instead, both teachers trusted that their students had a greater
capacity to learn than what the school system gave them credit for. It was this trust in the students
that allowed both Erin and Jamie to start teaching information that was previously seen as
impossible for those students to comprehend correctly and adequately. It was this trust in the
students by Erin and Jamie that allowed them to raise the bar. Both teachers expected more of their
students than the other teachers in the school, but students generally seen as lazy and apathetic
towards school meet those expectations against conventional wisdom. The reason for this is that
while raising the bar, both teachers trusted that their students would reach it. Other teachers could
have raised the bar, but because of the lack of trust between the teacher and the students, the
teachers would not expect anything, thus the students wouldn't do anything. Adding the element of
trust to the equation made the students realize that they were expected and trusted to meet

My Classroom Observation
My classroom observation took place at the Barwise Middle School during Ms. Yearly's sixth grade
social studies class. There were fifteen students in the class which comprised of seven girls and eight
boys. One student in the class was classified as special needs, two students had autism and two ESL
learners. The racial make–up of the class was four Hispanic, two African Americans, two Asian, and
eight White students. The classroom was medium sized and appeared to be very limited in moving
space. There were various charts, graphic organizers, and pieces of student art which covered the
walls of the classroom. Words for the week could be seen on the door when Ms. Yeary shut the door
after the last student entered. Ms. Yeary's desk was set in the top left corner of the classroom where
all students were able to see and hear her if needed. The classroom was arranged with four tables
with four chairs each. When sitting at the tables, the students faced each other. On each table was a
container with markers, pencils, blank paper, pens, and a dictionary. The class was furnished with
two reference computers, one computer on Ms. Yeary's desk, document camera, one projector and
screen and a small classroom library. There were three windows on the right side of the classroom,
providing additional light and a view of the playground.
Before entering the classroom, each student was greeted by Ms. Yeary with a handshake. When the

My Role During Observations By Ms. Davenport
My role during observations
During these two sessions, I was primarily observing the lessons taught by Ms. Davenport. During
independent practice, I was walking around the classroom and examining student work and assisting
students by answering their questions about the math problems.
Mathematical practices observed
 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
The students were given problems following group instruction and were dismissed to independent
practice. During both my visits the students were finding strategies that would help them with the
problem. This is the point at which I saw frustration among students as they persevered with the
problems.
 Reason abstractly and quantitatively
I observed students conceptualizing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the questions was, "I have 50 cents in my pocket. I only have nickels in my pocket. How
many nickels do I have?"
 Look for and make use of structure
A few students made connections about patterns when they were skip counting and could understand
that their number stings of fives or tens are repeated addition. They made flash cards out of long
strips of paper for twos, fives and tens.
Mathematical practices that could have been included.
 Use appropriate tools strategically
Given the difficulty a handful of the students were having with their independent practice problems,
this would have been an appropriate opportunity to bring out manipulatives such as Unifix Cubes or
base ten blocks. Even though every student was using a paper 100's chart this was still confusing for
some.
What was interesting.
What is interesting is the fact that a few of these students are struggling with number sense halfway
through second grade. I was surprised that they were not further along in their studies, but I am
probably making unfair comparisons in relation to where my son was at the same age. It made it
much clearer for me the kinds of struggles I will face as a classroom teacher with students of wide
and varying abilities.

The Importance Of Early Reading Strategies In Education
Rationale While primary grade, general classroom, teachers are keenly aware of the importance of
early literacy instruction, with increasing class sizes and diverse populations of students in our
classrooms, teachers find it difficult to recognize which strategies are most effective for instruction
especially for struggling readers. What's more, teachers may not fully comprehend the implications
of students struggling at such an early stage of literacy acquisition and may assume at some point
students will "catch up" with peers. However, as research indicates, "...there is evidence that
children's early reading skills in preschool and early elementary school are related to reading skills
and achievement later in elementary, middle and high school." (Cunningham & Stanovich, 1997;
Storch & Whitehurst, 2002, as cited in Baroody & Diamond, 2016). Therefore, it is imperative
educators intervene as early as possible with effective literacy instruction strategies to engage,
motivate and support developing readers. The research presented below provides insight into
evidence–based approaches including, among others, grouping strategies, individualized instruction,
and technology support along with other intervention strategies for effective, early literacy
instruction for struggling learners. Additionally, the studies support the idea of establishing
systematic, differentiated, engaging and positive reading experiences which will provide a solid
foundation designed for reading

quantitative research design. This study was conducted within five different ESL schools in
Colombo district which is located in the Western Province of Sri Lanka.

(Figure 2) This module consists of the barriers that affect technology adoption. This model will be
further developed in order to remove the barriers of technology integration and provide support to
integrate technology into ESL curriculum. Therefore this model will be suitable for integrating
technology in Sri Lankan ESL context.
Implementing the above proposed model will require few steps. The first step is to identify the
necessary plans to provide computers to schools. Second step is Sri Lankan policy makers need to
be aware of providing necessary training for teachers to be familiar with classroom technology. Not
only computer education, but also teachers' pedagogical training is important to motivate the
teachers to incorporate technology into pedagogy.
A future study would be important to consider the impact each of the above factors has on
educational planning. Future researchers must also examine these particular barriers. Further
research would be needed to determine whether the perceived changes can be quantified to increase
student engagement and understanding. Future research may want to explore teachers' access to, not
only the technology, but also to opportunities for professional development focused on integrating

Pros And Cons Of Technology In Classrooms

  • 1. Pros and Cons of Technology in Classrooms For years, new technologies have been arising and improving drastically. To some generations technology is nothing but foreign to them. Children these days are so familiar with how to use technology; they almost start to learn after they start walking. So many people are abusing technology by overusing it and even some, becoming addicted. If technology is going to be used, it should have a positive purpose behind it. Throughout the past five years technology has become a main focus in the classroom and schools. Teachers are beginning to use computers, iPads etc. to help teach every grade and age. It has become so over welling that it could be believed that with all this technology, there is no point to have a teacher. Teachers and schools ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Computers are beginning to take on the role of teachers. This way of teaching is often known as a "flipped classroom". It has become a very common thing for a teacher to be using a computer or powerpoint during class. Along with technology progressing so are schools. Many schools are engaging students of all ages into technologies as a different approach to learning. Almost all students in today generations are very used to this. (Pilgrim 1–6) Technology in schools has very many positive aspects that are beneficial. Along with the students, teachers are also learning how to use different technologies. Teachers are using technology to their advantage. Computers, iPods, cell phones and iPads have become so familiar to children in this generation. They find it more interesting to pay attention to something on a smart board or computer than an old school chalk board. In 2013, a San Francisco based company created a software called ClassDojo. "Class Dojo is a free classroom behavior management tool that allows teachers to provide on–time feedback to students regarding individual and group behavior. The program, which can be operated from a computer or mobile device, makes it simple to keep a class motivated and focused by providing students with instant feedback (positive or negative) in class by awarding or subtracting points for specific behaviors" (Vivian 4). Tools like ClassDojo makes younger students ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Life Milestones : My Life Compared To A Travel Book My life can be compared to a travel book. It is full of pages and chapters about places and significant milestones that took me to where I am right now. Some chapters are similar to festivals in Spain and some can be compared to the depressing, dirty and chaotic streets of Manila. This paper will focus on life milestones that made a significant impact towards my literary development. It will showcase important moments of my childhood, prepubescent and young adult life that will have an effect towards my future as a teacher. The first pages began to unfold Christmas day of 1993 and I was three years old. My mother has gifted me the first book I have remembered reading. The cover is a shade of baby pink with animals and beautiful flowers in the cover. It was heavy and the smell of the brand–new book lingered my room for days. It was such an experience! It is full of colorful illustrations that made it seem like the drawings were jumping out of the page and were alive. It was exhilarating! Every night my mother's voice takes a different persona as she reads the different characters in the book. Her animated expressions gave life to characters such as the Cinderella, Red Riding hood, Snow White, and Belle. I looked forward to reading rather than seeing it as a chore or as an exercise. As I grew a little older, she started reading the pink book with me rather than just to me. It started from sounding letters and soon enough I am forming my first worlds. Eventually, she just ... • 5. My Second Grade Class Atp.s 45 Many classrooms today are comprised of different children with different learning styles. Each class is unique and different in their own way. All classrooms have students that come from different communities, families, cultures, and traditions. P.S. 45 is a title one school which means that the majority of the students live in a household of low income families. In this classroom, approximately 90% of the students attending reside in low–income neighborhoods. While the label of title one indicates that the state is providing the resources for students to thrive, it can also indicate that there is a lot of pressure placed on the students to do well. My third grade class at P.S 45 is an ICT class where half of the students are low–functioning and half of the students are general education. My classroom contains 29 children, 15 boys and 14 girls of mixed heritages. The majority of my students are Hispanic and African American; however, there are a few students who are Caucasian and Asian, too. The class consists of many students who have an impulsive tendency of constantly getting out of their seats. When this happens, it breaks the focus of other students and disrupts the lesson. Most students come ready to learn, but some of the students lack focus due to insufficient sleep and nutrition. Some students are more skilled than others; however, most of the class is struggling academically. My class requires special and differentiated instruction. Twelve students in this class ... • 7. Texting in Class Is Rampant Crafting Draft 1 21 April 2014 Cellphones are most common in society. The ease of access allows us to have the world at our fingertips 24 hours a day and we never have to unplug. We can surf the web, book a flight, check the weather, and message a friend 1000 miles away without leaving our bed. Texting has fast become the preferred form of communication for young adults; however, students need to be dissuaded from texting during class because of the result in loss of valuable class time, lack of effective communication skills, and consistent use of improper English leading to a negative impact on students' learning. Maryellen Weimer, PhD recently posted in Teacher Professor Blog "most students don't multi–task ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lack of comprehension and poor course work will result in a lower grade average. Students may become frustrated and give up easily. Using texting as a quicker and more efficient form of communication takes the emotional connection out of the equation. It allows us to not be physically near the recipient or to take responsibility for miscommunications that lead to hurt feelings. While texting, students do not need to make eye contact with their recipient or learn to read their body language. In addition, there is no need to learn the art of persuasive argument or exchanging and building on ideas. This is not only harming students in the classroom, but can have negative effects when entering the workforce. After leaving college, students hope to land a job in their field of expertise. In the workforce, teams are a diverse collection of persons – all ages and different cultures. Texting may be acceptable in some situations, but there is still a great need for face to face interactions. We learn how to become more comfortable meeting new people and interviewing for jobs. There is nothing wrong the light banter between friends that texting can provide, but the conversation is not necessarily deep. Texting allows us to stay in touch with others in a most efficient way. We type a quick text, hit send, and in a matter of seconds our recipient has our text. Receiving a text is fast, but typing out a clear, concise ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. What I Learned To Write And Read In The ESL Classroom At the age of fifteen, my father brought me to the United States, and here I began my studies in the ninth grade of high school. I learned English during high school and community college, but for me it was not very easy to learn English and eventually I still have difficulty to write well or sometimes to speak English. For three years of high school I attended classes that were entirely in English and just one ESL class, in fact, in my last year of high school, I did not receive any class that will help me with the language acquisition. My math, science, and social studies teachers focused more on teaching their subject, then helping me to understand it. Unfortunately, at that time I still did not speak fluent English. As a result of that I felt lost and confused because I did not understand what the teachers were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As well, because I feel that I did not received the adequate help from my content–area teachers, in other words, they expected me to comprehend, and know how write and read in English perfectly. In my perspective second language students fell behind in their academics, because of the need of teachers that are committed to teach not only their subject area, but to help students master their reading, writing, vocabulary and language proficiency. This problem leads ELL students to drop out of school, low self–esteem, and insecurity. For my point of view and experience some educators are not trained to deal with these kinds of situations. They are not trained properly, and do not have the skills to teach ELLs. As well, in some situations, some teachers do not even bother to teach ELLs, because they do not want to waste their time on them. I more than willing to help students that are going through the same situations that I went through. ELLs, in particular, need thoughtful and explicit instructional support to learn the disciplinary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Classroom Observation Classroom observation is a main approach of teaching research. Scholars or researchers use video to record the real whole class and observe the teachers and students' actions, words and the efficiency in the class. Though the observation, they analyze what approach is more suitable. This paper will select video 5 and video 3 as the material to do the classroom observation. Different aspects such as teachers' responds, questions, instructions notes and students' behavior will be addressed to analyze the efficacy of this class. 2. Brief introduction of video 3 The theme of english lesson in Video 3 is job interview with a large number of students, nearly as many as fifty, who are native Chinese teenagers while teacher may be a native English speakers( at least good at English). Because of the education system in China, most of the Chinese students study English from Grade 3 in primary school, who already have some basic English vocabulary and grammar storage like simple greeting, food, verbs about movement and so on though not mastery in them. Meanwhile, They are capable of making simple sentence. Therefore, teacher began to teach students some English skills, like listening, in middle school. The lesson is divided into three parts: pre–listening, while listening, post–listening. In the pre–listening part, this teacher lead students review some details about the listening transcript. • 13. Pedagogy Of The Oppressed Analysis Mid–Term Exam Freire's words "True dialogue cannot exist unless the dialoguers engage in critical thinking" (Freire, 1970/1993, p.92). Here, the author emphasizes how imperative critical thinking is for dialoguers in order to have a real conversation. In his book Pedagogy of the Oppressed, he elaborates the meaning of critical thinking. According to what he said, when there is an agreement between the world and people without separating them, it is critical thinking. Moreover, if an individual believes that everything around her is not an unchangeable fact, but a process that is constantly changing, that is also called critical thinking. Additionally, Freire states that a process is described as critical thinking if a person takes his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, before studying in Seattle Central College, expressing my opinions was one of the hardest tasks for me to do. However, now it becomes very interesting. That is why problem–posing approach is one of Freire's best approaches that will be applied in my classroom in the future. If an ESL teacher uses this method, her students will guarantee their freedom in choosing how and what exactly they want to learn in English. When I was in middle school, my English teacher gave us a passage about electricity and we were required to understand it and memorize its vocabulary. I still do not get why we had to read about that topic! We were not electrical engineers neither majoring in electronic engineering. We were just teenagers who wanted to learn how to make everyday conversation in English. It would be more entertaining if the text was about something teenagers like, such as music or shopping. If I were the teacher, I would first ask my students to tell me about their favorite topics. Then, I would l choose the passages that would be taught in the class depending on their favorites. This would encourage them to participate in the class, share their prior knowledge and experiences, and learn from each other. All in all, Freire emphasizes the importance of dialogue in creating a genuine environment for learning. Yet, critical thinking should be engaged by conversation parties. ... • 15. Observation Of Mrs. Trimble In The ESL Classroom The classroom that I observed was in Kindergarten at Hopkins Elementary in Kirby, Texas. The classroom consisted of 16 students; 12 fluent in Spanish and 4 fluent in English. The ESL level is a Dual language of 90/10. English is used to reinforce when needed and continuously throughout the day. Mrs. Trimble had a few students that spoke both languages coming into the classroom but needed additional learning. Her instruction within the classroom was verbal, written, and visual aids. I will be covering the following topics; were the students aware of class language and content objectives, how did Mrs. Trimble instruct the content and language objectives, types of student group configurations used, and how did she accommodate for different ELP levels? When I first arrived all of the students sat at the carpet awaiting the teacher. I could see that the students were aware of the class language and content objectives from the start. The teacher started off the day using Spanish for math and ELA and after lunch she went into using English for science and social studies. She had a few students that were ESL and also had attention deficit disorder that she would work on one–on–one with. The content concepts are appropriate for this age and educational background. • 17. The Building Blocks Of Learning Emily Whitmer Rose Glasser EDTP 201 10/28/16 Ethnography: The Building Blocks of Learning I remember my first day going to a school to observe. It felt more inquiring, rather than being obligated to go to school just because I had to, like the state required us to. Ever since I have been given two field placements, I have been increasingly interested in the teaching profession. My first field placement has been an eye opener for all other rolls in a school. It has showed me just how important other rolls are in a school, and how they can affect and tie into how a student does in a classroom. Having two field placements has given me a new outlook on the classroom environment, curriculum, and what goes on behind the scenes in the teaching profession. In my second field placement, which is what this ethnography will evolve around, I was placed at Blue Lick Elementary School (right next to Knight Middle School). Blue Lick Elementary School collaborates with Knight Middle School, to ease the transition to 6th grade. This school is located in Heritage Creek, which is also close to my first placement, Fairdale High School. The population in this neighborhood is low–income. There are 480 students and the student teacher ratio is 16:1. Blue Lick Elementary School is a public co–ed school and accepts grades pre–kindergarten to 5th grade. At Blue Lick Elementary School, 66% of the students are white. The next majority of the students are black, which is 25% on a pie chart. Only 2% of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Can Literature Be Taught in the ESL Classroom Of all the issues arise in the literary world, my focus would be on the fundamental issue of whether literature can be taught in the ESL classroom or not. It had become a forefront debate for so long that it remained a perplexing concern among educators. Some educators might think that English should be mastered first before introducing the literature but some will say literature is the one that actually can enhance the language mastery. In Malaysia, the changing of policy in teaching literature in ESL classroom is obviously seen. In The Star, (Wednesday, April 28, 2010), Dr Mohamad Abu Bakar, from Education Ministry Curriculum's Development Centre said that it was a 'fresh approach' when graphic novels were introduced to the lower secondary students. He also believed the new texts for upper secondary; Flipping Fantastic by Jane Langford and Qwertyuiop by Vivien Alcook were more appealing to compare with the old selections; John Steinbeck's The Pearl, Keris Mas' Jungle Of Hope or K.S. Maniam's The Return. All these changes are in the hope to inculcate the reading culture among students as well as improving the proficiency of Malaysian students in English. Does this work? Personally, I believe that language and literature are inseparable. There is a strong relationship between these two that they actually influence each other in terms of disciplines of the language. In one of the articles I am referring to, it is said that literature is one of the most motivating resource ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Example Of Classroom Abstivation Observation In The Classroom My classroom observation took place at Barwise Middle School during Ms. Yearly's six grade social studies class. There were fifteen students in the class which comprised of seven girls and eight boys. One student in the class was classified as extremely special needs, two students had autism and two ESL learners. The racial make–up of the class was four Hispanic, two African American, two Asian, and eight White students. The classroom was medium sized and appeared to be very limited in moving space. There were various charts, graphic organizers and pieces of student art which covered the walls of the classroom. Words for the week could be seen on the door when Ms. Yeary shut the door after the last student entered. Ms. Yeary's desk was set in the top left corner of the classroom where all students were able to see and hear her if needed. The classroom was arranged with four tables with four chairs. Students when sitting at the tables would be facing each other. On each table was a container with markers, pencils, blank paper, pens, and a dictionary. The class was furnished with two reference computers, one computer on Ms. Yeary's desk, document camera, one projector and screen and a small classroom library. There were three windows on the right side of the classroom providing additional light and view of the playground. The first part of the lesson plan will be done as a whole class and the second part will be individual work. In the individual work students need to come up with a sentence on their own. All of the students were sitting in their assigned spots in meeting area facing the Promethean board. The teacher was began by doing sentence modeling using the Promethean board. Introduction: The purpose of this paper is to explore the methods are used in an Adult English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom. I am interested in what types of activities facilitate students' understanding, make students comfortable, and encourage student participation. I chose to concentrate on this aspect of second language (L2) learning because as a future teacher, I believe it is important to be mindful and use activities and interactions that appeal and are beneficial to all students. This study made me more aware of the interactions and activities used in the classroom. In order to narrow down the investigation, the following three research questions were formulated: 1. What methods are used in the classroom? 2. What activities are used in the classroom and what method do they align with? 3. Do students respond to some activities more than others? Theoretical Context: There are many methods that have been formed regarding second language acquisition. According to Brown (2014), the communicative method "emphasizes authenticity, interaction, student–centered learning, task–based activities, and communication for real–world, meaningful purposes (369). A main tenant of the communicative method is second language acquisition transpires within a communicative environment. • 31. Essay on Feasability of Self-Assessment in ESL Classrooms  Introduction: Assessment is one of the crucial components of the education. Traditional exams and tests are mostly based on materials taught in the course to meet predetermined objectives. They cannot assess whether or not learners can apply it. To truly understand some new ideas, students need to apply it. My experience as an English teacher provides some ideas to frame my discussion of assessment. Although many teachers think that the scores of the exams and the tests are objective and cannot be wrong, I think that these scores are uncertain they need to be supplemented by some other assessments. Traditional assessments in their summative and formative forms such as tests, quizzes or exams are often graded and returned back to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A series of self–assessments could lead the learners to monitoring progress towards specific learning objectives. In learner–centered curricula, learners should be encouraged to be active participants in the assessing process rather than only being the passive test takers. Despite the fact that some teachers may be reluctant to transfer the responsibility of assessment to their learners, but proponents of this trend argue that there is much to be gained from it, and that the students are capable of evaluating themselves if they are given the adequate and necessary guidance. However, self assessment is another method of creating interactive learning atmosphere, where the students focus on applying their knowledge. Moreover, recent research refers to the self–assessment as an increasingly important factor of teaching English language or any second language. According to Ian Tudor, "assessment is integral to the teaching–learning process, and can be as learner–centered and motivation–based as any other form of learning". Previous research was done to emphasize the positive outcomes and the objectives of the self assessment which can be used to encourage the learners to reflect on their learning and be aware of strengths, weaknesses and further needs. It also inspires them to set goals on the basis of their evaluations. The procedure of checking their learning and progress through the self assessment may help the students to develop their learning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Phase 1 Learning Environment I am a believer that the environment in a classroom will not only be a place of academics, but an environment that is inclusive to fostering personal growths as well as relationships. A classroom should embrace diversity in a cultural and cognitive nature as well. I have envisioned my own classroom with 20 first grade children. The layout of the classroom I have provided is what I feel would be the way I would have the class set up for the beginning of a fall semester. As the school year progresses I will have changes and additions to the classroom as needs to be accommodated. I am also a believer to keeps students busy and engaged. This includes changing the seating arrangements every two or three weeks, this keeps the students engaged in new relationships and the dynamics of their cognitive learning with activities at a different challenge. Different students have different things to bring to a group. The physical layout of my classroom would ideally be in groups of four. I will ensure that all students will have the ability to face the front of the class where instruction is held most of the time. Half of my students will be facing the front of the classroom while the other students will still be able to face the front while having their desks at 90 degree turned. The student who is found to be a visual processing disorder will be sitting in the front and I will have this student sitting next to a general education student. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The overall atmosphere was cheery and bright and the kids seemed enthusiastic as I passed them in the hallway. I was in an all Spanish– speaking kindergarten reading class. Others were on the promethean board dragging letters to complete words. Some students were quietly reading in their chairs while the rest of the classroom was working around them. Another thing that impressed me was the way the teacher individually assessed each students progress to get a feel for their current reading level. My Personal Philosophy Of Classroom Management Plan Classroom Management Plan A well–organized classroom management plan will be effective in creating a positive classroom environment which can help to activate students' motivations and facilitate students' learning. This classroom management plan is designed for a Stage 4 class, Year 8–3 in Mackenzie Secondary College. Philosophy In my personal philosophy of classroom management plan, the considerations about their socio– emotional needs and support students' learning are key elements in creating a learning environment. As a teacher, I will be responsible for creating a well–planned classroom environment. In the Social Justice Theory, students understand they could affect others have the awareness to help regulate their own behaviors in classrooms. However, it does not mean that students can do whatever they like in the classroom. According to Responsible Thinking Process Model (Ford, 2008) both students and teachers have rights of being safe in the learning environment. At this point, I will be a guide for students and prevent misbehavior. By keeping everything positive in my classroom, students can be actively engaged and learn more. I will involve students in designing the classroom rules. As the rules are made, I will emphasis to ensure they are all clear about these rules. Recently, it has risen to the top of both state and national agendas (Finn, 2002). One reform movement currently being debated is the effects of school and class size on the quality of student education. Advocates of smaller classes argue students learn more when there are fewer students in the classroom. Many studies are conducted to try to prove this theory. Although some studies show positive results, the many failed experiments led opposers of class size reduction to believe that there is no link among class size and student learning. Another successful study that reinforces the findings provided by STAR is SAGE, or Student Achievement Guarantee in Education. This was a five–year long study that began in Wisconsin in 1996 where the poverty level was at 30%. Although, SAGE targeted less than 20 schools, the purpose of this study was to increase the academic achievement of children living in poverty. Just like STAR, SAGE used Kindergarten to third graders and shrunk the classes to under 18 students. Researchers concluded that small classes benefit everyone, especially disadvantaged youth. Smaller classes allow the teacher to focus more one–on–one with a struggling student and lowered the drop– out rate of students, significantly. In each study, it clearly showed that disadvantaged children, those with learning disabilities or living in poverty showed greatest effects. Stunningly enough, researchers found that students who were in a small–sized classroom in the early grades went to college, got married, and bought houses at a higher rate than those who were in larger classrooms. Currently in the United States, policymakers and education researchers are looking for ways to fairly distribute resources to bridge the gap between advantaged and disadvantaged students. In our training we always had to keep in mind of the worst case scenarios when we are assigned class of students who may be the students who don't come to class on time and get their work done and how we would have to decide what to do to help the students get back on track in case it actually happens. The first week and a half especially the first class gave me quite a surprise. I found out there were graduate students in the classroom meaning I would be working with students older than I am which I never thought about before. I was very surprised by the age range in our classroom. We had students age ranging from seventeen to thirty–seven. However, the class size gradually got smaller making it easier to keep track of their work progress. Knowing I will be working with all international students for the first time, I believe that it was very crucial to ensure the students felt welcome here. First impressions were very important especially when it was their first few months living in America in general. We were among the first few Americans they meet. A few difficulties arose at the beginning of the semester of which I had expected would happen with some of the students. It was very difficult facilitating discussions when students don't do their reading assignments. There will always ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 64. General Observation Notes On The Classroom Room Essay General observation notes: The student being observed is seated in the middle of the classroom room. The desks are arranged in an "L" shape and there are eight "L" shape arrangements in the classroom. This particular student sits at the end of the "L" shape, specifically close to the center of the classroom aisle. There are two eighth grade boys and one eighth grade girl also sitting at this "L" shape desk arrangement. There are an unknown number of students with IEPs, ESLs, and 504s student plans in the class. There are a total of nineteen students in the class. The observer is sitting in an empty student desk at the far southeast corner of the classroom. In this corner location, the observer can see the entire student's body, as well as the student's face. While the student being observed knows the observer, he was unaware of the reason or intent behind this visit to the classroom. 10:49am The teacher directed students to open their agendas to this week. He directed the students to write in upcoming quiz and project due dates. These dates were also listed on the board, and the teacher pointed to the dates as he discussed them with more detail. This student seemed to be following directions. He was actively writing in his planner and looked on occasion at the board appearing to double check dates. Additionally, the student did briefly break into a giggle after the teacher made a joke regarding studying. Then, the student interrupted the teacher by blurting out ... • 66. My First Thoughts Of Buffalo State My first thoughts of Buffalo State, I had many different ideas on what I should expect. First I was very excited to step foot in a place that I never been. I love experiencing new places. Considering I never been to the Buffalo State college or even orientation I expected the best. I figured the campus be beautiful and very spacy. I researched facts about Buffalo State and I was very surprised to see how many students attended. I love the fact that the college presented a lot of diversity. I also expected that the college life would be very social since I asked the former students of Buffalo State about it. Of course I was a little nervous that there was a little chance that it May not be anything close to what I expected. The helping hands on the college life I expected would be top notch since there were so many students living on campus. When I received the letter that I would be attending the EOP program which I applied for I was very excited. I wasn't really sure exactly what EOP actually was but I hoped for the best. My mom gave me a brief description on what the program was. I didn't like the fact that it was three weeks long and the first thing that came to my mind when I heard that was my summer was coming to an end quite early. I didn't think too negative about it but I hoped that it gave me all the tips I needed to know about the college and the college life on campus. I like to think positive and expect positive because it's only right in my mind. When I step ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. Why Technology Is Important Why is Technology Important in K–12 Education? Marlene Segal It seems odd to me to write a paper about the importance of technology in education. While there may still be skeptics within the field of education, I would imagine that most people would agree that a technology rich environment enhances a child's education at least to some degree. Even teachers who are reluctant to infuse technology into their lesson plans would have to see the merit of students using technology consistently in classrooms. Most of the recent research articles I've read on technology and classroom learning conclude not only that there is an increase in student achievement in technology rich classroom environments, but also an increase in student ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, the internet provides my student with up to date information. Textbooks typically get replaced every ten years or so. Many of the textbooks available in my classroom still show the Soviet Union and East and West Germany. However, because we are a laptop program with wireless internet connection, we're able to keep up with changing world borders. Earlier this semester, as my class started reading The Jungle, I realized I didn't have enough copies of novel to go around. Uh oh... I logged on to the internet and in two minutes had a website which publishes the novel (free of charge!). The site separates the novel into chapters, and with a click on the link to chapter one, off we went to the streets of turn of the century Chicago. Upon further investigation, I discovered that most books that are used in high school literature classes which have a copyright 70 years old or older are published on the internet. The ability to engage students in many different types of activities is another advantage of technology in the classroom. There is an enormous selection of educational software available across all content areas. There is an abundance of software available to download at no cost. Trust in Freedom Writers and Stand and Deliver Both Erin Gruwell in Freedom Writers and Jamie Esclante in Stand and Deliver faced students stuck in low–income backgrounds and neighborhoods of crime. Despite the low achievement of these students, both teachers were able to foster a mastery of a subject to their students. Even though the subjects of English and math are extremely different, one method united both teachers and allowed them to teach their students effectively– trust. Erin and Jamie were successful because of the trust they put in their students. In both Erin's and Jamie's school, there was a fundamental distrust of the students by the faculty and a fundamental distrust of the faculty by the students. This environment led to a disconnect between the faculty's methods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Finally, the trust placed in the students allowed both Erin and Jamie to "raise the bar" of their expectations. By trusting the students are capable and willing to learn in the right environment, both teachers avoided the trap of teaching remedial methods that seem to match their level of comprehension and understanding. Instead, both teachers trusted that their students had a greater capacity to learn than what the school system gave them credit for. It was this trust in the students that allowed both Erin and Jamie to start teaching information that was previously seen as impossible for those students to comprehend correctly and adequately. It was this trust in the students by Erin and Jamie that allowed them to raise the bar. Both teachers expected more of their students than the other teachers in the school, but students generally seen as lazy and apathetic towards school meet those expectations against conventional wisdom. The reason for this is that while raising the bar, both teachers trusted that their students would reach it. Other teachers could have raised the bar, but because of the lack of trust between the teacher and the students, the teachers would not expect anything, thus the students wouldn't do anything. Adding the element of trust to the equation made the students realize that they were expected and trusted to meet ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. My Classroom Observation My classroom observation took place at the Barwise Middle School during Ms. Yearly's sixth grade social studies class. There were fifteen students in the class which comprised of seven girls and eight boys. One student in the class was classified as special needs, two students had autism and two ESL learners. The racial make–up of the class was four Hispanic, two African Americans, two Asian, and eight White students. The classroom was medium sized and appeared to be very limited in moving space. There were various charts, graphic organizers, and pieces of student art which covered the walls of the classroom. Words for the week could be seen on the door when Ms. Yeary shut the door after the last student entered. Ms. Yeary's desk was set in the top left corner of the classroom where all students were able to see and hear her if needed. The classroom was arranged with four tables with four chairs each. When sitting at the tables, the students faced each other. On each table was a container with markers, pencils, blank paper, pens, and a dictionary. The class was furnished with two reference computers, one computer on Ms. Yeary's desk, document camera, one projector and screen and a small classroom library. There were three windows on the right side of the classroom, providing additional light and a view of the playground. Before entering the classroom, each student was greeted by Ms. Yeary with a handshake. When the students entered, the classroom became filled with laughter ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During independent practice, I was walking around the classroom and examining student work and assisting students by answering their questions about the math problems. Mathematical practices observed  Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them The students were given problems following group instruction and were dismissed to independent practice. During both my visits the students were finding strategies that would help them with the problem. This is the point at which I saw frustration among students as they persevered with the problems.  Reason abstractly and quantitatively I observed students conceptualizing ... How many nickels do I have?"  Look for and make use of structure A few students made connections about patterns when they were skip counting and could understand that their number stings of fives or tens are repeated addition. They made flash cards out of long strips of paper for twos, fives and tens. Mathematical practices that could have been included.  Use appropriate tools strategically Given the difficulty a handful of the students were having with their independent practice problems, this would have been an appropriate opportunity to bring out manipulatives such as Unifix Cubes or base ten blocks. Even though every student was using a paper 100's chart this was still confusing for some. What was interesting. What is interesting is the fact that a few of these students are struggling with number sense halfway through second grade. I was surprised that they were not further along in their studies, but I am probably making unfair comparisons in relation to where my son was at the same age. It made it much clearer for me the kinds of struggles I will face as a classroom teacher with students of wide and varying abilities. What I agreed or disagreed with. Ms. Davenport calls the students back to the rug after independent practice for a group discussion about the problems and

  • 77. The Importance Of Early Reading Strategies In Education Rationale While primary grade, general classroom, teachers are keenly aware of the importance of early literacy instruction, with increasing class sizes and diverse populations of students in our classrooms, teachers find it difficult to recognize which strategies are most effective for instruction especially for struggling readers. What's more, teachers may not fully comprehend the implications of students struggling at such an early stage of literacy acquisition and may assume at some point students will "catch up" with peers. However, as research indicates, "...there is evidence that children's early reading skills in preschool and early elementary school are related to reading skills and achievement later in elementary, middle and high school." (Cunningham & Stanovich, 1997; Storch & Whitehurst, 2002, as cited in Baroody & Diamond, 2016). Therefore, it is imperative educators intervene as early as possible with effective literacy instruction strategies to engage, motivate and support developing readers. The research presented below provides insight into evidence–based approaches including, among others, grouping strategies, individualized instruction, and technology support along with other intervention strategies for effective, early literacy instruction for struggling learners. Additionally, the studies support the idea of establishing systematic, differentiated, engaging and positive reading experiences which will provide a solid foundation designed for reading ... Advantages And Disadvantages Of ICT In ESL Classrooms The goal of this research was to discover the barriers that discourage the ESL teachers from using ICT in Sri Lanka and to assess teachers' and students' attitudes towards ICT implementation in the classroom. The proposed methodology of this study is a mixed method of qualitative and quantitative research design. This study was conducted within five different ESL schools in Colombo district which is located in the Western Province of Sri Lanka. There is a need of a study which aims to measure the extent to which technology integration in educational system in Sri Lanka has been successful. So that this research paper commenced by probing ESL teachers' views on technology integration in classrooms. The results of the current study indicated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Figure 2) This module consists of the barriers that affect technology adoption. This model will be further developed in order to remove the barriers of technology integration and provide support to integrate technology into ESL curriculum. Therefore this model will be suitable for integrating technology in Sri Lankan ESL context. Implementing the above proposed model will require few steps. The first step is to identify the necessary plans to provide computers to schools. Second step is Sri Lankan policy makers need to be aware of providing necessary training for teachers to be familiar with classroom technology. Not only computer education, but also teachers' pedagogical training is important to motivate the teachers to incorporate technology into pedagogy. A future study would be important to consider the impact each of the above factors has on educational planning. Future researchers must also examine these particular barriers. Further research would be needed to determine whether the perceived changes can be quantified to increase student engagement and understanding. Future research may want to explore teachers' access to, not only the technology, but also to opportunities for professional development focused on integrating technology into ...
