1. Target Audience
My target audience for my indie magazine is the demographic groups ABC1. This way I can create a magazine that appeals to lots of
different people. The price of the magazine will be ÂŁ4.99 as I feel that itâs a reasonable price that all groups could afford.
Because I have chosen the genre indie for my magazine, my primary target audience will be individualists, both males and females that are
interested in indie music. They also like to be independent, original, have their own style and do not follow âmainstreamâ trends.
My target audience like to spend their free time on Tumblr and Instagram, uploading pictures or weird/original things. Their poses are very
subtle which has inspired me of the type of pictures Iâm going to take. They also like to play guitar, listen to indie bands and generally arenât
very busy people. I would guess they live a very relaxed life. On weekends, I imagine they like going to gigs with their friends. Indie people
like to discover new upcoming bands and make them popular, they sometimes believe themselves to be âtrend settersâ.
The age range of my primary target audience is 14-24. I chose this as I would prefer to make a magazine that is aimed at a relatively
younger audience. This way, I can relate to my magazine more and I can design it in a way that I like, rather than creating a magazine that I
donât like or which doesnât appeal to me. I assume that my target audience will use Tumblr and Instagram the most as they like to take, edit
and upload pictures. This is something that will help me decide on the ways to interact with the reader throughout my magazine.
Reception Theory:
Reception theory is the idea that the every person reading the magazine will interpret it in different ways. The reception theory suggests that text is
not passively accepted by the audience, meaning that they do not show the any emotions. This is because the way the reader will interpret the
magazine will depend on their influences. For example; their background, previous experiences and culture.
Overall, the idea is that the meaning of the text is not in the text itself, but is created between the text and the reader. In my magazine, I aim to
follow the codes and conventions that appeal and apply to people that enjoy indie music. When I make my magazine I will keep in mind the reception
theory so that I can make my magazine appeal to a wide range of audiences, no matter what their background or culture, instead of just my target
audience.
2. The genre I have chosen for my magazine is indie. Indie magazines and the people that follow indie music have the conventions of independence and
originality. They like to be their own person and they do not like to follow âmainstream crowdsâ. I feel like an indie magazine would be the most fun to
make as I can make it âdifferentâ so that it fits the indie theme which is more interesting. Also, as I do not typically listen to indie music I can learn more
about it first hand whilst I make the magazine and research into the indie genre.
Collectively, the pictures I have chosen on my mood board will help me decide on the overall theme and look of my magazine. I think the patterns and
colours will help me decide on the look of all the pages and to decide on the final colour scheme of my magazine fonts. The other pictures on my mood
board relate to indie themed things and hobbies of an indie person. These pictures will inspire me to think of ways I can interest my target audience
more. On my mood board, I included pictures of the fashion of indie people as this would give me an idea of the types of clothes I want the artists to
wear. All of the clothes are very laid back, âflowyâ and patterned. There is also a picture of a middle class house, which best relates to the indie audience,
this can also help me with ideas for the settings of the pictures. Also I chose photos of the indie bands and previous indie magazines so I can see their
poses and the style of pictures that are used on the front cover to choose similar ones to go on my magazine so that it fits the indie theme.
On the front over of my magazine I need to include a masthead, a main cover image and a sell lines. The masthead needs to be bold and the biggest
thing on the page that is easy to read. I want the masthead to be seen so my cover photo and other pictures I use will need to be placed around or
behind the masthead. The sell lines will be there to draw in the customers, so they need to be short and give them an idea of what the magazine will
include. The artist will be represented as an independent artist. I will do this by having them in a dark setting with a spotlight on them, holding an
instrument and having them wearing clothes that would be typically be seen on an indie person.
My ideal publisher would be NME (New Musical Express) as it is a popular music publisher who have published popular magazines. If I use a popular
publisher it may also help the amount of customers who buy the magazine as they would recognize the publisher and may want to try a different genre of
magazine.
