The masthead denotes the
title ‘Riddim’ which connotes
‘rhythmic patterns’ which
relates to music having
‘rhythm’ and a beat.
Price
£2.99 – this is cheaper
than my magazine of

compete with it and
hopefully my magazine

The magazine will be presented with bright and bold colours in order to catch the audiences attention. The
font that I will be using is going to stand out so therefore people are more likely to want to buy my magazine. I
will produce the magazine pages with Adobe Photoshop and Indesign to ensure they are of a good quality and
a consistent layout. The magic wand tool in Photoshop will be very beneficial in order to edit the picture from
the background I order for the front cover and the DPS to look professional. The colours Grey and yellow relate
to my magazine of inspiration ‘Vibe’ and the colours are different compared to other magazines.
Masthead: The use of
the masthead ‘Vibe’
stands out to the
reader and therefore
be the first thing the
reader sees when
they first look at the
magazine. The use of
the yellow font is
bright and bld.
Banner: The use of the
banner draws their
attention to one of
the main focuses of
the magazine which is
about the race issue
Cover lines: The use of
cover lines highlights
to the reader about
the key points of the
magazine so therefore
its easier for them to
decide whether they
want to read it or not.
Barcode: The use
of the barcode
tells the reader
the price and

information
about the
magazine.

I have chosen these specific fonts because there are simplistic but stand out. The bold used on the fonts allows
to catch the readers eye and therefore encourage them to want to buy the magazine. I have also chosen these
fonts because they are different to most fonts so therefore it makes them unique and allows them to look
different from competitor magazines.

Production plan (Week 4)
The target audience that Vibe magazine aims their
magazine is C1, C2 and D. Firstly its evident that
they aim their magazine at C1 because they use
some complex language in some of the articles in
the magazine that only highly educated people
would be able to understand. Its also evident that
the magazine is aimed at C2 and D because the
artists in the magazine wear lots of flashy jewellery
and have lots of tattoos which is normally
associated with people of a lower class.
Socio economic needs
Katz’ Uses & Gratifications theory:
Inform and educate- According to Katz, Vibe magazine will inform and educate the audience about R&B music highlighting information about
interviews with R&B artists, music reviews and contains information about interviews which have taken place between Riddim magazine and
different R&B artists. It also Informs and educates the audience by providing them with up to date news about R&B music and the artists
featured in the magazine lives.
Diversion- According to Katz, Riddim magazine will divert the reader into a world of R&B and the reader won’t lose interest throughout
reading the magazine. Vibe contains interviews, reviews, pictures, editorials that can help the reader escape from reality.
Personal Identification- According to Katz, Riddim magazine will allow the reader to see the point of view of the R&B artists so therefore they
are able to relate to them. They can also identify with the artist through what they speak about in the interview if its personal information.
Personal Relationship- According to Katz, Riddim magazine will interact with the reader and make them feel a part of the magazine. They can
build a relationship with the artist inside of the magazine and they can also build a relationship with the editor when they build the editorial.
Katz Theory
Hartley’s Subjectivities
Age: The age that RIddim magazine is aimed for is 15-30 years old, I think this because of the content in the
magazine and the genre of the music is usually associated with younger people. Also the news in the magazine
will be more relatable for people of a younger age because its based on the artists which they like and have had a
interest in while growing up.
Gender: The gender that Riddim magazine is aimed for is men, this is evident from a majority of the artists that
are featured on the magazine being male artists. This also means that most of the articles in the magazine will
also be based on male artists so therefore males will be able to relate to the magazine more than someone of the
female gender.
Class: The class of the magazine is middle class, this is due to the type of music and the artists that are in the
magazine. I also believe that the magazine is aimed at middle class due to the price of the magazine being
extremely similar to other magazines and therefore not being overpriced so therefore everyone is able to afford
it.
Ethnicity: The magazine appeals to all different ethnicities so therefore it has a larger target audience.
Maslow Theory
Social Climbers: The audience will be known as social climbers for example if the celebrity on the front cover is
wearing expensive designer clothing the audience will like this. Reading this magazine the audience will want
to be build their status in society and as it is a well known popular magazine the audience can therefore do this
by reading it.
Caregivers: The audience will be known as caregivers for example if there is an interview in the magazine that
is emotional they will sympathize with the celebrity and their situation.
Survivors: The audience will be known as survivors because they will like the routine of the magazine of the
magazine being produced monthly furthermore they will also like the fact that you can subscribe to the
magazine meaning they will get a magazine every month without fail. They like the routine that they will be
kept up to date on R&B news.
Marketing the magazine
I am going to advertise my magazine through social media because it’s the cheapest and most effective way of advertising. I am also going to
advertise through social media because it allows my advert to be seen by a majority of different people so therefore this means that I will be
increasing the amount of potential customers for my magazine.
Connotations behind magazine name
The reasons behind the title “Riddim’ is that it relates to music so therefore are relevant to a music magazine.
The word Riddim also relates to rthymic patterns which are handed through each generation. Riddim also is a
commonly used word which is from Jamaica. Therefore this is relevant to my magazine because a majority of
the artists which are featuring in my magazine are from Jamaica so its likely that a lot of the readers are going
to know exactly what the title is and exactly what it means.

good amount of bass on a song defines it.

Riddim Magazine Targets Hip-Hop Fans

  • 1. Welcome to my presentation By Zack Simpson
  • 4. DPS
  • 7. Magazine ideas RIDDIM Masthead Colour scheme Types of images Frequency Brand Identity Target Audience The front cover will be a medium close up. Mid shots and close ups will be in the DPS. Images of R&B artists Monthly magazine which is similar to my magazine of inspiration ‘VIBE’. The reason for this is because I want a big build up towards the next issue and the magazine will be able to contain more up to date music information if it is monthly. 3 main colours on the front cover on the magazine Social media – Convergence/Syn ergy Website Aged 15-30 (Hartley) because the Hip-Hop genre mainly appeals to this age group. They will be able to recognise all the artists in that genre. Grey and yellow Black and yellow The masthead denotes the title ‘Riddim’ which connotes ‘rhythmic patterns’ which relates to music having ‘rhythm’ and a beat. Price £2.99 – this is cheaper than my magazine of inspiration so I can compete with it and hopefully my magazine will sell more copies. Mind-map

  • 12. House Style and Colour Scheme The magazine will be presented with bright and bold colours in order to catch the audiences attention. The font that I will be using is going to stand out so therefore people are more likely to want to buy my magazine. I will produce the magazine pages with Adobe Photoshop and Indesign to ensure they are of a good quality and a consistent layout. The magic wand tool in Photoshop will be very beneficial in order to edit the picture from the background I order for the front cover and the DPS to look professional. The colours Grey and yellow relate to my magazine of inspiration ‘Vibe’ and the colours are different compared to other magazines.
  • 13. Masthead: The use of the masthead ‘Vibe’ stands out to the reader and therefore be the first thing the reader sees when they first look at the magazine. The use of the yellow font is bright and bld. Banner: The use of the banner draws their attention to one of the main focuses of the magazine which is about the race issue Cover lines: The use of cover lines highlights to the reader about the key points of the magazine so therefore its easier for them to decide whether they want to read it or not. Barcode: The use of the barcode tells the reader the price and basic information about the magazine. Main picture: The use of the main picture for the magazine is very bold and the use of the black and white effect also makes it stand out. Analysis of Magazine of inspiration
  • 16. Acceleration and reaction Flowers Kingdom Asiyah Script I have chosen these specific fonts because there are simplistic but stand out. The bold used on the fonts allows to catch the readers eye and therefore encourage them to want to buy the magazine. I have also chosen these fonts because they are different to most fonts so therefore it makes them unique and allows them to look different from competitor magazines. Font Styles

  • 21. The target audience that Vibe magazine aims their magazine is C1, C2 and D. Firstly its evident that they aim their magazine at C1 because they use some complex language in some of the articles in the magazine that only highly educated people would be able to understand. Its also evident that the magazine is aimed at C2 and D because the artists in the magazine wear lots of flashy jewellery and have lots of tattoos which is normally associated with people of a lower class. Socio economic needs
  • 22. Katz’ Uses & Gratifications theory: Inform and educate- According to Katz, Vibe magazine will inform and educate the audience about R&B music highlighting information about interviews with R&B artists, music reviews and contains information about interviews which have taken place between Riddim magazine and different R&B artists. It also Informs and educates the audience by providing them with up to date news about R&B music and the artists featured in the magazine lives. Diversion- According to Katz, Riddim magazine will divert the reader into a world of R&B and the reader won’t lose interest throughout reading the magazine. Vibe contains interviews, reviews, pictures, editorials that can help the reader escape from reality. Personal Identification- According to Katz, Riddim magazine will allow the reader to see the point of view of the R&B artists so therefore they are able to relate to them. They can also identify with the artist through what they speak about in the interview if its personal information. Personal Relationship- According to Katz, Riddim magazine will interact with the reader and make them feel a part of the magazine. They can build a relationship with the artist inside of the magazine and they can also build a relationship with the editor when they build the editorial. Katz Theory
  • 23. Hartley’s Subjectivities Age: The age that RIddim magazine is aimed for is 15-30 years old, I think this because of the content in the magazine and the genre of the music is usually associated with younger people. Also the news in the magazine will be more relatable for people of a younger age because its based on the artists which they like and have had a interest in while growing up. Gender: The gender that Riddim magazine is aimed for is men, this is evident from a majority of the artists that are featured on the magazine being male artists. This also means that most of the articles in the magazine will also be based on male artists so therefore males will be able to relate to the magazine more than someone of the female gender. Class: The class of the magazine is middle class, this is due to the type of music and the artists that are in the magazine. I also believe that the magazine is aimed at middle class due to the price of the magazine being extremely similar to other magazines and therefore not being overpriced so therefore everyone is able to afford it. Ethnicity: The magazine appeals to all different ethnicities so therefore it has a larger target audience.
  • 24. Maslow Theory Social Climbers: The audience will be known as social climbers for example if the celebrity on the front cover is wearing expensive designer clothing the audience will like this. Reading this magazine the audience will want to be build their status in society and as it is a well known popular magazine the audience can therefore do this by reading it. Caregivers: The audience will be known as caregivers for example if there is an interview in the magazine that is emotional they will sympathize with the celebrity and their situation. Survivors: The audience will be known as survivors because they will like the routine of the magazine of the magazine being produced monthly furthermore they will also like the fact that you can subscribe to the magazine meaning they will get a magazine every month without fail. They like the routine that they will be kept up to date on R&B news.
  • 25. Marketing the magazine I am going to advertise my magazine through social media because it’s the cheapest and most effective way of advertising. I am also going to advertise through social media because it allows my advert to be seen by a majority of different people so therefore this means that I will be increasing the amount of potential customers for my magazine.
  • 26. Connotations behind magazine name The reasons behind the title “Riddim’ is that it relates to music so therefore are relevant to a music magazine. The word Riddim also relates to rthymic patterns which are handed through each generation. Riddim also is a commonly used word which is from Jamaica. Therefore this is relevant to my magazine because a majority of the artists which are featuring in my magazine are from Jamaica so its likely that a lot of the readers are going to know exactly what the title is and exactly what it means.

  • 48. Katz’ Uses & Gratifications theory: Inform and educate- According to Katz, Vibe magazine will inform and educate the audience about R&B music highlighting information about interviews with R&B artists, music reviews and contains information about interviews which have taken place between Bass magazine and different R&B artists. It also Informs and educates the audience by providing them with up to date news about R&B music and the artists featured in the magazine lives. Diversion- According to Katz, Bass magazine will divert the reader into a world of R&B and the reader won’t lose interest throughout reading the magazine. Vibe contains interviews, reviews, pictures, editorials that can help the reader escape from reality. Personal Identification- According to Katz, Bass magazine will allow the reader to see the point of view of the R&B artists so therefore they are able to relate to them. They can also identify with the artist through what they speak about in the interview if its personal information. • 50. Hartley’s Subjectivities Age: The age that Bass magazine is aimed for is 15-30 years old, I think this because of the content in the magazine and the genre of the music is usually associated with younger people. Also the news in the magazine will be more relatable for people of a younger age because its based on the artists which they like and have had a interest in while growing up. Gender: The gender that Bass magazine is aimed for is men, this is evident from a majority of the artists that are featured on the magazine being male artists.
  • 52. Marketing the magazine I am going to advertise my magazine through social media because it’s the cheapest and most effective way of advertising. I am also going to advertise through social media because it allows my advert to be seen by a majority of different people so therefore this means that I will be increasing the amount of potential customers for my magazine.
  • 53. Connotations behind magazine name The reasons behind the title ‘Bass’ is that it relates to music so therefore are relevant to a music magazine. Bass is something, which is low in pitch usually found in a song. Bass has always been associated with music and is one of the first words in which is thought upon when thinking about music. In my opinion the bass of a song is one of the most important parts and I feel that the good amount of bass on a song defines it.

Editor's Notes

  1. More information needed – You must either talk about both magazines on one mind-map and make it clear to the examiner or create 2 different mind-maps Frequency – why? Colours – why?
  2. You need to go into deeper analysis like you have don’t for other front covers and DPS.
  3. You need a slide on moodboard conclusions – pick 2 images from EACH moodboard and write why you chose them.
