1. 1. H.D. magazine Course-work Evaluation Jordan J.G. Watkins
 2. 2. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products.

I started to look at hip hop magazines after typing ‘‘Hip Hop magazine’’ into Google images and a number of magazines came up, the ones that took my eye the most was ‘‘VIBE MAGAZINE, XXL MAGAZINE, THE SOURCE MAGAZINE’’.

I have chose my main image to be a young black male for the reason that in the world of Hip-Hop most iconic rappers are black males with the exception of Eminem and Asher Roth. People, audiences and potential buyers of the magazine associate Hip-Hop with black people so the clear choice was to have a black Hip-Hop artist.

The clothing that I had the main image wearing was a dark hat with a golden star on it to represent the artist as a shining star which contrasts with the background which is a plain black and white on both sides of the page so the hat with the star on is symbolic showing that the music artist stands out from plain black and white. I had made the artist wear the hat over most of his face to arouse audiences interest and make them think ‘‘who is this person on the front of the magazine?’’ if they don’t already know who the artist is which then would make them ‘‘Ni Sheng’s attitude and dress style is fresh and cool’’. I basically wanted the main picture to interest and entice people that look at the front cover which is what draws people in to the magazine if they have never heard about the magazine before. I had the artist wear all black with hits of colour to show the artists style which is Hip-Hop/grime style which is known to be quite dark but with the flashes of colour like gold, red and white shows that there is more to him then that.

The layout of my page

The conventions I used from professional music magazines (At the bottom of the page) was conventions props, Image size and position, colour scheme and text positioning.

Props – The only prop I used on my magazine front cover was a baseball cap because it was similar to the other props that the professional magazines used.

I tried to develop the background of my magazine pages on further from what I had seen in the professional magazines by making the contrast between colours more sharp and to make it add more of an effect to the main images and also compliment the colour of the text.

(VIBE MAGAZINE) (MY HD MAGAZINE) (THE SOURCE MAGAZINE) (XXL MAGAZINE) (Front Cover)
 3. 3.

My content pages main images is of two

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products.

(Content Page)
 4. 4. Double spread page In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products.
 5. 5. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I think my product represents its hip-hop generation social group by having the artist that is featured in the magazine has the same dress style of social group, people can relate to people that have the same dress style as themselves.

The magazine uses the same language as the hip hop culture, so the readers can relate with the language that is used in hip hop culture.

The use of artists that are featured in my magazine are the type of artists that hip-hop idolizes so readers are interested to see what is going on with the artists.

My magazine includes real stories that happen in the world of hip-hop to young people, the young people that read this will be able to relate which will continue to interest the readers of the magazines.

 6. 6. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

After research I found an institution who publishes magazines, this institution is called Harris publications. Harris publications is a consumer magazine publisher located in New York that publishes over 75 titles such as ‘‘XXL Magazine, King Magazine Juicy magazine and Rides Magazine.’’ These are just some of the magazines that they publish but these in particular are involved in hip-hop culture and music. As I have based my magazine on magazine such as ‘‘XXL and The Source magazine’’ who have involvement in Harris Productions then it would only make sense that my magazine would be next in being published by the company. Hopefully following the success of XXL magazine, Vibe magazine or the source magazine. Harris institutions seem to be the most appropriate choice to pitch my magazine too.

 7. 7. Who would be the audience for your media product?

My audience are lovers of Hip-Hop and people who are interested in the growth of Hip-Hop in the UK, I think the audience will be late teens through to late 20’s or early 30’s. with the information of new music artists, information on there favourite music artists, new songs that are coming out, new fashions and styles of the music world, even new music products like microphones, earphones, speakers, new videogames.

With all the features my magazine would contain and having new information with each issue that comes out every month

 8. 8. How did you attract/address your audience?

My audience will be attracted with all of the features my magazine has, with the information of new music artists, information on there favourite music artists, new songs that are coming out, new fashions and styles of the music world, even new music products like microphones, earphones, speakers, new videogames.

With all the features my magazine would contain and having new information with each issue that comes out every month it will keep my audience to keep going out and buying the next issue of ‘‘HD magazine’’

Language that I have used in my magazine is the same kind of language that my audience knows and is familiar with, they can relate with the phrases and quotes that are in the magazine.

The music genre that my magazine includes would actually be the same kind of music that the audiences listens too, so the audience would be interested in the magazine so that they could see what new is going on in the ‘‘Hip-Hop or grime scene.’’

My main image is of a teenager looking stylish and cool, seen as the magazine is for teenagers and young adults so it only makes sense to put a young person on the front cover and throughout the magazine, well basically all through the magazine, most of the magazine is about the young musician. The image itself will create interest with potential buyers even if the buyers of the magazine does not know the musician the front cover creates interest.

 9. 9. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

The main technology that I used during the production of my magazine was Photoshop elements. This technology had tools such as ‘‘magnetic lasso tool, the magic eraser, layer masking and erasing, layer merging, layer duplication, text and colour’’. With all of these I was able to imitate the professional magazines and make my magazine look as professional as theirs. With cropping images, text placement, colour editing and being able to easily erase any mistakes, I was able to make my magazine look as good as it possibly could.

 10. 10.

Another technology I used was a camera. I used cameras to take every picture that is in my magazine. With the different setting I was able to use the same effects that professional magazines use to make my images look better.

 11. 11. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Now looking back to my preliminary task I think I have learnt how to stick with a colour scheme and not use too many colours.

I have stopped complicating designs and by keeping backgrounds, texts and images simple the product looks more professional and effective.

I have learnt how to space images and text to make it look more professional.

Overall my progression has been big, looking at my preliminary front cover and my final front cover you can see the massive difference.

My overall skills have improved in using Photoshop and my positioning of pictures and text after all my research on existing hip hop music magazine.

Progression
