'How birds learn to fly' is a coming of age movie that takes places within school. To show that
the movie opening takes place inside a school classroom, I have decided to add props that are
easily found within the school environment.
The stack of files will be used in the very first scene of the movie by Miss Jean, one of the main
characters in the movie. The slamming of the files on the table will create a large sound,
capturing the attention of the audience. There will be no extreme close ups on the stack of files,
leaving the written information on the files to remain a mystery. However, this enigma will be
broken with Miss Jean mentioning about university applications and Harper's grades, giving
context to the scenario.
The pen, pencil case, notebook and backpack will all be used to signify Harper, the
protagonist's status within the movie. The environment of the school, Harper's belongings and
uniform all draw into the conclusion that Harper is a student. The use of props surrounding
Harper are meant to help the audience identify the key features of the protagonist. Props such
as these are all commonly used in school centred movies, such as 'Perks of being a wallflower',
'Clueless' and 'The breakfast club'.
2. The clock is an item that takes great part in this movie's opening sequence. The clock directly
links with the message written on Harper's hand(5 O'clock don't forget) and also gives a hint on
how time will play an important part within the plot of the movie.
