Purpose
The purpose for this research is
that we can analyse all of the
conventions of film posters.
This will allow us to produce a
high quality movie poster, for
our upcoming blockbuster
‘Pengyuelan’, which will either
follow or challenge typical
conventions.
Featured Movie
Posters
1. Annabelle
2. The Boy
3. Finders Keepers
Conventions
There are many conventions that apply to movie posters. This normally
consists of:
• A main image - The main image usually has a main character, object,
place or symbol with a meaning, that is deeply involved with the plot.
• Title – This is vital for the poster of the film. It is usually bold, easy to
read, font which stands
• Tagline – This is often something that will appearing within the movie
trailer as well as the poster. It often gives a hint at what the film will
consist of.
Annabelle Main Image
The Main Image for this
poster is the doll called
Annabelle. From this the
audience can expect to this
doll to be featured heavily
thoughout the plot. The doll
itself appears to be old and
worn, this allows a ‘Creepy’
appearance. Therefore
allowing the audience to
understand the genre of the
movie is Horror.
The Colours
The colours of the Main Image and text are, Black,
White and Red. The colour Black often represents
darkness, evil and impurity. Where as the colour White
is associated with innocents and purity. This can show
the audience that the plot is based off, what was once,
an innocent and pure character which has now become
evil and dark. This also show that the doll may be
possessed as these coliurs are on and around the doll
within the main image.
Title
Big Bold letters in the bottom quarter.Tagline
Before The Conjuring there was Annabelle. -
Links two films/stories together which also
allows the audience to know the genre is horror.
The Boy
The Tagline for this poster is located
within the top third of the image. It states
‘Every Child Needs To Be Loved’. This may
lead the audience to be enticed by the
movie as this would make them feel
uncomfortable as there is not actually a
child in the movie.
The main image is very basic. The audience
are unable to the character in the poster
clearly. This will generate further interest in
the movie as it will give the audience a
chance to find out more. The colour pallet
that is used is also effective, through the use
of using predominantly primary colours the
audience are able to connect with the ‘boy’
as use of primary colours is often associated
with younger people and children.
The title is located in the bottom
third of the poster. The word ‘The’ is
in harsh and some-what
sophisticated typeface, whereas the
word ‘Boy’ looks are though it has
been written or scratched into an
object by a child. This is an example
of an oxymoron. Which will further
entice the potential audience.
Finders Keepers
The tagline is located in the top right hand corner
of the poster which is interesting as this also
challenges the typical conventions of film posters.
The main Image that is used shows a young girl in the
background of the shot and a old damaged doll, holding a
weapon, in the foreground. This suggests that the young girl is
going to be in the shadow of the doll throughout the movie or
there us to be some sort of connection between the two. This will
generate interest for the audience members.
The title of this film is located in the lower quarter of the poster, the
typeface is in all capitals and is bright red, a colour that often represents
death, fear, blood and danger. The use of all capitals is interesting as it
offers a certain level of urgency and danger to the poster. This allows the
potential audience to understand the genre of the film.
There are only two credit on this
poster which challenges the
typical conventions of film
posters as the credits are often
covering all of the well know cast
and crew members involved with
the production of the movie.
Analysis
When conducting my research I have come to the conclusion that #, for our film poster, we
would benefit from using our doll in the main image of our poster. However, we also want it to
feature the two main characters as well. This is inspiration from the poster of Finders Keepers.
We will also be putting out title in the bottom third of the poster. This is due to it being a
constant trend in all of the posters we have seen so far.
